The Perk, Tuesday

While Wilson was spending his day sleeping in his office and conducting class, Aziraphale decided to get out of the apartment for a bit. Taking his Daily Telegraph along with him, he headed down to the Perk for a cup of apple spice tea and a scone. Finding himself a quiet table, he settled in to work his crossword.

"Possibly worrisome, yes," the Doctor said. "Calm before the storm, and all that. But personally, I think the storms are worth the calms."

Aziraphale pondered the thought for a moment, nodding. "They do serve to pull everyone together, don't they? Help us all find our common ground. Yes, I do suppose that in retrospect, the 'storms' as you call them haven't been too awful. And...well, I hate to admit it but...in some ways, even enjoyable."

"Bit of danger is good for the circulation," the Doctor said, smiling.

"Keeps one sharp as well, I suppose," Aziraphale agreed, chuckling. "So as long as it isn't personal, I suppose it's nice now and again. Providing I get to go back to my books when it's over. Of course, to be honest, there's a great deal more in the way of danger here than where I come from. At least, danger that isn't of the entirely mortal human variety. I expect this is the sort of place that attracts it, though. You've likely dealt with a great deal more of that sort of thing than I have."

"Well, being around for as long as I have, you do run into a bit more trouble than your average fellow," the Doctor said. "My experiences span a large amount of emergencies, though, yes."

"I suppose Fandom must seem like a bit of holiday for you at times," Aziraphale mused. "Have you done any traveling since coming here? I mean, you know..." He waved his hand in the vague direction of, something. "Time traveling. Seen anything interesting?"

"Well, that was my original intention, coming here. A bit of a holiday," the Doctor said. "As for travel, well, not in time. I helped thwart an alien invasion of Washington DC, though."

"Really? Why..." Aziraphale leaned forward and looked very curious. "Perhaps you can clear up something for me that I've been wondering about. Why exactly do aliens want to invade places? I mean...places like Washington, DC, or London, or such? I've never really understood that."

"Same reasons why countries on Earth invade other countries. Greed. Hate. Just because they can," the Doctor said. "All of those ridiculously stupid reasons."

"Hm." Aziraphale looked a little disappointed, but he nodded. "I still have a little difficulty, I think, not applying the word 'alien' to mean beings that are very fundamentally different from the humans I'm used to. I mean, for instance, I know that you're technically an alien, in the sense that you're not human and you're from a planet that isn't Earth. Which, if I understand correctly, are the two criteria. But...you just aren't that fundamentally 'other'. Now, if you looked like a tomato with teeth, I'd call that an alien."

"Well, external appearances aren't everything," the Doctor said. "Inside beats the hearts of a true Time Lord. Please take note of the plural."

"True..." Some more tea accompanied the musing, until finally Aziraphale replied, "Perhaps there just aren't any aliens, really. Just people who've been made differently and, you know, live on other planets."

Obviously, someone wasn't a terribly scientific sort of thinker.

"But be careful about saying that in front of James, my dear. He'll pester you with a thousand questions about the hows and whys of having two hearts."

The Doctor smiled at Aziraphale's explanation.

"I should offer him a chance to investigate himself, sometime. Non-surgically, of course."

"I can almost guarantee he'd take you up on that offer. James is an awfully curious sort of person. Well, I suppose most mortals are, which is good, of course. Except for the whole...getting in trouble with the tree thing, but I think we can write that off as having been part of the Plan."
