Cafe Fina, Friday

Alfred had tracked down all the chefs and forced them to come to work today.

You'd think an elderly British butler couldn't be scary. Normally, you'd be right. But when said elderly British butler is ex-British Intelligence, the equation changes slightly.

Okay, the equation changes a lot.

Regardless, Alfred was supervising Wadsworth putting up a big banner welcoming all the Parents and proclaiming a discount for all parents with their family. Or psuedo family, as the case may be.

He was quite looking forward to meeting Arthur Hellsing.

Cafe Fina was open.

Parker sat down with the air of someone hoping desperately that everything would go well, and prepared to kill anyone in the vicinity if it didn't. "I've only been here a couple times, but the food is usually excellent, Daddy. I can't speak for the wine, though."

"I'll take a dry Stoli martini, two onions," Mr. Parker decided. "Angel? What would you like?"

"Oh, just a glass of chardonnay for me, thanks," Parker said, settling into her seat. "I hope Sydney gets here soon. I'd hate to leave him dangling."

"We are expecting one more, but leave the menus now and we'll order when we're ready."

Re: Dinner

Mr. Parker stopped himself from saying the first thing that came to mind--it was hardly civil. "Well, then, it might take us a bit longer to decide, hey, Angel?"

He winked at her.

"Sorry I'm late." Sydney stood at the table. "Hello, Parker. Good evening, Mr. Parker. May I join you?"

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] progenitor-park.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course, Sydney," Mr. Parker said expansively, hiding his irritation at the other man's presence. Sydney was really quite a busybody when he wanted to be. "And how are things in the lab? Keeping you busy?"

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] centre-sydney.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sydney shot a look at Parker as he seated himself. "Yes. I've been working on some theories of cognative behavioral conditioning. It's been quite... absorbing."

Re: Dinner

Parker smiled and rolled her eyes a little, but Sydney could probably pick up on her anxiety, smoothing her napkin, rearranging her forks. "It's good to see you, Sydney. Thanks for coming. No shop talk while you're here, though. This is supposed to be fun."

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] centre-sydney.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sydney began to answer Parker, then turned to see who had addressed him. "Gin and tonic," he said to Alfred. "Thank you."

He turned back to Parker. "No, I won't talk shop. This is the weekend that we are supposed to be examining your work, correct? So what are your teachers going to tell us about your performance?"

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Excellent, as usual," Parker said, smirking very slightly, and tilting her head with as much Parker arrogance as possible. "International Relations is a great course. So is Astronomy; I'm working on an extra credit project there. Music-- well. It's too bad neither of you will be here next week, for our recital. I've got a song."

If any of this was *slightly* bragging, it was only by a slim margin.

[identity profile] progenitor-park.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"A song?" He might have sounded a bit scornful. "Isn't that a waste of your time?"

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Parker controlled the instinct to wince, and squeezed a fork between her fingers. "Music class is simply to show I'm well-rounded on the transcripts, Daddy. You know college recruiters want to believe that every applicant is a Renaissance Man. Or woman." And never mind that she'd needed the break, and really liked Lorne. Those would never be adequate reasons.

[identity profile] centre-sydney.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"What is your extra credit project in Astronomy? Finding the source of the universe?"

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
And Parker relaxed again, and stopped fiddling with the silverware. "Actually, it's a survey of different planetary environments, and the kinds of lifeforms that would evolve there. Not exactly my field, but I'm sharing the work with another student, so we should be able to turn in a report that'll impress two sets of teachers. We'll probably enter it in the Science Fair, just for the exhibits, since it's not an experiment."

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] centre-sydney.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
When no reply was forthcoming, Sydney leaned forward. "I would have thought you would do an experiment. You've always favored the practical over the theoretical."

Re: Dinner

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-10-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Parker gave him a nervous smile, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "We considered it, but neither I nor Marie want to do an experiment that's likely to get shown up by the true science geeks. So we're working on practical applications that can't be disproven yet." She took a sip of her water, and cut her father a glance. "I was thinking of it as an exercise in R&D, really."
