Turtle & Canary; Saturday [ 04/28 ]

Apu was a little confused when Turtle came into the store today. First, because she wasn't schedualed to actually work today. And secondly because Turtle was a lot littler and younger than she usual was. But it was definitely Turtle. "What'cha doin' jus' sweepin' the floor, Apu? We gotta get all the toys marked up a widdle before everyone comes in! And two-fer specials on choc'lite milk! Chop, chop! It's Saturday!"

Dragging some empty milk crates behind the counter, Turtle was able to construct something so that she could reach the register. She spread both herself and a copy of the Wall Street Journal out on it, looking very important as she tried to read it and pretend to understand it. "Didja see, Apu? The *grumblemutter* went up...I think. And the *grumblemutter* is all, um....sparkly and...pink....! That's so in'erestin'!"

Today's Squishy flavors: Chocolate Milk, Apple Juice, Red.

Especially since Turtle won't be able to stay there all day. She has the attention span of a five year old, all of a sudden...

Blair bounced up to the door and looked back at River, singing. "Pens, pens, pens! We're gonna buy some pens!"

River giggled. "They have lots of pens here," she said, stepping inside.

"River!" Blair tugged on her shirt. "Lets get red ones!"

"Yes," River said, "and purple ones. And some green. They're good for diagrams." She headed over to the stationary section.

Hopefully Turtle wasn't here, as Rive and her hadn't actually parted on good terms this morning.

"Die-graphs." Blair nodded seriously, following after River. "But we can color pictures too, right?"

"Yes," River said. "We can. And robot construction diagrams." She began looking through the pens available. "Zack and I started building one this morning."

"A real robot?" Blair's eyes got wide. "Does it have laser eyes?"

"Not for eyes," River said. "But it has a cutting laser beam to get through doors to surprise people by dancing for them. It's a hovering dance robot."

Blair clapped and did a little dance in how he thought a robot would dance. "But no cuttings on people. Your robot should be nice."

"It has no moral values except for what is programmed into it," River replied, but made a mental not to check the programming for 'no cutting people'.

"You should program good stuff init." Blair nodded. "Or I'm gonna hafta protest it."

"You think I would make it do bad things?" River asked, looking a little insulted.

"To bad people." Blair nodded. "Cause you like hitting bad peoples."

"Hitting bad people isn't doing bad things," River clarified. "It's protecting the public."

"You should talk it out." Blair nodded and then grabbed a handful of pens. "Or draw them pictures to show 'em how to be good!"

River had a feeling they'd had this conversation before. "Not if they're killing people," she said. "Or if they're not listening." She examined the pens in he hand.

"Look, squishies!" Blair got distracted and pointed towards the machine. "What kind do you like?"

River eyed the squishie machine. "Red is a nice colour," she said. "You?"

Blair looked around to see if there were grown ups around and then he motioned for River to come closer so he could whisper. "I like to mix them all up together in the same glass!"

River nodded happily. "Good plan. I'll watch out for any grown ups," she whispered back, then stretched, crossing her arms and attempting to look intimidating.

Blair giggled and bounced excitedly, sneaking up to the machine to grab a glass. Peeking over his shoulder at River, he whispered back to her. "Are we good to go?"

River glanced at him and nodded slowly.

Blair whistled in what he thought was a nonchalant manner but was really composed of a lot of spitting and shrill noises. He hit the lever for the red squishy and held the cup underneath.

Apu caught sight of them and hurried up to the machine. "Grown up approaching," River whispered loudly over her shoulder, backing away.

"The Man!" Blair yelped and turned off the lever, moving the cup and spilling a small amount of red squishy down his shirt. "We're not doing nothing!"

River's eyes widened and she grabbed Blair's hand. "Time to escape," she said, backing away towards the entrance.

Blair watched Apu...who was really confused by the kids actions...as he let himself be led backwards. When they reached the door, Blair thrust his squishy at Apu with a yelp and ran. "Run, River! The Man is gonna get us!"

River ran, and pulled Blair with her, not stopping to see the surprised look on Apu's face.

Blair had much shorter legs than River and while he tried to keep up, there was a point where he stumbled and fell. "Ouchie!"

River stopped, catching her breath. "Blair? Are you hurt?"

Blair sat up and looked at his hands carefully, not able to see anything past the dirt. "Maybe?"

River looked at his hands. "You need to clean the dirt off to make sure you're not bleeding and the wounds will get infected."

"Infected and fall off and then I won't got any hands and I'll have to draw with my feet." Blair said, distracted from the ouchies.

"I don't think it's as serious as that," River said, looking a little worried. "But you should clean them."

"I'll go see Dr. Wilson and Azzy." Blair nodded. "We're good 'scapers!"

River grinned. "We are! And Dr. Wilson can stop your hands from falling off."

She's got some great stock tips. Really. It's totally a good idea to put all your money into "whichever one is the most sparkly."

There were a lot of kids around. Sometimes kids needed to be bribed. So Jim went to Turtle & Canary to buy some candy. He couldn't help but laugh when he saw who was behind the counter. "Turtle?" he asked.

"HI, Jiii--" Turtle cut herself off quickly from her excited squeal because she was at work! She had to be professional! She cleared her throat, straightening her shoulders and speaking in a deeper, professional voice. "Hello, Jim. How can we be of service to you today?"

And then she beamed, because she was very pleased with her Important Person impression.

"I love this school," Jim whispered to himself.

"Seeing all of the kids around, I think that candy would be a good thing to have on hand. Do you have any recommendations?"

Of course she did. And Jim got all of them in an elaborate explaination of smushed words as Turtle showed off the limited extent of her vocabulary and scribbled charts and graphs on the newspaper with a red crayon, based on sugar content and unpronouncable ingredients. After her briefing was finished, she set the crayon down, folding her arms on the counter and imploring him with quite the serious look. "And you can take my word on it, Jim, because this is a product I know a lot about."

"You've certainly demonstrated that," Jim said. "Okay. I'll take three bags of Skittles, two bags of the assorted fun size chocolate bars, and a whole lot of Pixy Stix."

He had a plan involving an empty common room and a lot of sugar left on a table before bedtime. The plan involved him being nowhere near the common room when it happened.

If Turtle knew of Jim's plan, she would approve greatly. But insist that Jim didn't have nearly enough sugar.

"Good choices, sir!" Turtle announced as the candy was put into a bag. She went to go punch in the numbers into the cash register but stopped with a twist of her mouth with her finger poised over the buttons. "Nonono, this won't do."

For a second, Turtle clammored off of her milk crate platform and ducked under the counter. She returned a moment later and promptly plopped the old toy cash register back on the counter. "There we go! Much better. That'll be....~~handwavey total~~ please." She held out her hand for the money.

~~But this way the kids will be hyper but pouty for more candy. Mwahahaha.~~

Jim wondered if he should try to pay with Monopoly money, but he didn't have any on him and he figured Turtle would try to hurt him when everything went back to normal if he cheated her out of real money. "Here you go," he said, paying. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you."

"Thank you! Come again!" Turtle chimed and then giggled, ducking slightly behind the counter for the glare that Apu was giving her.

Someone please tell her that robot dogs don't eat regular dog food. She's going to get Kibbles'n'Bits stuck in Liz's gears from trying to force feed her.
