So it wasn't as though he needed cheering up, per se.

On the other hand - time spent with a nice, cute, blonde.

Twist his arm.

Peter waited outside the restaurant for his date.

"Where are your friends?" Peter asked.

"Home in Riverdale," Melody pouted. "Val went back to college and Josie's making a folk record with Alan M. That's her boyfriend."

"Must be kinda lonely for you?" Peter guessed.

"A little. But town is always interesting," Melody said. "Like, a few days ago I saw this groovy Partridge Fanmily cover band. Do you like Partridge family?"

"Haven't heard too much of them," Peter admitted. "Bit before my time."

Melody narrowed her eyes. "How old are you?" she asked. "I'm almost 22. Capricorn."

"Not yet 22," Peter said, bravely keeping on top of his oh shit moment.

"Me either!" Melody exclaimed, as if she hadn't just said that and it was a great coincidence. "But it'll be cool to have an age that's a palindrome."

"Imagine the lucky person who makes it to 123," Peter pointed out.

"If I did that I would just never get any older," Melody said, rapt. "I'd have too much fun saying how old I was."

"Be way more fun than people who lie and say they're 29 all the time," Peter said.

Melody giggled. "Maybe I could pass for 123 now," she said. "I look young because I'm young at heart."

"Age is nothing but a number?" Peter said.

"Mmm-hmm," Melody agreed emphatically.

And drummed a little rhythm of the rim of her water glass with her chopsticks.

"Been a drummer long?" Peter asked.

"About five, six years," Melody said. "What about you, do you play music at all?"

"Depends on who I'm standing next to?" Peter said, teasing.

"Point," Melody allowed, summoning the waiter to order. "So if you stood next to the fish tank, would you be able to swim underwater? Because that would rock."

"It would," Peter agreed. "But it looks like I don't copy - being, I guess? Like one of my cabinmates was a turtle and I never turned into that."

"You'd look silly with a shell," Melody decided.

And then she was back over at the fishtank, watching a snail creep up the back wall. "You can do it, snail!" she encouraged.

Peter smiled to himself. She was a nice g - uh, person, but he had a feeling they were going to stay strictly friends.
