Empire Records, 1/5 [Open]

Kaylee was just a wee bit more cheerful than usual. It might have something to do with the fact that there are a lot of new people on the island. Some might even stop by the store today. Of course, she'd be available to help anyone who might need it.

Empire was open.

Steerpike entered in the early afternoon, figuring that the place where they kept the town records would be an excellent spot to seek employment, even if it didn't have a "help wanted" sign, as Mac had told him to look for.

He was rather taken aback by the interior, however, and kind of stood in the doorway looking shell-shocked for several moments.

Kaylee glanced at the potential customer curiously. "Can I help you?"

"Ah, yes, I may have used the wrong door, is the the Record house of the Empire?"

"Yep," Kaylee said, figuring he must be new even though he strongly resembled one of the current students. "Lookin' for anythin' in particular?"

"I was thinking of seeking employment, believing myself to have potential as a librarian of town records, but. . . ." He looked bewildered as he looked about the store again. "I confess I don't know what to make of these small, brightly decorated boxes. They are unlike any record books I've ever seen before."

"Oh!" Kaylee said, suddenly getting it. "This ain't a library or a place where town records are kept. We sell music here. Those are CDs."

Steerpike considered this. "Then why, when you sell music kept in . . . seedees, is the establishment listed as the record hall of the empire?"

Willow had gone into town to get something to eat and decided to stop by Empire and see how Kaylee was doing. "Hey Kaylee!"

"These are different kind of records, the kind that play music," Kaylee explained. "Ain't real sure where the Empire part comes from."

"Hi Willow!" Kaylee said, giving her friend a wave.

"How's it going?" Willow asked. "Everything okay?"

"I still miss Joxer, but...it's gettin' better," Kaylee said honestly.

"That's good," Willow said. "It can take time but I can swear it gets better. Did you have a good holiday?"

Steerpike nodded slowly. "But how do you play them?"

"I did," Kaylee replied. "Went home to Serenity for a few days. How was yours?"

"Good," Willow said. "Peter and I went to his dimension for what was actually about a month and a half. I got to be all courtly and watch him in a tournament."

"You put them in those," Kaylee said, indicating some of the CD players on a shelf nearby. "I could show ya if you want."

"Ooh, that sounds real excitin'," Kaylee said. "I bet he did well, huh?"

"He did great," Willow said. "Also? He looked really hot doing it. Not that I don't love him for his personality but the outside package makes for a nice bonus."

"Nothing wrong with admirin' the outside package," Kaylee said, nodding. "Did you just get back?"

"Yesterday," Willow said. "You?"

"That would be very kind of you, ma'am. Thank you."

"I got back right before the new year," Kaylee said. "And I moved into a new room. I'm also on the fifth floor now."

"Yay!" Willow clapped. "Oh that's great! Which room are you in? Are you close to me and Marie?"

"No problem!" Kaylee said, reaching for a random pop CD. She placed it into the player, making sure he could see what she was doing.
