Caritas [Sunday Evening]

Greg opened up Caritas, mulling over the conversation from earlier in the day with his school-appointed and very grumpy little brother.

He whistled as he started to reassemble the band, and then took his place behind the bar and waving cheerfully to Jarod on the other side of the bar.

"Yeah, well there are other rebel angels who could take his place."

"I suppose so," El said. He popped the top off his soda. "So, an important question for you, Reverend Custer. A very important question from a man who has followed the path of bringing people to count for a long time."

He took a drink from his soda.

"After your done, what then?"

Jesse'd given that no small amount of thought while he was in Salvation.

"I'm gonna get Tulip back and we're going to ride off into the sunset."

El started laughing. Which slowly died down. "Oh God. I remember when I thought that was going to be it. Assuming that I'm right in thinking that Tulip es tu senorita."

Jesse's shook his head. "I'll love her 'til the end of the world, but I think the end of the world for me's gonna come at the end of this quest."

"Hope that it does, then," El said. "Because take it from someone who knows. Riding off into the sunset with the woman you love doesn't insure that you'll have a happy ending."

"Nothing does," Jesse said, signalling for another shot. "Nothing does."

El nodded. "In that case, amigo mio, my only advice, is to remember the following things."

He held up a finger. "One. Cherish what time you have with those that you love."

He held up another finger. "Two. Ask yourself this question every day when you wake up in the morning. 'Is what I'm doing worth losing everything for'?"

"I think making God answer for the fucking mess he's let his creation become is worth it. Someone has to do it."

El shrugged. "A better reason than the one I had," he said, simply.

Jesse looked over at El and realized something. "Jesse Custer," he said, sticking out his hand. "You should know my name before I ask you what your reasons were."

El shook his hand. "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Custer." He shrugged. "They killed her. Or, to be more accurate, he killed her. And I killed him. But not before he shot my hand."

He held up his left hand to reveal the awkward brace. "I wanted revenge on the whole race of them. And that's what lead me down that road."

Jesse remembered watching Tulip die and the black feeling in his soul while he killed everyone he could, including, or especially, Jodie.

And farther down that same path lay the Saint of Killers.

"Are you still travelling it?"

"No. These days I have no path to travel," El responded.

Jesse smiled. "Time to warp young minds, my friend. There's no higher calling."

El shrugged. "I suppose. Are you teaching up at the school as well?"

"I believe I am. I think there's something here I need, but I don't know what yet."

El smiled. "I know the feeling. What will you be teaching?"

Jesse matched El's smile with a grin. "World Religions."

"I still don't know what I'm teaching yet. I got in only an hour ago."

"I didn't know I'd be teaching until a few hours ago, but I'm sure I can have a Word with the staff up there and get them to see my way."

"Certain... associates of mine have already spoken with the administration," El responded. "Apparently the CIA can be very persuasive, even in the area of private schooling."
