Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 11/06 ]

Getting up for class and lunch had been a start, and now Turtle was even there for work, although she was still looking mildly like death. She hadn't cried since Sunday, at least, but her eyes were still a little rimmed with red. The sound of the bell on the door had her so jumpy she thought that a heart attack would probably kill her before anyone else would have a chance, and she was practically pouring over Liz's instruction manual to see about buffering her effectiveness. There might have also been research regarding SquishyBot's lasers. And she'd dragged out her insurance policies, making a note to give the company a call about a few items.

She'll try very hard not to just throw things at anyone who walks through the door.

"Hey Wexler!" Jamie said cheerfully as he came into the shop. "Where can I find sponges, chamois cloths and car wax? Also? I need something that can get rid of fishy odors."

Yup, that was definitely a jump at someone came in through the door and Turtle sat behind the counter for a moment, glowering at it as she tried to get over that gut reaction. Then, her nose wrinkled. How was he always so impossibly cheerful. She listed the aisles he'd need in order before commenting, "I don't want to know, do I?"

"I'm washing Harriet Jones car," Jamie explained. "Some goof put a load of sardines in the trunk. I'm sure it was a completely honest mistake. What's up with you Wexler? You looked surprised when I came in."

"No, I didn't," Turtle argued quickly. "You just imagined that; I'm fine."

"Okay," Jamie said with a shrug. "If you say so. Say do you have anything here that British people would like?"

With a slight shift of her eyes, Turtle was thinking that she should probably have a better idea of what British people would like. Although, technically, he was Welsh, anyway.

"We have a good selection of tea?" she offered with uncertainty.

"Boooooo-ring," Jamie said rolling his eyes. "C'mon. Something with... zap."

"We don't really have any lasers available without a ridiculous amount of paperwork," Turtle informed him a little sadly. "Could try the Wellspring Arms..." Pause. Lip bite. Darkening in the eyes. "...um, got good guns there..."

"Well I meant 'Zap' in like when someone opens it it's like 'OH WOW WHAT A COOL GIFT!' but firearms aren't a bad idea," Jamie replied. "I didn't know you were a fan of guns. Do you shoot on a regular basis?"

"...No," Turtle said quietly after a long pause. "But I do own one, know how to properly care for it and use it."

In fact, the gun in question was currently conveniently in arm's reach under the counter. She was quite possibly never leaving the school without it again.

"I wouldn't exactly call myself a 'fan.'"

"I'm not one myself," Jamie admitted. "Though I'm a fair shot if I ever have to be. I tend not to keep one around as I may end up annoying myself and that can lead to something messy."

Turtle knew it was meant as a joke, but she found it difficult to find a lot of humor in shooting people right now. still, though, she tried, weakly, with a small grin and a breath of a forced laugh. "May end up?" she commented.

"Hey, for other people? When you do things to annoy yourself you can't deck yourself," Jamie replied. "When I annoy myself? I actually have to deal with an actual other person who is me. It's especially bad when I play poker since I usually cheat."

Turtle's head tilted a little in perhaps a bit more deeper thought than the topic required, but it was something that wasn't shooting so much anymore so she was latching on. "But...shouldn't you be able to tell when bluff, considering that you know your own methods? So what would be the point in cheating yourself if you know that you'll know that you're cheating?"

"Well I always promise myself I'll play a good game but one of me usually suckers the rest of me in," Jamie said once again wishing there were pronouns that specifically addressed his situation. "This is usually why we end up playing Go Fish. Usually there's no money involved."

"Then where's the fun?" Turtle offered with a grin coming a bit more naturally.

"Well I usually change the rules as we go along," Jamie admitted. "And then there was the time we switched to a Tarot card deck."

"How'd that work out?"

"Well if the configuration is to believed? I'm destined to become a sheep in my next life."

"And how do you feel about that?" Turtle asked almost philosophically, slumping slightly on her hand propped up by the counter.

Jamie shrugged. "It wouldn't be too ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-ad."

"Oh, Go--" It would take a will of steel to ignore that one. Turtle had a pretty strong will, this was true, but nothing could prepare her for that and a snort of a laugh wrangled out of her in spite of herself. Palm met forehead. "That was awful, Jamie." But it did lean her grinning, staring at him for a moment with a shake of her head.

"Really? I could have shorn that was funny."

"...Okay, now that's pushing it!" Turtle did a poor job insisting, fighting that smirk like she was.

"Wool you like me to stop?"

"It's not funny, Jamie!" Turtle informed him, but the threat of a giggle might suggest otherwise. She was doing well with holding it in, her face red from the effort.

"Okay! Okay! I'll stop. But only because ewe asked for it."

Turtle bit her lip, drawing in a breath. "You done yet? No more hiding in there?"

Jamie thought about it for a moment. "Oh flock me. I was shear there was another pun or two to use."

Turtle was really, really going to regret this.

"Well, I suppose if you can't ramember..."

"Damn," Jamie swore. "You bleat me to the punchline."

Turtle lowered her head slightly to glare calculatingly at him, but all she was coming up with were ones already done. Dang it.

"...You're good," she complimented after a moment. She might have given it more if she wasn't feeling as she did.

"I try," Jamie said getting his usual Grape Judas. "And thank you for not punching me for all the puns."

Turtle shook her head. "Don't sweat it. I don't punch anyway; I kick, and I'm too lazy today to bother going around the counter. Consider it your typical dumb luck."

Marco snuck in like a sneaky thing.

Except that, unlike the other times, being a sneaky thing with Turtle the way she'd been these last few days wouldn't quite be enough. Even the slightest shift in the air conditioning flow in the store had Turtle's rapt attention.

Which, considering how Turtle had been these last few days, was a damn good thing for Marco. Once she realized it was him trying to be sneaky, she frowned and followed him with careful eyes, but didn't say anything.

Weird (but nice) day today. Will be at work from noon to 5 pm EST, but otherwise around!
