The Beach, One-ish
As he stood there on the beach beside a wooden badger taller than him, John felt sorta stupid. He didn't feel stupid because of the badger, but because he was waiting to give the badger to Aly.
Aly his Explodey teacher. Aly who may not even show up to get said present, 'cause other people tended to think it was weird to give presents to their teachers--even birthday ones. And though it had just turned one a few minutes ago, he began to feel a bit paranoid.
"She probably didn't get the message yet," he tried to convince himself, "And even if she doesn't show up, I could always set it off myself. An explosion's an explosion all the same."
His thoughts wandered over the Desmesnes novel he was reading, how much C4 he'd used on the badger, and the fact that it was Friday the 13th. The last part wasn't all that alarming, as he generally had good luck on those days. Which was pretty odd even to him.
