Turtle & Canary; Wednesday [ 03/07 ]

Turtle took a deep breath as she opened the store. She'd really, really missed this place. And the cash register and the SquishyBot and Liz and Cube and the sweet smell of commerce in the morning. She didn't miss Apu, though, because he was making comments about her laziness for having not been there that week. You can probably guess how that turned out.

Today's Squishy Flavors: Jalepeno, Pomegranate, Red.

Especially while Turtle's in class. Don't mind the limping. No, he doesn't want to talk about it.

She's going through the super-cool database to track how sales did while she was gone, and finding it the most incredible thing in the world, which explains the occasional burst of excited squealing.

Willow came in after her classes and went up to the counter. "Hello! I need some help putting together a gift basket."

"Oooh, gift baskets!" Turtle bounced a little and finally put the scanning device down. She still could giggle over the beep, and how it showed up on the database, and even how to remove it as an erroneous charge from the database... "For who and what for? And how big are we looking at?"

"For my BFF/roommate," Willow said. "She has recently had a happy change of fortune in her life so I thought it'd be nice to help her celebrate it in the proper way. Size-wise maybe a medium?"

Willow held her hands out to indicate the general size of the basket.

Turtle nodded, and jotted down medium-large basket on a little slip of paper to give to Apu so he could go get all the items they decided to put the gift basket. They had to pay him to do something around here, after all.

"Hm, so, happy change of fortune. Celebratory snacks comes to mind, like really good chocolate, and a bottle of wine, maybe, for starters. What sorts of things is your BFF/roommate really into?"

"I've got a list," Willow said, because she was geeky like that. She took it out of her pocket. "Chocolate is good. Liquid-wise I was thinking Gatorade? Maybe in a variety of flavors?"

"Oh, I like that. Then it will also give the basket a very colorful and cheerful look," Turtle's head bobbed as she scribbled down her own list. "What else've you got?"

"Condoms," Willow said. "Here too I was thinking a variety of types? I also feel we can't have too many, considering who her boyfriend is."

Turtle may have blanched a little at that one, and swallowed, and decided she wasn't going to ask who Willow's BFF/roommate's boyfriend was because she really, really didn't want to know. With great reluctance, she added those to her list as well, and, in an effort to seem helpful and not put off by the topic, offered, "And those can be colorful to match the Gatorade, too..."

Her mind was also at that point matching Gatorade to a certain someone, which lead to matching all these images together, which made Turtle almost squeak as she forged ahead very quickly, "What else?"

"I don't suppose you sell handcuffs?"

Thankfully, Turtle was still naive enough to not know what that insinuated, and she jotted it down on her way to recovery. "We sell everything at Turtle & Canary," she replied.

Unfortunately, Turtle was also still naively curious. "Why handcuffs? Does your friend want to be a cop or something?"

"Or her boyfriend might," Willow said. "Oh! And make sure they come with keys. Wacky hijinks otherwise."

Turtle quickly jotted down with keys. "What else?"

"Hmm," Willow looked around. "Maybe some pasta? And sauce? It could help with the carbo-loading."

"Is carbo-loading essential?" Turtle asked, certainly not by way of arguing, because she was already writing down a short list of pasta-making things.

"It helps to make sure you have extra energy," Willow said. She checked her own list. "I think that's it. Unless you have suggestions?"

Turtle pretended to be looking through her list as her mind was urging her to think of something else. "Music," she settled on. "You should include some music. Might as well get it here, too, instead of making the extra trip to the record store."

"Good idea," Willow said. "How about a collection of love songs?"

"I think that sounds perfect," Turtle nodded and tore the sheet of paper from the small notebook and held it out for Apu. "Go get it, Apu. And look sharp. I don't care that you've got a limp, we don't want to keep our customers waiting."

Turtle grinned at Willow. "When he gets back, we can put it together and decorated it with ribbons and stuff."

"Yay!" Willow bounced. "Thank you so much for your help. I really think she's going to like this."

"Oh, defiantely," Turtle nodded, and started finding a bunch of different ribbons for Willow to pick and choose from. "It's a pretty freakin' sweet gift basket, I do say."

And then a thought struck her as she was pulling out a roll of pink. "She's not a coffee drinker, is she? Coffee drinkers love coffee stuff in their gift baskets."

"Do you think the caffiene would be dehydrating?" Willow asked.

"Well, yeah, but wouldn't the Gatorade help counteract that?"

"Plus it's possible they could use the extra pep," Willow said. "Okay, let's add some in."

Turtle nodded, and relayed the message to Apu via the very high-tech intercom they had of her cupping her hands and shouting it over to him. He very soon returned with all the items and Turtle set out the basket on the counter and looked over the items, thinking of how to best start organizing them in the basket.

"Big items in the middle, small stuff all around?" Willow suggested. "And then there could be the wrapping of colorful cellphane and ribbons!"

"Yup!" Turtle agreed and, tongue poking out of the corner of her mouth, set to starting to organize everything all nice and pretty.

"It looks great," Willow told her. "I really appreciate your help with this."

"Hey, no problem," Turtle said. "S'what I'm here for."

Willow reached into her pocketbook. "I believe now is the traditional giving of green paper products in exchange for being able to take the basket with me when I leave."

"That's my favorite part!" Turtle smirked and then joyfully punched in all the correct things with vigor and zeal on the wonderful register and come up with a bright ~~handwavey~~ total for Willow.

Willow handed over some bills. "Here you go! Keep the change as my thanks for service above and beyond the call of shopping."

Ooooh. Keep the Change! Three of Turtle's favorite words. "It was my pleasure," she assured Willow. "Have a good day! Hope your friend enjoys the gift basket, although I can't see how she couldn't!"

"I shall deliver it forthwith," Willow said. "So that she might enjoy it immediately, and also because it's fun saying 'forthwith' whenever possible."

Willow carefully gathered up the basket, tucked her raincoat around it, and waved goodbye to Turtle. "Thanks again!"

Turtle waved back and then settled in to spend a good spell of time ruminating over that word.

"Forthwith. Forthwith..." She muttered. "Forthwith." She nodded. "By George, she's right."

Cube was trying to tell Turtle about its daring escape. Unfortunately, she couldn't understand a word of it.

Well, she could understand "Cube! CUBE!" but just couldn't interpret it.

My spring break is almost over. *cries*
