Mauvaise Chance Office/Lobby, Tuesday [4/10]

There was logic to Xander crawling out of bed and opening the office today even though every time he opened his eye or moved his head he felt like small woodland creatures had moved into his skull to frolic and gambol AND THEN GOT SMASHED BY GODZILLA.

He couldn't handle another second in his apartment; the frog was breathing too loud.

So here he was at the desk, hiding behind a newspaper for completely different reasons sort of than the last time he was at the desk hiding behind a newspaper.

Willow? Kind of appeared like one of those cats who you don't realize has climbed into your lap until you notice you suddenly have no room for your laptop anymore.

She had thinky face on. She was also very intent on organizing and sorting things.

To the point where she was measuring paperclips to make sure they were lined up from smallest to largest.

It was possible she might soon bust out a magnifying glass so she could sub-sort them into alphabetical order by manufacturer's label.

On the one hand it kept her off the streets. On the other: scary.

It needs to be pointed out here for the scowling discerning reader that Willow was not actually on Xander's lap; it was just an excellent simile.

If she were actually on his lap, a) he wouldn't have the proper distance required to study her efforts from behind his newspaper, and b) they'd have more immediate things to discuss than the categorizing of office equipment.

"Okay, either you're mentally creating little families and life-histories for them, in which case I should probably go get some more empty kleenex boxes, or you're gearing up for a full-on obssession-session. Just the look on your face is making my headache worse."

"Aspirin," Willow said, pointing to the desk drawer that was helpfully labeled as containing the first aid gear and other medical necessities.

"Been there, ate that. I am forbidden from eating that again for another three hours."

"Did you eat something?" Willow asked. "Because aspirin on an empty stomach can lead to badness."

"Blergh."

Willow fished in the drawer for antacids and offered those to Xander. "Look! Anti-blergh, plus calcium."

"Been there, ate that too." Nonetheless, he popped two and chewed them slowly, the pounding in his head bouncing along to the sound of consturction equipment in his mouth.

"So is this drinking or demon-related?" Willow asked, possibly looking happy to keep the conversational topics off of herself.

"Have we completely ruled out the theory that all alcohol is of demonic origin?"

"Point," Willow acknowledged. "Except Zima. I don't think anybody's laying claim to that."

"Andrew," Xander responded immediately, forgetting that this Willow wouldn't know what teh hell he was talking about yet.

"Who?" Willow immediately replied.

"Um. Tucker Wells' brother." Mentally, he apologized for that, but you had to start somewhere. "You'll understand someday."

"The guy who tried to ruin the prom?" Willow asked.

"That'd be him. You remember somebody sending monkey-demons to mess up the play?"

"Oh right." Willow nodded as it fell into place. She then sighed. "Things were a lot simpler in Sunnydale."

"You're not wrong." Xander glanced over at the row of paperclips. "There a specific complication of the day, though?"

"...no?" There was an attempt to use cuteness as a weapon.

"Okay, even the paperclips don't buy that, and as a species, they're pretty damn gullible."

"That's very mean to the paperclips."

"Not a value judgement; it's just a genetic thing."

"They try their best," Willow said. "That's why some of them grow up to be binders."

"Just so we're clear before we go on with the story about the office supplies, you totally haven't distracted me from the original question. I'm much less gullible than paperclips and also no longer drunk."

"Nuts." Willow sat back. "No hope of distracting you with the adventures that the paperclips had with the highlighters?"
