Caritas, Wednesday, June 27

Jaina was back at the bar tonight, where the zombies were still practicing the first song she'd taught them. It actually didn't sound bad, except the guitarist's finger kept falling off on one certain chord, and that's the story of the first time she ended up duct taping something back to a zombie.

Gabriel had decided he needed to get out more. Specifically, he needed to know more about what the local monkeys were up to. What place could be better to find out than in a bar? He leaned on the counter and ordered a whiskey.

Gabriel pushed the money across the counter. As bartenders where supposed to talk to people, she might have interesting information to share. "I just moved here," he informed her. Monkey smalltalk was really annoying.

"Oh, here and there," Gabriel replied vaguely. "You like this place?" he asked.

"Interesting. Right." Gabriel sipped his drink. "So anything interesting I should know about?"

"Invasions of children?" Gabriel looked horrified. And he quietly wondered if it was a good or a bad thing that he'd missed the meteorite fuzzy monsters. "I see," he added finally. "Not like your home town I take it?"

Mary missed whiskey. And scotch. And vodka, since that had been one of her favorites. She took a sip of her club soda and tried to remember why she quit drinking in the first place.

"Looks like you left the church," she said with a smile.

"Temporarily," Gabriel replied. "Need to get out more." He raised his glass. "And I might send someone by the hotel to pick up that bed soon." As soon as he could get someone to do it.

"Club soda with lime, please."

One day Mary would have to find something more adventurous to order, but for now she was content with club soda.

"No problem. It's the easiest thing to order when you still want to go out but don't want to drink anymore," said Mary. "Besides, I need a cheat sheet to figure out what I'm getting with all those fancy drinks."

"How did you end up working in a bar?" asked Mary, amused.

"You may have lucked out, actually," said Mary, grinning. "When I worked in Las Vegas, there was this millionaire who wanted to work for free at one of the hottest nightclubs. Problem was that he was the lousiest bartender. My friend was the manager and she begged him to find another Vegas fantasy."

"Well, this was at Mystique, the hottest night club in Las Vegas, and he probably wouldn't have gotten pretty girls to speak to him unless they were ordering drinks from him," explained Mary. "It backfired on him, actually. He spilled so many drinks that no one would order from him except me, and he screwed that one up because he couldn't stop staring at my chest."

Mary giggled. "I think a question like that would have totally freaked me out a month ago. Las Vegas is out in the desert between the Rocky Mountains and the west coast. It's called Sin City because what's usually illegal everywhere else is actually welcome there," explained Mary.

"Ummm, no, you probably wouldn't see that in Vegas," said Mary. "There's a lot of things here that wouldn't exactly fit in Las Vegas."

That's when Mary realized she wasn't as homesick for Las Vegas as she was a few weeks ago.

"For starters, you wouldn't get cute fuzzy little alien creatures hatching out of meteorites like they did at the park last Friday," said Mary. "Same with the zombies. First time I saw them, I thought it had to be a really good illusion until I started to smell them."

"Well, yes and no," said Mary, thinking. "It's normal as in you don't have zombies, gremlins, trolls and all that, but it's not normal in that you could get meet someone in line at the buffet, go down to City Hall after dinner, get a marriage license at 2 AM on a Friday night and get married by an Elvis impersonator before sunrise and then get a quickie divorce by Sunday morning."

Not that Mary has done anything like that. She and Danny went to Los Angeles for their almost-wedding.

"You never know what life is going to throw at you," said Mary, looking down at her now-empty glass. "I always knew that I was going to marry Danny McCoy when he came back from the Marines and we were going to have a cute little house with a white picket fence. Instead, I'm celebrating my thirtieth birthday alone in Fandom while Delinda Deline, the biggest party girl in Vegas, is having Danny's baby."

"Nope," insisted Mary. "I've done that before and it didn't help. Besides, I've made my choices and I have to live with them now," she added.

"It certainly does. The thought of leaving behind everyone I knew was terrifying, but I think I've done pretty well here," said Mary.

"Seems you've picked up another important skill for a bartender -- listening to everyone's problems," she added with a chuckle.
