Empire Records; Monday [ 12/18 ]

Chad's head hurt. He wasn't quite sure what was going on, but his books seemed to have been merciless in their attempts to strike him unconscious by thunking him in the back of the head; they probably figured that it would be his only point of weakness. Silly books. Chad had no point of weakness. Well, not in that consideration of the word, anyway. If they'd been showing him pictures of cute fluffy kitten and little puppies instead of attacking him, he would have easily succumbed.

Needless to say, in between tasks at work, Chad was studying via notes.

Chad glanced up from the oh-so-engaging world religions notes. "Hey, Pippi."

"Hey Chad. What's up?"

"Books," Chad responded, rubbing the back of his head ruefully. "Seem to have gone hostile."

"Yes they have at that." Pippi nodded. "Hey... What do you know about music from the 50's?"

Chad gave a thoughtful grunt as he figured out exactly what he did know about music of the fifties. "Rock'n'Roll was fun, and I mean, hell, Elvis..."

It's probably notable that Pippi is dressed in 50's style clothing, right down to her "Pink Ladies" jacket.

"Oooh, Elvis... What do you have in early Elvis?"

"Well, we got a lot," Chad said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Pretty sure there's an early collection in there. He should be over in the 'P's if you wanna have a look and Jamie didn't switch 'em out of order again."

Pippi wandered over to the section.

:Why would he do that?"

"I don't actually know if it's him," Chad admitted, "but there've been times I've come in on Wednesday and had to put 'em all back in order, so..."

"Could be gremlins, I guess."

Pippi nodded. "They're sneaky little buggers."

"So, what's the cute get-up for?"

"Oh, I'm helping Parker with something." Pippi said.

"That requires fifties-style clothes and, apparantly, music as well?"

"Well, the music is just 'cause I like music." Pippi shrugged. "Besides, I don't know how far we're gonna be driving and it could be nice to have some."

Chad nodded in agreement with this. "That's true."

"But that's all you're gonna tell me? Helping Parker with something?"

"I kinda promised not to tell." Pippi said. "I'll tell ya all about it when it's done."

Chad considered this for a moment before deciding, "That's fair."

"Oh good." she grinned. "... Wait, what would you do if it wasn't?"

It was a really good question, one he wasn't quite sure he knew the answer to. "Be sad?"

Chad seems to look sad by default even if he isn't, so actually sad Chad must be very sad indeed.

Just thinking about it is almost painful.

"I think that would break my heart."

"Your heart? Imagine what'd mine feel like." His hand drifted to his chest, but his expression didn't look too terribly pained. It didn't look like much of anything at all, really.

"Me, too," Chad said, and allowed a small grin.

It had taken quite a bit of pondering, but Clark finally decided to get christmas presents for Jimmy and Lois, despite having had no contact with them for months now.

"Hello." He greeted the tall boy at the counter. He then immediately swatted at a book of sheet music that had launched itself at him. Strange, John Lennon was normally such a peace loving guy.

It probably had something to do with Yoko.

"Hello, sir," Chad rumbled respectfully. "Can I help you with anything?"

"I'm doing some last minute christmas shopping." clark said. "I need something a teenager from the early 80's/late 70's would like." He was pretty sure he could find something that Lois would like himself.

Last minute? Chad turned his head to check the calender real quick to see if he lost a week. Nope, still the eighteenth. Good.

"Early eighties, late seventies, huh? Well, d'ya want something from that era, or freak 'im out a bit with something a little after his time?"

Hmm, well Jimmy struck him as the curious sort...

"Maybe something a little after his time, nothing too wild though, he's that that type of kid."

"Nothing too wild?" Chad grunted a bit. "That's no fun. What sort of stuff is he into, normally?"

Truth to tell Clark had never heard Jimmy play any music. The boy was always too busy dashing around with his camera. But he thought of the way he dressed. "Uh, nerd, nerd chic?"

"Nerd chic," Chad nodded thoughtfully. "Tell me, sir. How early eighties are we talkin', here?" He was starting to narrow in on an idea, but this would be an important part of it.

clark had to remind himself of the actual year he came from, having lived in 2006 for so many months. "I believe back home we're gearing up for 1981."

Chad nodded again, a deep hum in his throat. "Okay, one more question. You said nerd chic. Are we talkin', like, comic books and sci-fi nerd? Academic nerd? Or other?"

"Academic, and also other."

Another low, rumbling hum. That did sort of take him off the path he was going, but he still had an idea. "Hold on one sec, sir," Chad said, hopping over the counter and shifting through several of the rows of CDs; he returned with a small handful of them, spreading them out on the counter, leaning forward and pointing as he explained.

"Okay, so...here's what I came up with. If he's all sciency, you definately want to go with Devo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devo) here; science geeks love this shit. If that's not so much the case, maybe some of this, Oingo Boingo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oingo_Boingo), kind of in the same vein, but a little more rock, definately riding on the techno wave that's gonna be starting up around this time, so your friend'll be right on the cutting edge of the hip underground stuff."

Chad paused a moment to clear his throat. "Now, if you wanna shy away from the techno stuff but still in the hip, there's these guys, . Very cool, folky-rock, almost country, but so much cooler. But if that's still too new and different than you think would work for him, R.E.M. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.E.M._%28band%29)'s coming out at about this time, they're a little more mainstream."

Chad had to lick his lips a moment. "Now, this is all also really influenced by my own tastes, but it's a start."

Clark looked at the selection. They weren't quite at cd's yet in his time, but he could just as easily record these onto cassete for Jimmy.

"I think," he said. "that I'll go with Violent Femmes and REM."

"Excellent," Chad rumbled, starting to ring the CDs up.

And, of course, he'd thought of that fact. "Could I also interest you in including a portable CD player with the CDs? Was before my time, but I'm pretty sure he'll need something to play 'em on. We have a great selection."

"Might blow his mind, but yes, that's probably a good idea."

"Gauranteed to be a gift he'll remember then," Chad said, with a significant nod.
