Turtle & Canary; Thursday [ 06/21 ]

Radio always left Turtle feeling a little tired, because she had to do it well past her usual bedtime. That might explain the pillow on the front counter. Turtle was also explaining the pillow to Apu. "I'm not sleeping," she said, "I'm merely testing the merchandise. I don't want to be known as that girl who'll sell you a crappy pillow."

And, for good measure, she threw in an "Yar!"

Especially while Turtle is in class or running around for one reason or anything.

She might be wont to giving glares should anyone other than the pirate be speaking pirate-like.

Charlie came in on her lunch break, with money and a list of stuff she needed. "Hey, Turtle. Or should I be sayin' yarrr?" she asked, unable to resist.

"Yarrrrr," Turtle responded, lifting her head from the pillow with a wry smirk. "Ye best be sayin' that 'cause you enjoyed it an' not to be makin' fun me, wench, else I'll be forced to lock you in the brig."

She shook her head. "I don't even know what a brig is."

"Detention cell, like in that movie," Charlie said, giggling. "And I thought it was great! You only stopped speaking pirate once in the whole broadcast! I would have would have been laughing half way through." She held out her list (sleeping bag, flashlight, cooler, boots, and compass) and said, "Shopping Day!"

"Oh, yeah, that's right!" Once shopping was mentioned, the waterlogged Turtle instantly brightened. "For your camping trip! I had Apu move all the camping stuff up front over there so everyone can find it all easily." She nodded toward the display nearby.

"Cool! Thanks," Charlie put her purse down, then went over to examine the sleeping bags. "I want to make sure I get one that'll last a while. Maybe all through school, I guess they do a lot of field trips."

"Yeah," Turtle agreed. "Plus? Slumber parties! ~~Handwavey brand~~ gets really good market reports, but their colors are kinda blah. On the other hand, you're sleeping in it, not wearing it."

"Slumber parties yay!" Charlie grinned, and pulled ~~Handwavey brand~~ off the shelf. "I need to get the most out of my money, here. I can't write my grandpa for more money when I've got a job to pay for stuff like this. So I'll deal with blah, and just have a really cool pillowcase." She grinned. "Maybe a Strong Guy That Flies one."

Turtle smirked a little. "I'm more partial to Bitterwoman, myself. Price is really good on those, too. Might seem a little high, but they're durable, y'know? Those guys that climb the mountains and risk freezing to death get 'em, I think."

Turtle may have been making that up. She couldn't remember.

"Cool!" Charlie looked gleeful, and said, "Survival over fashion, because survival's always going to be cooler. Okay, let's see... one huge honkin' flashlight." She grabbed a MagLite that looked like one Sculder and Mully used, possibly as a weapon. "Ohh, and batteries." She looked up from her purchases so far, and casually said, "You know. I was thinking of going by the Magic Shop. To see Tannim?"

Turtle gave Charlie a look that seemed to be saying Get out of my brain, you. "Y..yeah, but you can't really get stuff for camping there..."

She floundered and failed at trying to be nonchalant. "I was thinking maybe I might, too. Y'know, just to see how the shop's been doing. We're unofficially cooperative, T & S and the Magic Box, y'know..."

Charlie nodded vehemently. "Yeah! And, well. It's-- halfway through the session! You guys should compare notes. See if there's things to stock up on. Or something." She gave Turtle an unrepentant grin. If Charlie wasn't going to date Tannim, someone cool should, right? Nudging was totally acceptable behavior. "And I need... candles. Yeah."

"All the candles at the Magic Box smell funny, though," Turtle said, frowning a bit, because she wasn't sure if she was saying this to prevent a sale from being made at the Magic Box instead of here, or to prevent Charlie from going to see Tannim. Which didn't make sense. She could so visit him if she wanted; it wasn't like they were dating or anything...

"Not so good for camping," Charlie admitted. "I don't want to attract mosquitoes or other bugs." She looked at the little coolers on a nearby shelf, and asked, "You think I could get a six-pack of water in one of these?" She gave Turtle a mischevious look. "Maybe a charm to protect me in the wilderness?"

Turtle's glare would be a little stronger if she didn't know that Charlie was just trying to get her back for making fun of her about Dean the other day. "Yeah, that should be big enough for a six pack, but, Charlie, you're going on this trip with Mister Deadpool and Miss Aly. They could protect you better than any silly old charm could."

Charlie started laughing at the mental image she'd just gotten. "Sorry, I just tried to think of who would take on both of them at once, and wow. Some kind of really stupid blue-spandex-wearing supervillain loser." She put the cooler down on the counter, and looked at her list, then shot Turtle a sideways look. "Seriously. What would be the harm in saying 'hi' to your fellow store owner?"

Why blue? Turtle couldn't help but wonder.

"I'm not saying there's any harm in," Turtle insisted. "In fact, I said I was thinking about, but I just, you know, don't want to make a big deal about it. And he's not the store owner, that's Mister Giles. Who, actually, I should say hi to. I've never actually met him because I only go there when Tannim works..."

"Right! So, you could drop in. Ask Tannim when Mr. Giles would be there." Charlie grinned, then picked up a pair of boots. "Okay, I'm dropping it. But. It's a thought. An idea. Just putting it out there. To be considered." She frowned at the boots. "Okay, I have no idea what I'm doing here."

"Protecting your feet?" Turtle offered wryly, grinning and shaking her head.

"Why all the push to get me to go talk to him, anyway?" she continued. "I thought we established that boys totally sucked and we don't need 'em."

"We don't," Charlie admitted. "And I haven't heard from Johnny for a while, and... I don't know. It would just be weird to talk to Tannim, I guess. With things between you two up in the air."

Very weird.

Charlie stomped one foot into a boot, and then got up to walk around in it. "I should probably break these in before the weekend, hunh?"

Shifting her weight a bit from one foot to the other, Turtle decided that she wasn't even going to touch that whole up in the air thing. Because it was up in the air, which meant anyone could still grab it. Calling a ball wasn't much good until it was actually in your mitt. Part of her was just a-okay with the ball staying up in the air, too. However, part of her was not a-okay at all with it being in someone else's mitt.

And where was she getting the baseball metaphor, anyway? Weird.

"Yeah," she said, idly, still distracted by relating sports to relationships. "Break 'em in by kicking Johnny."

"If I could find Johnny," Charlie abruptly looked worried, staring at her boots. "I haven't heard from him in over a week, and he wasn't in Art Class. I hope he's okay. Maybe he had to go home to fight a supervillain or something."

"Huh." Turtle's head tilted. "I would say maybe he knows you'll kick him, so he's hiding, but that would indicate he has brains."

Charlie snickered. "Why do guys have to be so pretty? It would be easier to say, oh, no use for guys, forget them, if they didn't kiss well and look really cute with their shirts off." She shook her head. "Brains or not, I hope he's okay." She got up and carefully walked over to the cash register. "This pair, and I think I'm set."

While, in her single experience, Turtle felt she couldn't argue much about the kissing part, she certainly could make defense against the shirtlessness. She snorted as she started scanning the items. The beeping, though, still made her grin a bit. "I'm sure he's fine," she said. "And I'm glad I seem to be immune to the prettiness that you speak of. So what if a guy's pretty? Last thing I need is a boyfriend who's prettier than me..."

"There are a lot of really cute guys on this island," Charlie admitted. "And some of them are way cuter than me too." She was not saying Dean's name. Or Alec's. Same deal. "But, yeah. Somebody smart, and fun to talk to-- that would be better than any cuteness." She wrestled the boots off and put her sandals back on. "But I like looking at them in the meantime!"

"Meh," Turtle, determined to remain on her defiance against the pretty, shrugged, and focused on her scanning. Beep. Beep. Beep.

"Comes to ~~handwavey total~~, Charlie."

Charlie pulled out her wallet and carefully counted out the bills, then added in another few and said, "And a Slushy. You pick the color."

"But we actually have flavors today," Turtle said with a laugh before nudging the SquishyBot to get Charlie a Banana. Her mouth moved slightly as she counted out the money and then sent another grin toward Charlie. "Mister Jackson here," she said, holding up a twenty. "Now there's a guy I can get to like. And see? Not even remotely pretty!"

"A man of substance," Charlie giggled, picking up her purchases, and taking a sip of her Slushy, and turning for the door. "Yum! See you later, Turtle."

"Thanks for stoppin' in, Charlie," Turtle smiled, as she put the money away and closed the cashdrawer with her hip.

Marco came in, mostly to bother Turtle then to actually buy something.

"Hey, Marco," Turtle greeted him with a wry smirk. "Been any good animals lately?"

"Nope, just my good ol' human self." Marco said with a grin. "Sell anything potentially illegal lately?"

"Why would I be selling anything potentially illegal, Marco?" Turtle gave him a look like he was incredibly stupid for even asking.

"If it made a good profit?" Marco asked innocently.

Turtle promptly stuck her tongue out at Marco. "I do have morals when it comes to business, you know. I'm not going into business law for nothing."

Smirking, she leaned in forward. "The trick," she whispered, "is in the fine lines and loopholes. Nothing illegal, but nothing exactly orthodox, either."

Marco nodded. "There you go! I knew you couldn't be happy just being miss rule-abiding."

"It's totally still abiding the rules, though!" Turtle argued. "In fact, it's following the rules more closely than anyone else would even bother. It's following them down to the tiiiiiinist little nano-detail."

"I think they do that in Japan when they want to strike." Marco commented.

Turtle frowned, confused. "Like, with picket signs and stuff?"

I can't stop writing "be" instead of "is"! Ack!
