Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 09/18 ]

There were a few differences around the store today, as Turtle gave in for one of her days. They were subtle differences, but, really, if you paid attention, you might be able to spot them.

No, it had nothing to do with that guy in the knit hat and red-and-white striped sweater trying to blend in with the bags of peppermints. Turtle hadn't even been aware that he was there.

Today's Squishy flavors: *New* Red, White, Wintergreen.

Turtle & Canary is open.

One would be the GIANT poster behind the counter, with all the glitter and stars that announced Wexler for Sophomore Class Representative! Tried and True!

Jamie was once again looking forlornly at the Squishy machine.

"Turtle? Where for art my Grape Judas?"

Turtle rolled her eyes. "Patience is a virtue, Madrox," she said. "I'm having issues with the distributors, and the Grape Judas is not exactly the foremost one."

Jamie sighed dramatically. "Well Gosh! For someone who is running for office I expected more."

And yes then Jamie literally "tsk"ed at her.

Turtle's eyes widened.

"You're not even a sophomore! You can't even vote for me and this is not a school related issue!"

"I am a sophomore. I was a freshman last year. Was even on the student council, " Jamie said. "And how can I vote for someone to take care of me at school if I can't be taken care of as a paying customer?"

Turtle eyed Jamie a little skeptically; for some reason, she was thinking he'd be in a higher class. "There are outside factors here beyond my control, Jamie," Turtle assured him with a deep intake of breath. "I'm working on the Grape Judas, I am, really, but we have to get the Red situation figured out first. Everyone hates the new Red; you are the only one asking for Grape Judas. In this case, as in with democracy, sometimes the needs of the many must be put ahead of the needs of the individual."

She breathed out again, feeling the crisis nicely averted.

"Well I can be the many as well," Jamie countered by stamping his foot several times and creating duplicates galore.

Turtle sighed, slumping on the counter and trying to look completely unimpressed by the fact that he could do that. "That isn't the point, Jamie," she argued. "They're still all you. It isn't very fair for you to get special Squishy flavor privileges above the other people merely because you have a special talent."

"First you say that I'm one and then you say that a group I don't count," Jamie said with that "tsk"ing sound again. "It's this kind of flip-flopping that going to discredit your campaign.

Turtle rubbed her forehead in frustration. "That's not at all what I'm saying, Jamie, and you know that!"

"Do you have a headache?" Jamie asked looking concerned. "You know what fixes my headaches? Grape Judas."

"I'm working on it, Jamie!" Turtle insisted. "Really. As soon as the Red thing gets dealt with, it's next on the list of objectives."

"All right," Jamie said with a sigh. "How soon will that be?"

"I really wish I knew," Turtle said, with a whine that indicated that she really, really did. "I sent something out to them yesterday, so, assuming Annette didn't mess it up just to spite me, I should hear back from them soon. Check in again next week, maybe?"

Jamie thought about this problem for a moment or two.

"How about this... What if I were to take care of this 'New Red' problem for you?"

And now it was Turtle's turn to look thoughtful, before settling down with a suspicious look in her eyes. Suspicious, but eager. "What do you propose for a solution, Mister Madrox?"

Jamie blew a sharp whistle and all his duplicates who had been wandering around the store looked up.

"Get in line boys. We have a mission," Jamie ordered.

As the dupes got in line Jamie hit his hand on the counter about a dozen more times.

He then grinned at Turtle.

"I'll have about two dozen New Red Squishies in the largest cup size you have."

Once Turtle realized what all the Jamies were doing, she snorted a small laugh. "That still isn't going to stop the distributors from sending the bad stuff," she told them, and then drew in a reluctant breath, "but it might speed things up a bit and if I give them a call tonight, maybe, just maybe, it could speed up a few new flavors, too."

She grinned over at the SquishyBot. "You heard the gentleman." And it started getting to work.

"I'm afraid to know what you're all going to be doing with all of this. You certainly aren't going to want to drink it."

"Well for your next order of Red, just replace it with Grape Judas," Jamie said taking a sip of his squishy.

And making a face.

And then another sip.

And making a face.

And for some reasons all the other duplicates were doing the same thing.

"We'll be back tomorrow to deplete your stock."

But that would mean cancelling out Red all together. Turtle's eyes widened. You couldn't do that! Red was a tradition!

She'd have to think about this. Carefully. She gave Jamie and Jamie and Jamie and so on a nod. "I'll leave Bart a note warning him. Thanks for the efforts, guys."

Marco sneakily snuck into the store, trying to stay out of sight.

And when had Turtle ever noticed him when she did that? You'd think the bell over the door would be a good indication, but there was paperwork, you see....

Marco continued sneaking until he was right behind Turtle. "Boo!"

"Ah!" Turtle's heart leapt into her throat and she jumped, whipping around with her leg prepped for a kick.

"Marco!" she shouted and then her eyes narrowed accusingly. "I should have known."

Marco beamed. "Turtle! Who else would come in and try to liven up your otherwise boring day?"

"Did you miss Apu over there in the banana suit?" Turtle asked him, shaking her head. "I wouldn't exactly say my day's been boring."

"I figured there was a good explanation for it." Marco said. "Banana sale maybe?"

"New partnership, actually," Turtle said with a grin. "We're providing the bananas for that new Bluth's Original Frozen Banana stand over by the docks; in turn, I'm helping George Michael advertise a bit. The more bananas he sells, the more bananas he buys from me, after all. So, in other words, you should get one, Marco. I bet a frozen banana would really hit the spot right now, yeah?"

Marco starred at Turtle. "Bananas are supposed to be soft. Frozen things are not supposed to be soft. The two shall never meet."

"But you don't want your banana to be too soft," Turtle said with a slight tilt of her head. "And you haven't tried one of them yet, Marco. You should at least try one first."

Marco considered this for a minute. "I like my banana the way it is." He totally didn't leer, really. "What do I get if I try one?"

"A wonderful and unexpected taste sensation not to be rivaled?" Turtle offered with not exactly her strongest salesman grin ever. "As well as the knowledge that you're supporting local commerce and..." She looked around a bit for those squirrels (not that it mattered because ~~radio was already up~~ she was reporting tonight) before leaning in and whispering "...you might really, really be helping me out in some future networking plans by making George Michael think that I'm actually helping with his business here."

Marco did an exaggerated sigh. "Oh the things I do in the name of friendship."

Turtle turned his exaggerated sigh right back to him. "I know. But at least it's not as bad as making you be my sidekick, right? But that does remind me of another favor I have to ask, Marco."

The winning salesman smile was much, much better this time.

Marco looked suspicious. "Uh huh?"

Turtle pointed to the campaign poster behind her. "You should vote for me, Marco."

Marco grinned. "Who else would I vote for?"

Okay, yes. That was a little bit of a happy bounce. "Yay!" Turtle beamed. "Thank you, Marco! I knew I could count on you."

The other might have something to do with Apu in a banana suit. Maybe.

I just woke up and I haven't had any coffee. Those are the only excuses I have.

Hahaha! Could be worse. This morning I found that the dimwit who closed my store last night took in a $300 check that was post-dated for the 19th.
