Alamo Day!

True, it wasn't a religious holiday. But it was a great excuse to ressurrect the cowboy costume from Halloween and run around with Chrono in an epic Nerf gun battle around the church. And that's what really mattered, after all.

River quietly slipped into the church and dodged a Nerf dart. "Hello?" she called out.

Rosette peeked her head out from behind a pew, gun ready and aimed, but she pulled back when she saw who it was and smile. "Oh, River!" She stood and tilted her cowboy hat. "Howdy."

Chrono appeared from behind another pew on the other side of the church, a dart stuck in his hair, brushing off the front of his shirt. He needed to be cleaning under the pews better.

River smiled. The hat suited Rosette and reminded River of the hats worn on various border moons.

"Need singing?" She asked and without waiting for a reply she began to dance a country dance up and down the aisle, singing a folk tune while dancing.

"Could always use singing around here," Rosette said with a smile, after watching River for a bit and moving toward one of the front pews, closer tot he center aisle, and slumped into a seat. She tossed her cowboy boots up on the one in front of her and reloaded her Nerf gun.

River stopped, and slumped down in one of the pews too. "No choir still?"

"'Fraid not," Rosette said with a soft smile. "Granted, wouldn't do much good, though, to have a choir and no congregation to sing to. I'd enjoy it, but it'd also probably make me feel homesick, and it's just a little selfish to have a choir just for my entertainment..."

"Not just for you. Choir for the choir. If they enjoy singing." River lay down on the pew. "Does God exist?"

Rosette blinked at the girl lying in the pew, and shook her head, a reflection of her first, immediate answer. "Oof, River," she said, possibly by way of answering the question for both River and herself, "that's quite a jump in conversation."

"Yes." River acknowledged that it was. "Just wondered." She fell silent.

"Well," Rosette said after a moment, after struggling with herself for a bit as to whether outright lie and assure the girl that, yes, there was, or to try and explain that, concievably, there was one. Chrono's existence in itself, as something created to work against the creation of God, proved that there must be one. Lucifer, Aziraphale. Their existance also testified to the existence of something like God. But all that was never proof enough for Rosette. She could believe in demons because she knew demons. They were a part of her life, without a shadow of a doubt. God, on the other hand....

"...Do you think there is?"

River frowned. "Not sure. Don't think angels and demons are proof enough either. They could be misinformed."

Now there was a novel concept; that beings such as Lucifer and Aziraphale could all be under the influence of one great, elaborate ruse. Smirking sardonically, Rosette closed one eye and aimed her gun toward the cross hanging above the alter. She made a soft, shooting sound, but did not pull the trigger, only brought the gun back up and rolled her head a little toward River.

"They say the main thing about God is that you have to have faith that He exists," she offered. "Not proof, just faith. So maybe faith is the real God."

...Pity she didn't have any. Not any more, anyway.

"Don't have faith either," River replied. "Seems comforting. But it's gone." She smiled at Rosette. "But some people I trust."

Rosette smiled back, but the smile was sad. The only one she could really trust...was herself.

"Then you're luckier than most, River. Trust is just a different kind of faith anyway; I mean, when you trust someone, aren't you really just putting your faith in them that they'll do what you hope, or won't let you down, or betray you?"

"I'm lucky," River agreed. "They do what I hope and sometimes more than that." She thought for a moment. "And sometimes less. Not a lot less, but it still hurts."

Rosette nodded. "Trust is hard." Her eyes drifted past River to Chrono for a minute; he looked back briefly before turning away, casting his eyes down. She sighed. "Definately hard..."

River noticed the look between them. "No?" she asked, meaning 'you don't trust him?'

"Hm?" Rosette tilted her head a bit, blinking at River, not really sure she followed the intention of the question.

"Chrono," River said. "You don't trust him?"

"Oh." Rosette blinked at the little demon, and Chrono cleared his throat as if to remind them that he was there and could hear what they said. Which made Rosette smile a little. It wasn't as if he didn't know that their bond to each other only went so far...

"Only as far as I can throw him," she responded, the grin growing a bit more. "Thankfully, he's light, so that gives him more leeway than others."

River found that comment funny and began to laugh.

Over the laughing River, Chrono was looking at Rosette with his eyes filled with a shine shared with kicked puppy dogs, and she responded with a shrug, then a grin. She shot a Nerf dart at him before joining River in the laughing, starting as a chuckle but eventually bubbling up into something more.

Life was too short to waste your time being all depressed over things you can't control when you could be laughing instead.

Chrono was a little slower, but, eventually, he joined in a little, too.

Laughing felt good. "I have a spaceship," River mentioned.

That only made Rosette laugh harder, even if she wasn't entirely sure what a spaceship was. She could guess, though. The whole idea of people going into space just blew her mind still. "River, you have got to be one of the most random people I have ever met. I love it. Don't ever lose that."

"Random doesn't exist," River pointed out. "It's just what we call that which is too complex fo comprehension."

She was still laughing.
