Dixon Hill in The Black Orchid

In a seedy town full of sex and corruption can Dixon Hill uncover the truth behind one of the most shocking crimes of his career? Based on the infamous unsolved murder!

Seely was holding Aravis's hand as they walked up to the theatre, and was totally grinning like a doof. "And here we are," he said.

[The Black Orchid = The Black Dahlia. Dixon Hill = Jean-Luc Picard, kinda. Thread between Aravis and Seely locked to them, but okay for broadcast. Otherwise open. Posted early for great timezone justice!]

Aravis stared at the bag of M&Ms. "What are these?"

Aravis peeked into the bag. "In colors!"

She carefully selected a red one and popped it into her mouth. "...it's wonderful."

"It is the greatest thing I have ever tasted," Aravis said, eyes wide. "Thank you."

She held out the bag. "I feel so deprived -- which would sound very silly if you saw where I grew up. I have so much to learn. Though I have expanded my vocabulary quite a bit!"

And yes, she was hugely proud of that.

Aravis nodded. "I now know that 'emo' means sadness, 'chicks' are women and not just baby birds, 'what's up' is a greeting and not a question, and 'cute' means...well, what I think of you."

M&Ms were fascinating things, really.

"By the definition of the word as I learned it...yes," Aravis said carefully. "Unless it means something insulting and I do not know."

Aravis grinned, her color darkening. "There's a word I do know. Thank you. Though I have no doubt that my friends at home would have fit laughing if they heard that."

"Mostly just stupid," she said, smiling. "Though not in interesting, sickness-earning ways." No, just in saving-Aravis's-life ways, but psh, details.

"About eighteen years, I'd expect," she commented lightly, totally noticing the oh-so-casual maneuver.

She may have shifted a little closer towards him in response. Some things actually did translate without her needing to ask.

"It shows," she said honestly.

Aravis's head may have lightly rested against his shoulder. It was such a strain on her neck to hold up her head all day, of course.

Well, that was very nice, Aravis decided. Which was why she might have nestled her head a little more against his shoulder. Well, that and the sore neck. "You're my expert on stupidity at this school."
