Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 11/13 ]

Turtle Wexler sat behind the counter of her store, usually one of the happiest places on earth, looking absolutely miserable. The slightest sound made her wince, even just the rush of mechanics from the SquishyBot, and she could barely even say "Thank you for shopping Turtle & Canary," without breaking into a fit of hacking coughs before she even finished her name. She was thinking, looking longingly at the door, that she might as well just close up shop early today, but, ugh, she still had radio to do later. Without Jeff, because he was in freaking England or Wales or wherever. Maybe that was for the best, actually, because she probably looked as bad and gross as she felt.

Turtle blew her nose loudly. Being sick sucked.

Today's Squishy flavors: Mucus, Phlegm, Grape Judas.

Turtle & Canary is open and sick.

Another several boxes of painkillers went smack on the counter.

Kerrigan gave Turtle a Look. It would've probably been far more effective a few days earlier. "No pushing things on me," she warned the girl.

"Okay," Kerrigan said, pausing at the state of the girl. "That's... good." She cocked her head faintly.

And that got her a sharp look. "You think?" Kerrigan asked, following the girl's movements carefully. "Radio has 'em dropping like flies."

"Yeah."

She put some money on the counter without taking her eyes off Turtle. "Are you sure you're going to be able to handle doing radio yourself?" Kerrigan asked, after a few moments and very much despite herself.

"You're still sick," Kerrigan pointed out, because she was so totally not a hypocrite about these things, "Don't want you falling over into a microphone or busting all our eardrums in a coughing fit."

Tactful, tactful.

This was a bad idea.

This was an exceptionally bad idea.

She was so going to blame the headache.

"You're a student, I'm a teacher," Kerrigan said, with alarm bells blaring at her not to say what she was about to say, "I'm technically responsible for you kids..."

Yeah. This was a bad idea.

Kerrigan sighed, pressing two fingers to her forehead. "Just gonna be there to make sure you don't keel over, kid," she said. "Don't expect me to say anything."

"Fine with me."

She took the painkillers off the counter, stuffing them into the pocket of her jacket. "Catch you outside the dorms beforehand."

Kerrigan was so going to headdesk when she went back to her office.
