Caritas, Monday Evening

Jarod was back at the laptop, working on his continuing project, and anticipating a quiet night. Whether he would get one remained to be seen.

And then he saw the headline. "Mother of two dies in lab accident. Son leaves college to care for sister." Hmm. This required further investigation. He saved the document he'd been working on, and started searching the newspaper's archives, the coroner's report, and the police report. He'd make a list of theories and suspects when he got somewhere with paper.

Jack was looking very pleased with himself as he walked into Caritas - right up until he remembered who was working. He stopped when he spotted Jarod, then shrugged and grabbed a seat at the bar to wait for Rose. "Jarod," he greeted, deliberately cheerful. "Long time no see. Get a guy a drink?"

Lana stopped in and came up to the bar a little nervously. "Hey," she said quietly to Jarod.

Lana smiled a little uncomfortably at him. She'd hoped not to run into anyone she knew while she was here to apologize to Jarod. And Jack, it would have to be Jack, one of the few men she hadn't run into and therefore hadn't tried to throw herself at...

Jarod tried not to grit his teeth. If Jack was faking pleasantries, so would he. "It has been a while. What's your pleasure?"

Jarod put down the glass he was cleaning, came around the bar, and hugged her. "Hey. You feeling better?"

"If we go into that, we'll be here all night." And there was no mistaking that smile for anything but a smirk. "For the moment, a beer, whatever's on tap, and when my lovely companion gets here we'll move on to the fun stuff."

"Companion?" Jarod really had no desire to watch Jack and Parker together, even now. He poured Jack's beer and placed it in front of him. "Moved on, have you?"

Lana looked utterly surprised at that reaction, but also very relieved. "I'm good. And really sorry about the way I treated you."

Jack smiled back at her, looking a bit puzzled, because as far as he knew he hadn't done anything that would make her uncomfortable. Unless she was bothered by the fact that he wouldn't talk to her when he was the Beast? "Hey, Lana. Everything okay?"

"I understand something was going on that weekend," Jarod said as he stepped back. Not that he might not still have had to bail Parker out of jail, but Lana's behavior had been very unusual. "And I've definitely had worse nights than having a pretty girl want to spend time with me."

"Thanks," he said as he slid a bill across the counter. "Keep the change. And nope. A guy can have a bit of fun with a new friend without moving on. It helps keep life interesting."

"Good, just..." She shook her head. Oh, what the hell. Mr. Aziraphale had been very much in favor of getting things out there and not hiding them. "Just working on making amends for my behavior during that crazy weekend. I... wasn't very good."

Jarod rang the price into the register, then left the rest on the bar. People had been known to change their minds. "It definitely does."

Lana blushed. "Yeah, a lot of us seemed to turn into other people. Literally. Or in my case, into other versions of ourselves."

She ducked her head. "I always seem to be thanking you for helping me when I can't help myself. You were... really good to me and I was pretty unpleasant in response. I think I feel worse about that than even about the throwing myself at you part."

"You said it," Jarod smiled at her, "You weren't yourself. I'd have to be a real jerk to hold that against you."

"It wasn't you, you know," he told her. "And you're not the only one, not that that helps much." He tapped his fingers on the bar while he studied her. "I actually saw you, in the park. I was tall, dark, and hairy."

"And you're about as far from that as a person could get," Lana replied. "But still, I wanted to apologize in person. And thank you for trying so hard to take care of me, despite myself."

Jack raised an eyebrow at the change as he took a long drink of his beer. "Anything new and exciting in your life?" he asked, leaning forward with his elbows on the bar. Not that he cared, but he was feeling garrulous -- the fact that he was pretty sure Jarod didn't want to talk to him was just an added bonus.

"You saw me?" Lana repeated. "In..."

Her eyes widened. "The Not!Lion? That was you?"

Jarod raised an eyebrow. He definitely didn't want to talk about Jaye with Jack, either. "Bailed Parker out, but nothing in particular. Hey, do you know any platinum blondes in red dresses?" If anyone would know who kissed Jarod, it would be Jack.

"You're welcome," Jarod said, slightly uncomfortable with all the attention, "and it is good to see you. I worried you wouldn't come in again."
