The Beach, 4:30 a.m. till late morning

Isabel had been tempted to just turn off the alarm when it went off at 4:00 OMGit'sfreakingearly a.m. But the lure of a lunar eclipse was a powerful draw and Isabel slowly made her way down to the beach to watch the show.

In some ways, watching the stars was difficult. Isabel couldn't help but think of Max and Michael, somewhere, out there where she couldn't look out for them. Sitting alone on the beach, it was hard to keep up the cheerful façade she'd been maintaining since she came back to Fandom. With no reason to hide, Isabel cried for everything that had been lost.

Eventually, her tears stopped and Isabel fell back on her blanket, watching as the darkened moon faded from view as the eastern sky grew brighter. Even after a year and a half, sunrises over the ocean were still something special, so she stayed, watching as the sun rose into the sky.

With no classes, there was no better way to spend a morning then sitting on the beach watching the waves.

She wasn't going swimming today, but her long morning walk still took her down to the beach. River always woke early. When she noticed Isabel she approached quietly, until she was standing next to her, barefoot in the sand. "It won't pull you away unless you step into it," she said.

"Maybe later. Right now it's just nice to watch," Isabel said, smiling up at her. "Hi River."

River smiled back and sat down next to Isabel. "It is. Regularity and chaos coexist." She dug an apple out of her pocket and offered it to Isabel.

Isabel took the apple and polished it against her shirt. "Thanks. I was going to go into town for coffee and a bagel in a bit. This will keep me from wasting away till then."

"It's so big. Sometimes it helps to put things into perspective."

River nodded in agreement. "Yet tiny in volume compared to space and time," she replied.

"Yeah. It is pretty big out there," she said, remembering once again how far away Max and Michael were. But those were thoughts for late at night in dark so Isabel pushed them away. "How are you doing River? Enjoying the week off?"

Noticing the subject Isabel preferred to avoid, River thought it wise too to change the subject. "Prefer to keep busy." She smiled a little. "Waiting for classes to start."

"And the new people to invade," Isabel said, taking a bite of the apple. "Today I plan on being lazy. Tomorrow I'll see about keeping busy."

"Yes." River grinned. She dug another apple out of her other pocket and took a bit of it herself. "Teach them about Fandom." She looked amused.

"That's always the fun part," she agreed, laughing a bit. "I'm always amazed at how well they adapt. Nobody's ever run screaming from the island yet."

River suddenly looked serious. "We could try," she said.

Isabel stared for a moment. "Oh that's wicked and evil. I kind of like it. Although I don't know. Sometimes it's nice to coax them in with things like Shirtless Fridays."

River chuckled. "Nicer and not less amusing. But perhaps we need new traditions?"

Robin came down later that morning with his weetiny surfboard, and towel and sunblock to practice his surfing.

"Hi Robin," Isabel said, still amused by the whole concept of frog as student.

"Hi Izzy!" Robin waved. "Great weather for the beach isn't it."

"It is. I figure I'll take advantage of it before classes start," she agreed.

Robin nodded. "Plus it's not gonna stay this warm forever."

"No, it won't," Isabel said, digging her fingers into the sand. "Sooner then you think it'll start getting cooler."

"I'm not real used to cold weather. I have a parka somewhere, but I spend most of my time in Florida or Southern California."

"No worries about the cold there."

"Does it not get cold here?"

"It'll get cold here, no doubt about that," Isabel told him. "Especially if the snow monsters come back."

"...Snow monsters?"

[izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com]

"A couple weeks after I came here," she explained. "A blizzard rolled in and buried the school in a few feet of snow, then the snow monsters attacked. I slept through it all unfortunately, but I here it was one hell of a fight."
