Jarod, had done a little bit of research into Halloween and had spent the day preparing for the holiday. He set out a very large bowl of chocolate, as well as little bottles of massage oil, feathers and little containers of body paint. Anything else that was offered to trick or treaters was strictly a business deal between the trick or treater and the offerer.

"I hadn't really thought about it," Jarod admitted, "I'm still trying to think of a proper van-warming gift. When is your birthday?"

"March 23. Still got a while to go," she says. "Yours was this summer, right?"

"Sort of," he tried to explain, "I don't know when it is for real, so I picked one that sounded good."

She frowns a little. "Seriously?"

He nodded and slid his hands into his pockets. "Yeah. Long, boring story involving a lost birth certificate."

"That sucks," Jaye says. "But at least you get to pick when. You're not stuck with a birthday on a holiday or anything."

"Having a birthday on a holiday is bad?" Jarod wondered if he should be taking notes.

"Well, the attention's not really on you then," she explains. "The plus side is that you probably get the day of school, and maybe work. The downside is that everyone's more worried about their holiday plans, and might get shafted out of presents."

"And presents are important," he nodded, not quite understanding. "But why do people give them?"

Jaye pauses.

And has no idea what the actual reason is.

So she answers, "Because that's one of those social mores everyone can agree on."

"Well, thank you for telling me, then. I wouldn't want to offend someone by accident."

"See, I'm telling you, I'm good at this," she says.

He laughed. "You are. You make a good guru, Jaye."

She grins and says, "If you really want to get me a van warming present, a plaque saying 'Jaye Tyler, guru'... That would rule."

"I can probably arrange that," he decided. "Is this going to be a stationary van?"

She considers this. "Hm. On one hand, it means having to get a car. On the other, it means not having to drive my house around. I think it's a possibility."

"Vans aren't very fuel efficient," he said helpfully. "You might want to get something smaller."

"Like a Geo?"

"Or a bike?"

[fates_jaye]

"But that takes energy."

"Not if you tied it to the back of something?"

She nods, doing that pointing thing iike she likes the way he thinks. "I like the way you think."

"Thanks. You've got a good brain, too." Which wasn't the same thing, but he meant it as a compliment.

"Thanks," she says. "The trick is sometimes taking it out for walks."

She looks at the Snickers in her hand like the sugar intake is to blame for her being weird.

Jarod might have been in Fandom just a little too long. "Um, metaphorically speaking, or on a leash?"
