Caritas, Thursday February15

Phoebe made herself come into work, even though she would have rather stayed hiding in her dorm room.

The zombie band didn't know what was wrong, but they did their best to try to make her smile at them. It worked a few times. Tino was silent as he helped her tape the zombies back together.

"Flag football means you tear the flag off of each other, not body parts," Phoebe advised them.

She got everything in order and then unlocked the club.

Caritas was open.

The band will play anything you like.

Phoebe is behind the bar trying to keep busy -- and avoiding looking at one barstool in particular.

"Greetings, fellow human."

Phoebe mmanaged to force a small smile. "Hey, Pip."

"How's you? I haven't seen you in a while."

Pain crossed her face. "Cole's gone," she said quietly.

"...Oh Jesus," Pip said. "...Jesus... Phoebe... I..."

Phoebe tried to blink back the tears. "We weren't able to save him..."

Pip reached across the bar and squeezed her hand.

Phoebe squeezed his hand back.

"Phoebe, I've seen a lot of death. A whole lotta death. And I've had a lot of people die on me. So it is now my person mission to make sure you understand one very important thing."

She blinked back tears. "What's that, Pip?"

"It wasn't your fault," Pip said.

Phoebe tried to smile. "I know... but my sisters and I were the one that had to vanquish the demon possessing his body..."

"And I had to pull the trigger to shoot Walter in the heart when he was a vampire," Pip said. "But you can't let yourself take the entire blame. That's a very slippery slope."

Phoebe nodded. "It's indeed very slippery, Pip," she agreed. "It's just... it hurts so much that I coldn't save him and that we had to take down the evil and he took Cole with him..."

Pip nodded. "Would Cole have wanted to keep going, though? If it meant being something that would hurt all of you?"

Phoebe shook her head. "He would have wanted me and everyone else completely safe," she said softly. "He would have wanted me not to be corrupted, either. So, he wouldn't have wanted to be the instrument that would cause pain."

Anders was here, just to keep Phoebe company -- leaning against the bar and being pretty quiet himself.

Phoebe gave him a small smile and was grateful he was there.

Lana stopped in long enough to pop behind the bar and give Phoebe a hug. "I need to go check on Jim, see if I can get some food into him. But I'm just a phone call away. And I'm free all day tomorrow except for my class with the doctor."

Phoebe hugged her. "Okay. I'll probably be in my room tomorrow."

"Call me," Lana said. "Or I'll just come find you."

Here's a nice place to sit and talk, or hide.
