Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 08/28 ]

The front counter was a little more cluttered than usual; Turtle, you see, had out a good pile of some of her law books in one spot, with her dog-eared legal pad in front of her. She'd look thoughtfully at the pad of paper, chewing on the end of her pen for a bit before she'd run a finger along the spines of the books until she found just the one she wanted, pulled it out, opened it up, found what she wanted or what she knew would inspire her, and then went back to writing. Sometimes, she muttered a jumbled string of legal jargon as she wrote it down, reread it, and then nodded in satisfaction before continuing with a please grin.

Man, she loved contracts. Especially when it was a contract for something particularly nice like this.

Today's Squishy flavors: Red Tape, Red Herring, Red.

Always good to catch her in a good mood like this.

During the afternoon, a large dog appeared near the shop. She was panting, but would've probably run straight on if she hadn't caught a whiff of a familiar smell.

So she came to a screeching halt and loitered in the doorway for a moment, staring.

Turtle, distracted by her work and a little buried under the legal books anways, wouldn't have even noticed if it weren't for the tinny bark of Liz the Robot Security Dog. "What is it, girl?" Turtle asked, barely managing to pull herself away. "Is it Marco? Are you going to bite him in the bu--"

She looked. And frowned. "Nana?"

Blink. "No coming in here! If you eat any of our clothes, there will be a bill, and considering that you probably have no legal tender, you'll be working it off, missy." She shook her pen at the dog in warning.

Nana just gave Turtle a big dog grin and a tail wag from where she was standing. Then she glanced over her own shoulder, her tail fell right back down her back legs, and she sprinted away like a thing possessed.

Two seconds later, an even larger animal followed, whinnying happily, his hooves clicking against the ground as he chased after her.

In front of the counter, Liz let out another robotic bark, her little spring tail wagging excitedly and looking up at Turtle with lightbulb eyes as hopeful as lightbulb eyes could be.

"No way, Jose," Turtle said. "You're on the clock."

Gears drooping, Liz went to sulk over by the SquishyBot.

Haku walked into the general store, wanting to get some food that reminded him of home. It was just a matter of if they had it.

Of course they had it! They were Turtle & Canary!

Turtle, however, hadn't noticed Haku for the time being. She was frowning a little at the legal pad in front of her and muttering something about clauses, proximity, and no touchies.

Which might not exactly be a legal term, that last one. Not yet.

Haku browsed through the store, looking for the ingredients he needed to make the bentos he wanted. It was difficutl though, the packaging was all so different.

He walked up to the counter, trying to wait for a moment when the girl there didn't seem as busy. "Excuse me?"

Turtle looked up as though surprised someone was there. She blinked at Haku a few times, getting her head cleared of law terms.

Oh! Customer! Right! A winning smile instantly showed up. "Hello! How can I help you?"

She promptly closed her law book with a noticable smack of the pages, as if that proved how serious she was about earning this person's business.

Haku smiled in return. "Ahh yes, do you have any Konbu, bonito flakes, cooking sake and miso paste? I was looking around, but I didn't see any off hand."

"Uh..." Turtle blinked at Haku, and then shook her head. "Of course we do! It's Turtle & Canary; we have everything! You're just not looking hard enough. You should ask Apu. Those sound like the kinds of things he might know where they are."

"Ahh, thank you," Haku nodded and looked thoughtful. "Do you have instand Miso soup by any chance if this Apu doens't have them?"

Even if it did taste better made from scratch.

"I'm pretty sure we do," Turtle said with a nod. "Over in...well, the food section somewhere. I know I've seen it on our inventory sheets somewhere!"

Haku glanced over there and smiled brightly. "Thank you, I'll go take a look."

"Good luck!" Turtle called out brightly.

....contracts.

WTF?

I just...

I don't know.

Because it's Jeff?

In Jeff's defense...it was Turtle's idea.

Ah, but he suggested it. Which according to his own rules is evil.
