Charlie was sorry to be stuck inside today-- it was way too nice out-- but at least she had the new Barry Plodder to read while she was at work. The kittens frolicked, and U2 and Fiona Apple played on the speakers.

Groovy Tunes was open.

But not about Barry Plodder.

The idea to go and figure out what he'd missed, music-time-wise, might have seemed an excellent one when Jeff first got it, but now that he was actually there he realised he didn't actually know enough about music to sort out the recent from the not-so-recent.

Eventually he picked up three random CD's and wandered up to the counter, where he promptly froze.

There were gorgeous women everywhere on this island. Working in shops, even. He had to remember that.

"Hi! Did you find what you were looking for?" Charlie asked, looking hopeful. "I'm Charlie, by the way."

"You're everywhere!" Jeff blurted. "In shops!" Oi.

Charlie blinked, looked around to see if she'd started multiplying, then gave Jeff a cockeyed look. "I have a twin? In another shop somewhere?" She wrinkled her forehead, realizing that weirder things had happened to her here. "She wasn't evil, was she?"

"No, no," Jeff said, stammering, "I don't mean you specifically, I mean in general, you are all very present. And. In shops. Which is all right, I encourage presence in shops, it brightens up the neighbourhood a bit."

Charlie cocked her head, and grinned, crossing her arms. "Okay, so, uh. Are we talking about humans here? Or something more specific?" She was starting to get the idea, but letting the guy stammer his way out of this could be pretty funny. "I'm glad you approve, though!"

"I'm still not certain if it's seperate species," Jeff said, looking vaguely desperate again, "It's hard to tell apart 'cos I don't know the, er, parts. You know."

Charlie's eyes went huge and round, and she said, "Right! I get that. No, understood. Understandable." She bit her lower lip to keep from snickering in self-consciousness. "Except for the obvious ones?"

"Well, breasts are pretty much... out there, aren't they?" He really needed to learn when to keep his mouth shut, "Especially on television. Television is notorious for breast outing. Not that I make it do that on purpose! It just sort of happens."

"...buh?" Charlie gulped, then nodded her head, wondering if this was one of the crazy people from Orange Shoe Sevenaide that she'd heard about. "You don't have magic powers to do that. Right. So, yeah. No breast outing here!"

"Oh, no!" Jeff said, eyes big, "I'm sure that's just the television broadcasters! I'm not planning to out your breasts. I'm not some kind of..." Okay, that took a moment," ...Pervert."

Charlie was definitely crossing her arms over her chest now, nodding along in agreement. Must not scare the crazy person. He seemed... mostly harmless? "Good to know," she said in determination. "Because I'd have to hurt you. But I get that it just happens on TV sometimes. As long as you're not disappointed that it's not happening here."

He was, sometimes.

"Oh, of course not," Jeff said, "Absolutely no disappointment. Turtle'd be allowed to kick me. I don't go near women when they're allowed to be violent, they might remember later."

"Turtle?" Charlie stared, completely floored. "Wait. Are you Jeff?"

Okay, Turtle had said he was British, she should have thought of that sooner, but... whoa. "I'm her best friend. Here on the island, at least."

"I don't think I'm allowed to speak to you, then," Jeff said, "Although I'm not entirely certain. It all gets a bit confusing."

"You're not allowed to speak to me because I'm friends with Turtle, or because of the thing where I'm allowed to hurt you? Which I don't get, but..." Charlie shook her head, thinking spaz! Turtle is dating the King of the Spazzes! and said, "Do you still want to buy those CD's?"

"Best friends and sisters," Jeff replied automatically, "That's not the bit that's confusing." Now he didn't know whether or not he could actually look in the general vicinity of Charlie's breasts, but the face might be hazardous territory as well. He focused on the back wall instead.

"Er," he stared down at the CD's, "...Are these recent?"

Charlie couldn't help giggling at this point, and said, "Yes, they are. All of them came out in the last three years." She grinned at him, even though he was staring over her shoulder at the poster of Josie and the Pussycats. "We've got their CD too," she said, pointing behind her. "The blonde one, that's Melody. She owns the store."

"Oh," Jeff said. She kind of looked like a woman off the Ten Most Likely To Take Their Clothes Off on Camera List of 1986. Maybe a bit of Britt Ekland, too. Awh, now he couldn't look at her without getting flashes of the full Walkabout. He quickly looked somewhere else. He was running out of things to look at.

"No, no, that's all right, I wouldn't want to, er, walkabout," he stammered, "Or anything. Not quite the time. For stores, and, them being everywhere. That's, that's fine."

"Walkabout? Isn't that an Australian thing?" Charlie asked, ringing up the CD's. "That's ~~handwavey price~~. Are you sure I can't help you find something else?" She grinned a little. She could *kind of* see why Turtle liked him. Kind of. Although hopefully he was a bette conversationalist with Turtle.

"Well, you never know when you'll see the full Walkabout, don't you?" Oh, for heaven's sake. "...I mean, those Australians are fairly unpredictable. You never know when they'll decide to..." Jeff paused, snatching up his CD's and throwing some money on the counter in a nervous fashion, "...Pull it all off, you know?"

"Um?"

Charlie looked at the money, wondering if it was safe to touch. "Okay. I'll tell Turtle you said hi?"

"Okay," Jeff said, and fled the store as fast as humanely possible.

Not backwards, this time. His back was very grateful.

Or dance like no one's watching.

Around today. Haven't read the book. Spoiler-free zone.
