Galactica Point: Tuesday mid-morning

It was cloudy, but blue sky and sunshine could be seen in the breaks. Add that to the warmth of the day (at least compared to recent weeks), and Jack had the perfect idea for how to spend some of Tuesday.

A blanket spread on the sand - with an extra in case of sudden chilly sea breezes - with a box containing some of J,GoB's finest and two sweet, rich coffees sitting beside it, and Jack settled down to wait for River.

He stretched out on his stomach, hands folded under his chin, watching the ocean, mind drifting with the waves.

[ooc: the post is as open as a beach below the wide and flowing sky, because, well, it is a beach beneath the etc etc, but thread with Jack and River locked to them, please and thank you.]

River had seen him from a distance and approached quietly, a grin on her face. Sneaking up on him, she said nothing, waiting to see how close she could get without him noticing her.

Jack had a feeling River was there, but he didn't lift his head to check. Instead, he stretched a little bit more, letting his eyes slide halfway shut as he started to smile.

As quietly as she could she knelt next to him, reaching out to run a fingertip along his arm.

Jack warmed under her touch, a little shiver travelling across his skin, as he turned his head to smile up at her. "River," he said warmly, and seeing her pushed his worries to the back of his mind.

There were worries, River sensed them, but now wasn't the time for that. She smiled back. "Good day for a picnic," she said.

"Good day for a picnic with you," he corrected with a grin. Jack sat up, brushing his fingers across her cheek, and leaned forward to kiss her, the sight and feel of her sparking happiness through him.

Kissing Jack still felt very new and at the same time completely natural. River returned the kiss, her own happiness mingling with what she felt coming from him. She rested her forehead against his. "Told people. You don't mind?"

"Nope. You can tell whoever you want, it doesn't worry me," he said, sliding one hand under her hair to rest his hand loosely at the back of her neck. "I told Sam, so she wouldn't be surprised." And she hadn't been, not really. He studied River, wondering if she was still as happy as she'd been on Sunday. "What did people say?"

River let her fingers explore their way up his arms. "Oh, happy mostly. But not as happy as I am," she said, replying to his unspoken question.

Jack thought about querying the mostly, then decided he didn't care. River's happiness was all he cared about. "Good," he said, kissing her quickly, careful not to dislodge her fingers, enjoying her exploration of him.

Stealing another quick kiss, River giggled. "I'm hungry," she said, happy not to let thoughts of other people disturb her now.

"So am I," he murmured, and he wasn't thinking about food, but he pulled away and snagged one of the coffees, offering it to her. "Caramel latte, with whip cream? Or there's one without, if you don't like frothy stuff."

River did like frothy stuff and accepted the coffee, chuckling at his thoughts. "Not too cold for that here?" she teased him. She reached for the box, too, not waiting for him to offer.

"Not too cold, but not quite private enough." Not that Jack hadn't done many, many interesting things in more public places than this, but it didn't seem quite right with River. At least not in broad daylight.

"Here," he said, arranging himself in the middle of the blanket, legs spread, and patted the spot in front of him. "Sit here? You can lean on me while you eat."

River crawled over to him and leaned against him, making a noise of satisfaction at having him close. She sipped her coffee and took a bit out of her muffin. "I'm going away this weekend," she said.

Jack folded his arms around her, resting his cheek against her hair, surprised at the stab of disappointment he felt. "Where are you going?"

"Serenity. Simon wanted to see me," she replied. "Wrote to him about Miranda." She couldn't help it, the fact that he was disappointed felt good. She reached up and stroked his hair.

"You'll be safe?" he asked, a whisper of worry creeping up on him as he bent his head into her touch. There was food and coffee, but River was better than both. He started to grin as he thought about who she was going to visit. "And say hi to your brother for me?"

"I'll be safe." Hopefully. This was Serenity after all.

She placed a muffin in his hand, hoping that might stop her from eating all of them.

"And I'll say hello," she added grinning, turning her head to look up at him. "And tell him about you."

He took a bite out of the muffin and grinned harder. "Thank you," he said as he finished it. "That's going to be an interesting conversation. Hope he doesn't decide to come after me." Another bite, and he grabbed the non-frothy coffee to wash it down, suddenly very serious. "And if something happens, find a way to get word to us. We'll come after you." Sam and Parker and Cedric, they'd all come, he was sure, if he needed them. "Okay?"

"Simon? No. And if he did I'd stop him," River said, talking with her mouth full and trying not to giggle. "And I will. If something happens," she added, her tone more serious. "But it won't. Unless too many pieces start coming off with going through atmo." She took another bite.

He tipped his head to get a better look at her face, and chuckled at her giggling. "Do pieces fall off a lot?" he asked, still slightly concerned, but if River said nothing would go wrong, he was inclined to believe her.

"Sometimes, but it's rarely fatal." She reached up to kiss him. "Would have liked to go on the trip with you though," she added, looking a little disappointed.

"I'm glad to hear it." Jack hugged her a little bit closer, one hand spread wide at her waist, setting the coffee down to brush her hair to the side and kiss the back of her neck. "Yeah, it would have been good," he said, running through various possibilities. They were running out of time, but maybe-- "We could go away for a weekend? Somewhere fun, just the two of us. Think you'd like that?"

River closed her eyes, enjoying the kisses. This was distracting her from eating. "I would like that. Just us." She'd also like to take him to Serenity, but there might not be time for that. "Where do you want to go?"
