The Graveyard: Thursday Night

Another night and there's Mel in the graveyard on patrol.

Not that there are any vampires in Fandom to slay.

At least real vampires.

"Seriously. Knock it off. You're not funny."

"There's nothing funny about being undead," Jim said. He was dressed all in black. "Except for zombie comedians. Those guys are hysterical."

"Yeah. When the tell a joke they all go to pieces," Mel said rolling her eyes. "And you are not undead. Cut it out."

"You're right, I'm not undead," Jim admitted. "That's an offensive term. I prefer 're-lifed.'"

"You are not a vampire!" Mel yelled. "Cut it out!"

"Um, hello?" said a voice from behind them.

"Am too," Jim said quickly to Mel before turning around. "Hi. Are you a vampire, too?"

"No you're not," Mel said vehemently before turning to the new person. "He's not. Really. Are you?"

Faile blinked at both of them. "What is a vam-pire?" she asked.

"Creatures of the night, like me," Jim said. "We don't have to terrorize people too much and we have a great health care plan, dental included. Want to sign up?"

"VAMPIRES DON'T HAVE HEALTH PLANS!" Mel yelled before turning to the the new girl. "Vampires are demon bloodsuckers. He doesn't know what he's talking about."

Faile? Still had no clue what they were talking about. She looked back and forth between them and surreptitiously reached for one of her knives.

"Is he a Shadowspawn?" she asked in confusion. "Do you need help in killing him?"

"He's not shadowspawn. He's a student," Mel said. "Go ahead and kill him."

"As a student, you'll probably be thrown out of school if not arrested if you kill me," Jim said. "You could try to kill me if you wanted, though. My name's Jim."

Introducing himself would hopefully make her less likely to try.

Faile put her knife away. "Since I would have nowhere at all to go if I got expelled, I think I will not kill you today," she said with a smirk before giving him a small bow in greeting.

"I call myself Faile. It is good to meet you." She looked questioningly at Mel.

"I'm Mel Fray," she said looking a little disappointed. "I take it you're a new student here? Because killing a student who annoys me? Totally ignored. Really."

"She doesn't mean that. She doesn't want to lose an arch-enemy like me so soon," Jim said. "It's nice to meet you, Faile."

Faile smiled more. "It is nice to meet you too. May I walk with you? There were explosions last night. I was told the island was safe, but I wanted to look around anyway."

"That was just some fireworks thing," Mel said waving for her to join them. "I usually patrol once a night just to make sure real vampires or demons don't show up."

"Except for the ones who are already here like me," Jim said.

"Knock it off. You're not a vampire," Mel glared before looking at Faile. "He's not a vampire. Just annoying."

Faile chuckled. "Is he your brother?" she asked Mel. "He acts like a brother."

"No, I'm just an arch-nemesis," Jim said. "Although I did study as a monk about seventy years ago, so I don't object to being called 'brother.'"

Mel groaned and face-palmed. "He's not my arch-nemesis. Or a Brother. Or my borther. Though my arch nemesis is my brother. Just not him. He's just Jim."

Faile sized Jim up before looking back at Mel, still smiling in amusement. "I could probably make a few knife holes in him if you will not tell."

"I'll tell. Vampires are notorious tattle-tales," Jim said.
