Luke's Diner; Wednesday [ 10/17 ]

Everyone was entitled to a bad day, right? Well, today, A.J. just wasn't feeling it and was a little mopey behind the counter, most just nursing cup after cup of coffee and stared a little at the wall, thinking it could use some new paint. The specials were a good indication of his mood:

Today's Specials
Some fish thing
Something healthy-ish with brocolli
Coffee, black

He sighed. It wasn't like he wanted to feel this way, but...ugh. Dammit, his roommate was a freaking idiot.

Luke's is mopey open.

She really had intended to exercise some self-control and stick to the post office today, but Beauty found herself walking through the door of Luke's during her lunch break anyway.

So much for self-control.

Noticing the glum expression on A.J.'s face, she halted hesitantly near the counter, and then put on a brave face and a little smile. "Hi."

A.J. blinked a little in surprise to see Beauty come in today, but it made his small smile back a little easier, ducking his head a bit. Well, saved him the trouble of going over to the post office today with an apology shake. Which of course didn't mean she still wasn't going to get one. He grabbed a cup.

"Hey," he said quietly back and looked over at her without lifting his head much, but lifting, instead, the cup. "Surprise as usual?"

Beauty hated that there was this kind of awkwardness between them now, but she nodded in reply, and came the rest of the way to the counter.

"Please, I like your surprises. And I think something to eat today, too. I didn't bring anything with me to work."

Awkwardness between himself and Beauty was like a tight vice on his chest, and the sad smile A.J. gave her in return only seemed to tighten it. "Poor planning, there," he tried to loosen it with a bit of humor, and then speculation settled in that, hey, maybe she didn't bring lunch so she'd have an excuse to stop by? And then he just told himself that he was being an idiot, because, yeah, right, like that was going to happen after yesterday... "We've, uh, got some fish thing today that they kitchen boys tell me is real good. So that means I'd go with something else."

Things were very much out of sorts, and it was hard to suppress an urge to go around the counter and hug him, just to try and put everything back the way it should be.

"I like fish," Beauty agreed quickly, before A.J. finished out the rest of his recommendation, and then she couldn't help but smile a little. "But if you think something else would be better, I'll take your advice."

She felt a hankering for food like she had at home, and leaned her elbows on the counter and rested her chin in her hands. "They wouldn't possibly be willing to make fried potatoes and onions, would they?" she asked a little wistfully.

"Uh, that's wouldn't just be, like...frying some potatoes with onions, would it?" A.J. asked with a bit of a wry smile back. "'Cause, yeah, I think they could definitely manage that. Hell, I could probably even manage that, but...uh, I won't. Just to be on the safe side."

The street outside Luke's had two men in a canoe, rowing merrily and wearing heavy fur coats.

A.J.'s head tilted a little at what he saw through the window. And, yes, while he told himself that he just shouldn't rationalize things around here anymore, he couldn't help but wonder.

Ino wandered into Luke's looking pleased with herself, and smiled at A.J. She glanced back over her shoulder at the door and said, "Are you coming in?"

This might be an interesting meeting.

Kabuto stepped into the diner behind her, smirking slightly. "I didn't come with you this far to not come in. Besides, you promised me a green tea milkshake."

Actually, it wouldn't be terribly unusual for him to come that far and then ditch her. He'd done stranger things for his own entertainment.

The flat look she gave him said loud and clear that Ino was dubious as to that claim. "Sure you wouldn't, just like how the spar turned out." She brightened though, because the milkshakes here were good.

"Hi A.J! How are you?" Ino said brightly, then gestured to Kabuto, "This is Kabuto, I told you about him remember?"

A.J., not terribly unlike the puppy he was on random occasion, had perked up a little bit at the word milkshake, giving Ino a slight grin as she came in with some guy. Silver hair, glasses. He was going to take a long shot and take it that this was that Kabuto guy she was talking about.

And then it was promptly verified a moment later. "Hey, Ino. I'm good, and, uh, yeah, I remember. Nice to meet you, Kabuto." He gave the other guy a nod. "What's up, you two?"

"Oh just out and about," Ino said vaguely, mouthing the word 'date' at A.J. with a wink, "I was telling Kabuto about the milkshake you made me and he seemed interested so..." She grinned at him.

Kabuto didn't miss the mouthed word, but only rolled his eyes. "She had only good things to say, so I wanted to find out what she was talking about." He smiled politely. "It's nice to meet you, A.J."
