Luke's Diner; Sunday [ 08/05 ]

...Work? What work? A.J. seemed to forget that he had such a task at hand. While he was behind the counter, he was behind it with his sketchbook, which meant that he wasn't paying any attention at all. What? He was having a very creative day and ideas were just flying off of his pencil onto the page and it wasn't like he had been getting...many customers at the moment. And that's what the little bell was for, right? Right. If anyone really wanted to interrupt this generation's DaVinci, that was their prerogative.

Luke's is open.

He may not seem like he'd be happy about being interrupted, but he would be. He just doesn't know it yet.

Jeff tapped the little bell. Bells were sort of like proto-type phones, weren't they?

"D'you have anything I'm not allergic to?" he asked.

A.J.'s head tilted. He finished a curve of a head before answering. His eyes were still on the work, though. "Hope so. What are you allergic to?"

"I don't know," Jeff explained, "My mother phoned, she thinks I should eat better. Keeps warning me about my allergies. The dog's been telling her things."

A.J. arched an eyebrow. "If you don't know, how am I supposed to?"

Jeff paused. "...I probably should've thought about that," he said. "Sorry, I panicked. I was reading my magazines when she phoned."

"Well," frowning slightly, A.J. tossed his sketchbook aside for the moment. "Do you know what you aren't allergic to? We could start there."

"Food," Jeff said, with a shrug.

A.J. looked at the guy for a brief second before grinning. "Well, then, sir, you're in luck! We just so happen to have food here! Lots of it! Plenty of it! You sure came to the right place."

"Could you get me some?" Jeff paused, grinning, "I'm not completely certain if that's 'eating better', but there's eating, that's bound to work, isn't it?"

"Eating something is better than eating nothing in the long run, yes," A.J. agreed with a smirk. "We have deli sandwiches that are pretty good; those aren't bad for you at all."

"Yes! That. I don't care if I'm allergic, really. I'm sort of trying to get away from my mother," Jeff said, still grinning. He was in a totally excellent mood and had been for days, despite the rather unfortunate phone call that morning. "You know, in my head. I seem to be doing all right physically speaking."

"She that bad?" A.J. asked with an arched eyebrow as he reached for the order pad. "And what do you want on that sandwich? Or should we just...surprise you." He was having a feeling this guy wouldn't exactly know what he wanted.

"Oh, you don't know the half of it," Jeff said, managing a nervous chuckle despite the general aura of joy, "The voice alone could probably kill with disappointment. I'm sort of trying to keep her from finding out I've got a girlfriend 'cos otherwise my boys will probably pay the price."

He spent some time mentally going over the sandwich question. "...Have you got something with cheese on it? I'm fairly sure I'm not allergic to cheese. Unless that's the cause for my ears, but I think I'll defer to my mother on that one." She said it was the-- well, let's not go into that right now.

"Secret's safe with me, man," A.J. nodded, and then wrote down cheese. "We have lots with cheese. Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, feta, jack, that kind that smells really, really, really bad...What's the ear thing? I've never heard of cheese allergies messing with the ears before."

"Sometimes I think they're a different colour than the rest of my head," Jeff said. It seemed logical to him. "...I don't know what any of that is besides the cheese bit."

A.J. moved his head to get a look at Jeff's ears. "Well, they look pretty normal right now, so that's good. Just cheese, then? Meats, veggies, condiments?"

"A girl in my class said so, too," Jeff said, "So I imagine they're lying low for the occasion. And I'll have, er... Anything that doesn't kill me."

And then he grinned, because it was getting impossible to control, "You know what's the best thing about having a girlfriend? You've got a license to stare at a woman! And they won't ask you if you've got something in your eye 'cos it's a compliment."

That worked. A.J. wrote down Random sandwich. Lots of cheese. Hold the cyanide. and passed it back to the kitchen boys with a call of "Order!" before they took it and he returned his attention to the customer. And his very interesting assessment. He opened his mouth to say something, closed it, looked thoughtful for a moment, and then tilted his head.

"I don't know if I'd say that's the best thing," he admitted, "but it is a pretty nice perk..."

"I'm even allowed to stare at her naked in my head," Jeff informed A.J., grinning like a complete idiot.

That got a little bit of a stare on A.J.'s part before he laughed a little. "Lucky man."

Billy decided to pop in for lunch today. Yesterday's trip had gone well, and he was already considering his next one.

A.J. was really into the detailing on a tower at the moment and didn't notice Billy at first when he came in.

Billy sat patiently for a moment, then coughed to get AJ's attention.

"There's a bell," A.J. mentioned idly.

Billy looked, and sure enough...

"So there is. Sorry bout that." He rang the bell.

A.J. gave a slight nod. There was a proper order to these sorts of things. He closed up the sketchbook and set it aside. "So what can I get for you?"

"What've you got in the field of ground beef and dairy products?"

"...Together?"

"Yes."

"Cheeseburger?" A.J. offered. "I could put together a steak shake but I don't think it would be very good."

Billy blinked. "I, think I'll go with the cheeseburger." her decided. "Though I find myself morbidly curious about the second option."

A.J. gave Billy a look for a second, wondering if that morbid curiosity got the kid the eyepatch, but, grinning, he just shook his head and said, "Just say no, man. Just say no. Stick with vanilla. Maybe cherry, if you really want to get adventurous."

"I like vanilla." Billy nodded. Geeze, even when he smiled people didn't know when he was kidding. Maybe he should stick with the deadpan.

Or it was just that A.J. had friends like Mark. With Mark, smiling meant serious. Dead serious.

"Bacon on the cheeseburger? Double bacon heart attack special, maybe?"

"Hmm, yes to the first, no to the second."

Also a very acceptable solution.
