Chilly Boulder Ice Creamery: Friday late afternoon

Karal was sitting at a table near the window, fiddling with a straw in its paper wrapper while he waited for Jaina.

The very nice girl behind the counter had offered him some samples to try while he waited, but he felt like it would be rude. Especially since he was the one who was early.

[ooc: Karal is here to meet Jaina, but it is open for all your ice cream and frozen rock needs.]

Jaina got there about on time, both surprised and not to see him there early. She headed over to the table and asked, "I didn't keep you waiting, did I?"

"Jaina, hello." He hopped up, shaking his head, and smiled. "No, you didn't. I came straight from the library, so I was here early."

"Oh, good," she said, relieved. "Please tell me you weren't studying the first week. Even I know there has to be a rule against that."

"Well, I was at the library as I have a job there now, every Friday. But I was studying," he admitted, looking sheepish. "Not for class!" As if that would make it better. "I am happy that classes are back, though."

"You survived and you're happy about classes," she noted. "That bodes well."

"I hope so," he replied with another smile. "There is one class I am not sure about, but the other two are very good. Did you enjoy yours?"

"I can't complain about any of them," she said, definitely pleased with that. "Ethics should be interesting, definitely. "Which class aren't you sure about?"

"The Love Smart one." Blushing, just a little, he gestured at the counter. "Would you like to order now?"

"Sure, if you're ready," she said, heading to the counter to check over the menu one more time. "You sounded like you knew that one was going to be rough, though."

Karal sighed and hung his head. "The teacher has named me Al. Which at least is better than Carol. And I suspect it is going to get extremely personal," he said, following her and peering at the array of ice cream. He glanced sideways and gave her a small smile. "I suppose it was a little bit funny, in an embarrassing sort of way."

"Don't let it embarrass you, or he might do it more," Jaina advised, pausing to order some of the mint chocolate chip. It sounded good. "If it's the professor I seem to remember it being, I'd dare you to give him a nickname back." That last part was said with a teasing smile.

Karal blinked, then grinned. "Do you think that would work?" he asked, ordering some of the same. "His name is Stinson. Is that the same one?"

"That's the one," she said. "I've never met him myself, but he was the one who taught the class that had two guys in suits trying to pick me up in Caritas for an assignment. I don't have the best opinion of him, no."

Karal frankly stared. "...as an assignment?"

"Yeah," she said. "I didn't want to ask too many questions. Call it cowardice, or maybe self-preservation."

"That was probably wise," he said, still boggling over the concept. "I will consider a nick name." He smiled his thanks as their ice cream arrived. "I have never given one to someone before. Are there rules to be followed?"

"Shortened versions of their actual names are good. Or you can always pick apart a trait of theirs," she said. "Wow, I'm a bad influence sometimes."

"He thinks very highly of himself," Karal said thoughtfully, turning over the possibilities. "And you are not a bad influence, you are simply helping me fit into this world better. Or that is what I will tell anyone who asks."

"Remember that you are taking the word of someone who's been here about as long as you have," Jaina said, but she was grinning as she started back to the table with her ice cream.

Karal followed. "Does that mean I shouldn't listen? I was starting to enjoy the idea of a nick name," he said wistfully.

"No, but you have the disclaimer now," Jaina grinned. "Is there anything you just want to call him when you look at him?"

He blushed as he sat down, suddenly very occupied with prodding his ice cream with a spoon. "Nothing I would repeat out loud."

Jaina giggled. "I knew those sort of thoughts had to be in there somewhere," she said. "Can you make one of them repeatable?"

He glanced up from his ice cream. "Sinson?" he offered. "Except I think he would like that one!"

"You're probably right," she said. "But that was good!"

She pondered a couple possibilities for a moment. "I think he has a difficult name on purpose."
