Ellen was suspicious.

Not only was a good portion of the alcohol now suddenly comprised of juice, milk and water, but the lounge was a ballpit.

On the other hand, she wasn't six years old, so at least there was one good thing so far.

And then there was a blonde blur launching itself at Ellen with great volume and speed. "MOMMA! MOMMA! HI!"

Ellen caught the blur up in a tight embrace, though it was a few more moments before her brain caught up as well. "Jo??"

"HI MOMMA!" Jo yelled happily. "WE PLAYED WITH MR TICK TODAY AND WENT ON THE OBSTACLE COURSE AND HAD PIZZA FOR LUNCH!"

"Sweetie, calm down!" Ellen said, wincing a little at her daughter's lack of volume control and pulling back from the hug to get her ears away from the yelling.

John wandered in, deciding a drink wouldn't be unreasonable tonight. "Ellen," he greeted her. "Do you have any alcohol left or has it changed to chocolate milk in sippy cups again?"

And there was that blur launching itself at people again. "UNCLE JOHN!"

John automatically caught the blur before he quite realised who it was. "Hello Jo," he said when he did.

John did his best not to wince at the volume. "Not at the moment. Though I might have to look into hunting a banshee. Someone seems to be as loud as one."

Ellen turned from watching her blond whirlwind of a daughter and smiled slightly. "There's actual alcohol, for those who aren't under ten," she said dryly. "But I can certainly get you some chocolate milk if you'd like."

She poured his drink and set it down, shaking her head. "Every time, John," she said. "Every time I think I get what this place is about, it turns around and screws with you some more."

Ellen scowled a moment. "I don't condone shooting people, but you don't look any worse for it," she said. "Actually, I think the uniform's an improvement." She kind of regretted saying it as soon as it came out - damn all uniforms for making anyone look good.
