Turtle & Canary; Wednesday [ 02/14 ]

There was a yellow rose weaved into Turtle's braid today, and she was actually really looking forward to today. Not because it was Valentine's Day and she expected anything romantic to happen to her, because she didn't. But because it was Valentine's Day and she could subtly mark up the prices on things like chocolates, wine, flowers, teddy bears, and condoms and compliment it with a sign that read:

Especially while Turtle's in class or if you're going to be all lovey-dovey. Yuck.

She'll be more than happy to tell you that your gift is pathetic and you should get more stuff if you really want to impress the person.

Tyler came up to the counter. "Hey, Turtle. I have some kind of special requests."

Turtle gave Tyler a worried look. "They aren't the kind of requests that cause serious deprements to my psychological well-being, are they? Let's keep in mind that I still have some innocence in tact here, okay, and would like to keep it a little longer, at least until I'm fifteen."

Tyler sighed. "Let me guess, you heard radio. And ... you doubt a guy's relationship with his goat-roommate is anything other than pure and innocent?" he asked.

"..what? Ew, no, I wasn't thinking anything like that! Man. Valentine's Day sure tends to bring out the weirdo in everyone."

Turtle shook her head signficantly, but it wasn't helping. Ugh.

"Jus' tell me what you need."

"You started it," Tyler said, looking a little guilty. "Anyhow. I need chocolate scent, cocoa and lye for a soap-making project -- where would they be?"

"Choco...cocoa, lye," Turtle repeated the items as she jotted them down on a piece of paper nearby and frowned a little as she looked at the list. "Well, the cocoa shouldn't be difficult, but..." She sighed. See, if they had their new system with the register yet, this wouldn't be a problem. Punch in a few things and, ta-da, instant results. "I'm not even sure we have some of this. Lemme go check my inventory, though; if we do have it, it's there, and it should say exactly where as well. Be right back."

She knew all that obsessive inventory would be helpful eventually.

"It's not a rush," Tyler assured her, then leaned back and grabbed a tabloid to browse while he waited.

Turtle returned a little bit later, the list updated with specifics on where to find each item. "You lucked out," she said, with a slight grin as she handed the paper over, "we actually do have all those things. Then again, we do kind of have everything here."

"But I gotta ask: who the heck needs chocolate soap?"

"We were kind of hoping girls would," Tyler admitted. "I've made soaps before and you can make a crazy amount of money because the ingredients are so cheap."

he glanced over the paper. "Thanks."

...Crazy amounts of money, you say? The sharpness at which Turtle's attention went to Tyler was a wee bit frightening.

"You know," she said, thinking about this a little, "if you're looking for a distributer or a marketer for that sort of thing, I might have a little bit of an interest in investing..."

That would definitely be easier than Tyler's plan of selling it door-to-door. "It's an option," he said. "Let me check with my partner" -- once he quit being a goat -- "and we'll get back to you." He paused before heading into the aisles. "Would Turtle & Canary selling the soaps on consignment be an option?"

"Naturally," Turtle nodded.

Tyler grinned, then went back into the store to get the supplies. "I think this is everything," he said, placing them carefully on the counter. "Thanks for your help, Turtle."

"Hey, no problem," Turtle grinned as she jotted down the totals on the receipt pad (dear register, please come soon!) to work out a total, slightly discounted, for a new potential business partner. "It is my job, after all."

Marco came into the store and leaned on the counter. "Hey Turtle!"

"Hey, Marco," Turtle smiled in greeting, "what's up?"

"Not much. You're a girl, right?" Marco asked with a mischevious grin.

Turtle looked at him with a slight 'duh' look. "Uh, yeah, last time I checked."

"So say, in theory, I have a date for the dance. What would you, or any girl, expect her date to bring her, flower wise? Or nothing at all?"

"It would have to be in theory," Turtle muttered, with a snide smirk. "And any girl, of course, would expect only the nicest flowers available." And by nicest, Turtle meant most expensive. Of which they had a wide variety of nice, expensive arrangements her at Turtle & Canary. "But just flowers wouldn't cut it, either, you know. A girl would also expect chocolates. Maybe a cute stuffed animal, as well. It's the only way to do it if you want to do it right."

Marco looking out into the store and then back at Turtle. "What would it take to convince you to help me choose all of the above?"

"Wouldn't take much at all," Turtle grinned a little. "I'd be happy to help." Much easier to get someone to buy more that way. "Besides, it's kind of my job, you know? They don't just pay me to sit here and look pretty, and if you say a single word suggesting that it's a good thing because then I wouldn't make much money at all, I will kick you so hard going to the dance won't matter because you won't be able to move your leg."

And she beamed sweetly at Marco.

Marco prossed that paragraph. "First of all, I wouldn't say that because I do think you'd earn quite a bit if you were paid just to look pretty. But then that sounds dirty, so please don't kick me. Also? You'd have a lot of trouble kicking me so much that I couldn't move my leg Friday." Marco grinned.

Turtle decided that she really did need to start carrying a recorder around with her so that next time she caught a gem like that, she'd have it for posterity. She didn't think it sounded dirty at all; it just sounded like Marco admitting she was pretty which, insane as it was, filled her with a sort of glee. Ha. He thought she was pretty. She felt accomplished, like she'd won something, although she wasn't sure quite what she had won.

"True," she finally said, wrinkling her nose but unable to keep from grinning, "but you better believe that I'd try really hard to do it. Not even super crazy healing powers or whatever the heck they are can dissuade Turtle Wexler."

SquishyBot wouldn't stop beeping until Turtle had decorated it a little with pink, red, and white streamers, almost as if it was expecting someone and wanted to look festive....

The fact that today is stressful Wednesday weighs out the fact that it's Valentine's Day. *wibble*

ooc: in case you want to know but do not - lye can be found in most but not all plumbing supplies (red evil, etc) i know, i have made soap using it :)
