Groovy Tunes, Thursday

When Charlie got in to work that morning, the doors to the shop were locked, but it wasn't empty.

Nine gremlins were holding onto a ladder and turning it around and around, and a tenth was holding onto a light bulb in the ceiling fan with all his might. When the light bulb finally came loose, the gremlin ate it.

Then they scampered out the door, the last one handing Charlie a fish on his way out.

"Hunh."

Jeff came into the shop.

He was running.

At this point, considering his track record, mentioning this was really just narrative padding.

"Have you heard anything?!"

"Nothing," Charlie admitted, giving Jeff a concerned look. "You haven't either, hunh?"

Which wasn't at all the kind of thing that would calm Jeff down, probably.

"Perhaps she's really been eaten," Jeff stammered, "Have there been earlier cases? I knew I should've hidden her in the box castle, nothing good could've come of this parents-visiting business."

"Turtle likes her parents." Charlie paused. "Okay, she really likes her dad. Who sounds pretty cool. And I've heard people have disappeared before, but they usually said it was a locker that did it, not a closet or anything else."

"But what if they've gone wrong?" Jeff argued, "It happens all the time in the movies. They get caught by space monsters and in the end they've got to be killed with shovels."

"Shovels?" Charlie asked, because this was new.

"In the Snatching Zombies!" Jeff said, "There's all these people and they end up photocopied by aliens and by the end of it the hero is the only one left and all he's got is this shovel!"

"Ohhhh! Got it." Charlie indulged herself in a tiny Heroic-Dean-with-shovel fantasy for a moment, then snapped out of it. "I'm sure she's fine?" Before Fandom, that would've sounded a lot more definite. "I'm sure! Really! I just wish she'd returned my phone calls...."

"So he kills them by--"

Jeff snapped out of it. Movies had a tendency to do that to him.

"I think my phone is angry with me," he said, staring at the wall behind Charlie, "It keeps making this beeping noise."

Charlie stared at him. Remembering the mix-up with the closets, she cautiously said, "And hasn't just been left on?"

"...They have an off?" Jeff asked, tilting his head, "Why didn't any one tell me?"

Ba-dump-BUMP!

Charlie looked around for the invisible drum set, then shook her head. The urge to mess with Jeff's head was getting kind of intense, but she stuck to, "We thought you read the manual? Maybe?"

Honestly, you didn't have to mess with his head, he did it all for you. "She just gave it to me!" Jeff flailed. "If I knew there was an off switch I never would've gone in the sewer!"

[ tiiired, pick up tomorrow? ]

Charlie nodded patiently. Kind of like she did in her Stupid People class. The comparison fell through when she had to say, "You went into the sewer with a phone?"

[np! see you then!]

"My phone went first," Jeff explained, "Then I sort of had to follow. In my first week. The starfish was really nice to me about it."

Charlie stared at him, and slowly nodded. She was sure that someone, somewhere, could make perfect sense out of this. Possibly that someone was Turtle. Although she seemed to spaz out when faced with some of Jeff's ideas, so.... Mostly, Jeff made her head hurt.

"Turtle is Turtle, and she will be okay, phones or no phones. Can you really see her staying in any closet someone tried to put her in?"

"She said her parents keep her in one when she's over," Jeff explained, sounding nothing if not glum. "It's unethical is what it is."

"Her dad would never do that, he lets her put bourbon on her toothaches," Charlie said, remaining positive. "And. And! They were going to dress her in something horrible for the wedding. So she has to be out in public for that, right?" She looked thoughtful. "Maybe she blew up the wedding."

"I did tell her to be evil," Jeff said, thoughtfully, "Perhaps she took it a bit literally."

"Ooooo." Charlie had total faith in Turtle's ability to be ruthless; which wasn't the same as evil. And yet. Turtle still hadn't called back, after there was shrieking and shouting and talk of closets. "She *really* doesn't like the guy her sister's marrying. Maybe she did something to him!"

That was a possibility he hadn't quite considered yet. Jeff continued to stare at the wall behind Charlie (still not allowed to look at her! it was in the boyfriend code!), thinking.

"...I hope it wasn't too evil," he finally said, when the information had integrated with his personal canon of events, "More sort of a lukewarm evil. I wouldn't want there to be any, er, burns or anything. I'm not entirely certain first aid covers that."

Charlie sometimes wondered if part of Jeff's problem was smoking something recreational, the way he was always zoning on the horizon. By now, she had also just about convinced herself that Turtle had turned terrorist and kicked butt and taken names and then taken off. "I just hope we hear about it soon. I don't remember where in Wisconsin the marriage was taking place, so I can't even call to find out." She blinked, then shook her head.

Jeeeez, okay, maybe she needed to take a step back here... "Or maybe she's just busy?"

Jeff had tried 'smoking something recreational' once. He didn't like to talk about it.

He shot an agonized look some two inches off Charlie's face and began to walk backwards. "She would've phoned," he said, "She phoned every other day till then."

"Ohhhh." Yeah, that terrorist scenario was looking more likely by the moment. "Okay, if she calls me, I'll-- leave a note on your door," Charlie promised. "Promise you'll do the same?"

"Okay," Jeff said, meekly. Then fled. Backwards, as you do.

Charlie leaned over the counter to make sure he didn't trip over anything on the way out, then shook her head, wondering how he *did* that.

They're playing hide-the-fish, even though Charlie tried to get it away from them.

There were other kitties to play with! Mary Kitty was happy. She needed to come back to think store more often.

Charlie caught sight of a new kitten playing with Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, and grinned. She'd have to tell Chad about the newcomer, in case he wanted to bring Oscar Pedro IV in to meet her.
