Fandom Post Office, Tuesday, 8/7

Annette hadn't really wanted to call in today and not come to work, so she was very thankful that stupid spell ended yesterday. She was just incredibly sore from all those jerky movements. She rubbed warming muscle cream into her legs and arms and smelled like a walking peppermint stick, but that hardly mattered for the sake of comfort.

She was behind the counter. Not moving. Just standing there staring forward. She might be daydreaming, who knows.

The bell was out with a note that read: I'm standing here staring at you - ring it more than once I can't promise what will happen to you.

The Post Office is open.

Andrew walked into the post office looking glum. He had two letters. One was addressed to a Tucker Wells the other to a Jonathan Levinson.

"Yeah," he lied. "I just wanted to send out these letters." He placed them on the counter.

"I tried calling them, but Jonathan's mom won't let him talk to me anymore and I'm pretty sure my aunt finally go caller ID. She never picks up the phone."

"Oh, yeah," Andrew brightened a bit. "Jonathan is great. He's older than I am, but we would get together and play D&D and talk about magic and stuff. I could be myself around him. I didn't get to do that much back home."

He frowned, "I, um, I didn't have any stamps."

"No, nothing is wrong with home. I mean, the kids there just weren't as nice as the kids here sometimes... most of the time." And that was the rub.

"Annette," Andrew was looking at his feet, "What do you think of the Headmistress?" His voice caught a little. Oh the guilt.

There was a sudden flare up of anger inside Andrew when he heard that Umbridge had punished Annette. That was followed immediately by an almost overwhelming wave of guilt and shame.

Andrew's head was almost completely bowed, "No, she didn't hurt me, but umm..." He didn't want to say anything. He didn't want Annette to know what he had done. "Why did she punish you?"

Andrew covered his face with his hands.

At Annette's touch, Andrew seemed to snap out of his funk. He looked up and smiled, but the smile didn't extend to his eyes like normal. In fact, his eyes seemed to be particularly moist.

He took a deep breath, "I'm sorry she did that to you. That's, um, that's horrible. She's a horrible person. I'm fine, thank you. Just a bit of an allergic reaction to the, um... the humidity."

No one needs to know, he thought to himself.

Annette's concern was touching and it built upon the whirling emotions of anger, regret, and shame he was experiencing. He hugged her back, tightly.

"Nothing is wrong," he mumbled, "I, um, I just didn't realize what a horrible and spineless person I Umbridge was until today."

"No! I, um, I didn't see her." He fell so easily into lying.

Andrew moved away from Annette. "Really, she didn't do anything -- well, not to me. I just don't like to think what she might do -- and has done," he gave Annette a very pitiful look, "to my friends."

Andrew looked up, "We're doing something to get back at her?" He clung to that. "Can I help? What's the plan?"

He paused.

"I can do things." The last statement came out with a little more force and a little darker than he probably should have allowed.

Andrew thought of the demons he knew how to summon and the ones he felt fairly sure he could control. He thought about the hellhounds, but he wasn't sure he could keep them from eating a stray student.

He snapped his fingers. They would be perfect.

"How do you feel about flying monkeys?" There was a gleam in his eye.

"Um, no. Well, maybe." He might be able to conjure a lot of them, but having never done it before, he couldn't be certain.

"Look, Annette, thanks for taking care of my letters. I need to run." There were books to be consulted. He started to move away, but stopped, "Is there some, um, secrete meeting or anything planned?"

"Thanks," he said again, "for everything." He ran out of the store.
