Empire Records, 2/20 [Open]

Kaylee opened Empire Records on time and settled behind the counter with her Fairy Tales reading assignment. If anyone needed her, she'd surely set that aside to help.

Today's music? Boy bands.

Conner wandered into Empire sometime that afternoon, and perhaps inspired by Kaylee's choice of music, wandered over to peruse boy band CDs.

. . . the boy had an inexplicable affinity for derivative pop, okay?

He happened to run across an album in the D section that kind of intrigued him (please, please don't ask why), so he picked it up and eyed the back of the CD case for the track listing.

And as he took it up to the counter, he started to snicker.

A lot.

Kaylee grinned at Conner as he approached the counter. "Hi Conner. See somethin' ya like?"

Conner held up the CD. "Uh huh," he said, grinning in a halfway frightening way. He really had no shame about his appalling musical tastes, sometimes. "How's it going, Kaylee?"

"I don't think I heard them yet," Kaylee said, glancing at the CD. And really, she had no shame about her appalling musical tastes either. After all, she is the one who chose today's music. "I'm good. How 'bout you?"

"I'm great," Conner said, cheerful despite the scratches that hinted at his spectacular faceplant while trying out Eric's friend's skateboard over the weekend. "Got to go see my brother in an inline skating competition this weekend, I got a mysterious love note, life is good."

"Sounds like a good weekend," Kaylee said. "Awww, you got a secret admirer?"

"Looks like," Conner agreed. He was smugly grinning fit to kill. "So it's kind of a bummer I missed the Valentine's dance, but I promised my brother I'd go."

"Hope you find out who it is soon," Kaylee said. "And I'm sure There'll be more dances..."

"Oh, yeah, I know there will." Conner nodded and drummed on the CD case with his fingers. "Did you go?"

"Yeah, went with Al," Kaylee said. "We had a nice time. Well, I did. I think he did, too."

She peered at the CD. "You gettin' anything else, or is that it for today?"

"Aw." Conner grinned. The mental image was cute. "That sounds like it was fun."

His grin grew even wider and possibly more worrisome. "No, I think that'll be all for now."

"Hope you like it. You'll have to let me know how it is," Kaylee said.

"Oh, don't worry," Conner assured her. "You'll definitely hear from me about it."

He totally did a dorky boy-band dance step right there.

Kaylee giggled and then applauded. "That was real shiny."

Conner blinked at her. "No, I'm just wearing jeans."

Kaylee giggled again. "No, shiny means good in this case."

"Oh!" Conner laughed. "Thanks."

He'd never admit he practiced that in front of the mirror when Neil wasn't in the room.

"I bet you'd be good on that reality singing competition show," Kaylee said, grinning.

"Bad idea," Conner replied, chuckling. "Really bad idea. Really, really, really bad idea."

Why? Because he thought his ego might not be able to handle it. But again, so not admitting that out loud.

"I bet even that really mean judge would have good things to say," Kaylee added.

Conner considered this for a moment. "Nah," he said finally. "I could handle the karaoke scene, but like, what if I, like, won on that show? I'd have to try and balance out some recording career with soccer, and I'd never have enough time in my day, and then Kira would kill me."

"I can see how that'd be an issue," Kaylee said, nodding. "Especially the part about the killin.'"

Conner gave her the puppydog face. You know, The Puppydog Face (tm). "You wouldn't want me to get killed, would you?"

"Course not!" Kaylee said, unable to resist the puppydog face. "You're too pretty nice to die."

"Aw, thanks," Conner said as he reached for his wallet. "So don't tempt me any more, 'kay?"

"I'll try not. Promise," Kaylee agreed.

"I appreciate that, Kaylee," Conner said cheerfully, handing over the money for the CD.

The reality TV-watching world probably would, too.

Kaylee took the money, placing it in the register. She retrieved some change ahd handed it over. "Enjoy the CD!"

"Oh," Conner said blithely as he pocketed his change, "I plan to. Talk to you later, Kaylee!"
