Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 07/23 ]

Playing hide and seek earlier in Potpourri had left Chad in a little bit of a bad mood; it all started out pretty well with the shirt and the no-talking game, but then they had to throw something at him that just played so nicely on some of his worst insecurities. Thankfully, he had work today, because, at work, there were kittens and music to make him feel better.

And, somehow, he'd procured a pie. That helped a lot, too.

Today's music: Mostly Cake and J-Pop and Mariachi stuff.

He's got his guitar with him and is plucking at it. Maybe working on a song or two; not that he'd admit that, because he wasn't very confident in what he was working on.

Some time after class, Jeff stuck his head through the door to scout the area for that girl. Finding Chad instead, he grinned broadly and walked up to the counter. "Chad!" he said, "I didn't know you worked here. There was this woman last time."

"Woman?" Chad tilted his head, ceasing the plucking on his guitar for a minute. "Melody or Charlie? Was she blon...wait. They're both blonde, nevermind. Yeah, I work here. Been working here longer than here has been here, even."

"Excellent," Jeff said, still grinning. "I'm trying to get up to date; has there been anything particularly excellent since 1987?" He paused. "You know," he said, "I've never quite bothered to ask what year it is to begin with."

"2007," Chad supplied, lifting the strap of his guitar over his head to set it aside, "and, yeah, there's been...a lot. A lot a lot. How much time do you have?" With a question like that, Chad was getting the feeling that his little brother had no idea what he was doing by asking Chad to fill him in on music.

Jeff nodded, adding some wattages to the grin. It was getting slightly manic. Well, it wasn't 2050, but it was still the future, wasn't it?

"Oh, it's not like I've got anywhere to be," he said. He'd lost the mobility to go anywhere at any kind of reasonable pace that morning, which was going to put a real cramp on his store-fleeing skills.

And, thus, as it were, with Chad leaning (carefully) forward on the counter and gesturing a little with his hands, Jeff was introduced to one of the very few times when Chad actually talked. And talked he did, leading Jeff in through a long lexicon of musical history in his head to help span the last two decades with not only things he felt were worth the breath, but also important movements that most people might not have even been aware of. He didn't feel bad, though. He'd given Jeff fair warning and it wasn't until he'd finished off with a small thesis regarding the scene rock leaking into the mainstream again and how alt-female-lead bands where where most of the good stuff was coming from these days that he'd even realized he'd been going on, and on, and on, and shoving more names and trends into Jeff's head than could probably ever be retained.

And when he realized that he really, really needed a glass of water now.

Jeff was nodding like a bobblehead. He didn't realise it right then, but one day, the ability to sit through wordy rants was probably going to come in handy on a very regular basis.

"Jacuzzi bubbles," he said, when Chad finally finished, "We've got to figure out a way to bottle them."

Chad blinked. A few times. That was...a rather jarring way for him to come out of his music affectionado mode.

"Uh...." He tried to relate one thing to the other; he failed. "Whut?"

"You've got all these rock stars," Jeff continued, "Some of them female. They spend an awful lot of time sitting around in Jacuzzis, don't they? There's got to be bits of woman -- or man -- hanging about the water, right? If you bottle that and sell it as an alternative mineral water... it's both of humankind's favourites: naked celebrities and water, all in the same packaging!"

Chad gazed over at Jeff for a moment before asking, "You said 1987. That's when you're from?"
