James T Kirk Memorial Causeway, Saturday Late Morning

Contrary to any weather patterns on the island or the mainland, the causeway was shrouded in a thick fog. Its tendrils were slowly spreading out through the streets of Fandom; if it continued at the same rate the entire town would be fog bound in a few hours. It was cold and damp and dismal, the perfect weather for a viking raid.

Or in this case...

If anyone was around, they would have heard a sound like distant rhythmic thunder start to come out of the fog. It got louder and closer until it became possible to pick out many rough deep inhuman voices in it, along with the rhythmic boom, boom of many large feet hitting the ground in unison.

Gradually large dark shadows appeared in the fog, revealing themselves as very large, very ugly.... things. If anyone was watching and knew anything about certain non-human species, they would've recognised them as trolls.

Row upon row of lots of big, ugly, vicious, dim-witted trolls stomped their way out of the fog. When they were all through, the two trolls at the head of the group called a halt to the group. You could tell they were the leaders because they both wore shiny helmets with big pointy horns on them.

"Right!" the first one, Grrarg, yelled. "We have orders. Group... you guys here," he said, waving his hand at the left handed side of the troll horde, not quite sure of counting to one. "Follow me. We go to where the females are. Protect them, stomp on anything trying to hurt them. Maybe get laid."

A cheer went up from the trolls he'd indicated, while the others looked maybe a little annoyed that they weren't chosen. Maybe not. It was hard to tell with trolls as they always looked a little annoyed.

The second leader troll, Gragrr, addressed the possibly annoyed trolls. "We go church," he said. There was a long pause as the horde waited for more, but that seemed to be Gragrr's entire motivational speech. A half-hearted cheer went up from his group more out of duty than real enthusiasm.

"Right!" Grrarg yelled, raising his large cudgel (which he called Big Stick Good For Hitting Things) over his head. "We go now! Everyone follow!"

Slowly with a lot of grumbling and other less pleasant but nonetheless usual troll noises, the group split into two and headed down the streets of Fandom to their chosen destinations.

But trolls were not known for the focus, or their dedication to a cause and as they went, a large number got distracted by all the lovely things they were passing that they could smash. As a troll brain was very small, it took little to no effort for them to forget their orders and convince themselves that they were really here to loot and pillage and rampage. Most trolls could turn anything into an imperative to loot and pillage and rampage. It was a genetic gift.

So it was that the groups that arrived at Efferton and at the church were much smaller than the groups that had started out from the causeway. And there were random groups of trolls running around Fandom having a trollish good old time hitting and smashing things.

Bel hadn't found anything at Selkie Cove, so now he was storming through town, trying to find some trace of Phoebe or Lana. Instead he found...what the hell?

"What the hell are you doing?" Bel said, crossing his arms across his chest. "Who are you?"

Oh yeah. Bel was just itching for a fight. These guys looked big and tough but he was in the mood to take them all on. He conjured up a fireball.

Bel let the fireball fly, of course completely confident it would take the creature out.

Wilson was on his way down to the clinic. He'd been in the apartment all day placing holiday orders while Phale was on the mainland buying decorations and gifts of his own, so Wilson had no idea what was going on in the town.

He was quickly getting the feeling that something, definitely was not right.

The flash of fire out of the corner of his eye, caught his attention and Wilson moved in Bel's direction, not immediately spying the trolls.

"Bel!?"

Yes, it has been noted on occasion that Wilson had the self presevation instincts of a suicidal squirrel.

Well, that wasn't good.

Bel caught Wilson's arrival out of the corner of his eye. "Get out of the way!" he shouted, then let a second, bigger fireball go at the charging troll.

Yipe!

Ducking, more on reflex than with any real plan in mind, Wilson spun around to get out of the way, ducking behind a bit of wall.

"What the hell?!?"

"I don't know what the hell they are, but my fireballs aren't doing anything!" Bel called out to Wilson. Fine, he'd deal with them hand to hand. He shifted into his demon form and braced himself for the first troll's charge.

Bel reached up to catch the club as it came down, simultaneously aiming a punch at the troll's jaw. Maybe brute force would work to bring this thing down.

"That's not good." Wilson said, stating the bleeding obvious and he felt his heart leap up in his throat as he saw Bel shift to demon form and then face down the troll.

It was times like this when Wilson wanted to be able to do something! Weilding Phale's sword not!dirty would be a start...if Wilson thought he could even pick it up.

But the hard truth was, the best thing he could do for Bel was get the hell out of the way.

"Don't get dead!" He ordered, before using the chaos of the first charge to dart away so that Bel didn't have to worry about his wee mortal ass being under foot.

Bel stumbled back but kept his balance. These things were tough, but he wasn't about to back down yet. He barred his teeth and snarled, lunging forward at the lead troll.

Bel grappled with the troll, trying to fling it to the ground, but its strength matched or maybe even exceeded his. And with his companions closing in, Bel was beginning to realize that maybe he was just a little outmatched.

Bel hit the ground with a grunt. He rolled over on to his back, looking up as the troll raised its club over his head. As much as he hated it, he knew he was outnumbered and outmatched. Best thing to do would be to get the hell out of there and figure out a plan of attack somewhere else. He shimmered out of the street and back to the school.
