Luke's Diner; Wednesday [ 12/12 ]

Maybe it was the extreme highs and lows of the week before. Maybe it was the repetition of the numbers of the day. Who knew, but A.J. was feeling a bit of an introspective and inspirational type of groove at the diner today. It was very cool, he decided, frowning with his forehead in a sort of ponderous way at just...life. Man. Y'know? Very cool.

Ino, realizing she hadn't talked to A.J. in far, far too long, wandered down to Luke's mid-afternoon. Kabu-chan was sleeping, head resting against her shoulder and Ino hardly noticed his weight now. She was still going to kill Kabuto for saddling her with the baby and then avoiding her for the week. Honestly.

"Hey, stranger!"

"Hey!" A.J. greeted her with a grin and then blinked, head tilting as he saw what Ino was carrying in. "You...have a robot baby...thing," he observed.

She grinned ruefully, "I've named it Kabu-chan, it's homework for Ethics."

A.J.'s head tilted just a tad bit more. "It's kind of...weird looking. Kabu-chan, huh?"

"It grows on you." She said, hardly noticing what the baby looked like anymore. "I named it after Kabuto, because hopefully that will bother him at least a little." Ino wrinkled her nose, "He's my partner and yet he saddled me with this all week and is avoiding me like crazy. I've had Kabu-chan since last Thursday, does that sound fair to you?"

A.J. chuckled a little. "Not in the slightest, but I don't feel bad for thinking that, yeah, you did name him after Kabuto. Is the little guy hard to care for, though?"

"Not too bad really, after I figured out that I'd get better results with him if I stopped raising my voice every time he started to scream." She smiled down at the baby, "He really doesn't like loud noises, or people startling him. I'm even getting used to carrying him around everywhere with me."

A.J.'s mouth twisted, an expression halfway between concern and trying not to be amused. "Getting used to it? You're not, like, going to go through withdrawal symptoms or something when you have to give him up, are you? We could be discovering the secret, internal, too-strong-to-control maternal nature of Ino here."

Ino looked slightly alarmed at the thought. "I'm not maternal at all! Geez." Nevermind that she was managing a baby just fine all on her. "And I'd better not go through withdrawal symptoms because I've got to give him back tomorrow."

"Is Kabuto taking him tonight at all?"

She looked incredulous. "I severely doubt it." Really now.

"That's really lame," A.J. said, frowning. "At least it'll probably show up badly for his grade, right?"

And he was politely keeping the thought he was having about how all his friends seemed to just have really crappy boyfriends to himself.

"It had better, or there's going to be a lot of complaining from me." Ino said, "We were paired for the last project in Ethics too and he didn't even bother to show up to class! If he passes I'll be surprised."

Ino would even agree that Kabuto was a crappy boyfriend. Sometimes. She looked moody. "As soon as Kabu-chan's gone I'm going to have words with him."

A.J. nodded. "You do that. I would."

Actually, he probably wouldn't. But he could pretend he would.

Ino bit her lip, before deciding to go ahead and say the first thing that sprang to mind. She wanted to know. "Like the words you had with Annette?" Her voice wasn't accusing or anything, but Ino was definitely poking her nose into this matter.

A.J. blinked, turning a little pale. Okay. So maybe he would have had words, but it would have taken, you know, about a year of drama and build-up before he'd get them.

"Uhhh...."

And then he frowned. "That's totally different, man," he turned slightly, a shoulder lifting in discomfort. "Totally different."

"Care to explain how?" Ino pressed, keeping her voice purposefully light, "Because two of my friends fighting is totally not right with me. Especially when it's more than a minor spat."

"I...don't want to talk about it," A.J. said with a little bit of insistence. "It's between me and Annette, Ino, and I plan to keep it that way."

He paused, then, as something suddenly struck him. "Wait a second; did she...well, of course she mentioned something to you because I know I didn't. She didn't send you over here to talk to me, did she?"

Anger increasingly showed the more he spoke.

"No." Ino's eyes narrowed at his tone of voice. "In fact, she told me not to bother. It sounded a lot like she was throwing the towel in on a friendship." Ino clearly disapproved of this.

A.J. didn't even know where to begin to respond to that one. So he just picked up his jaw from where it practically fell to the floor for a second and just shook his head. "Well, fuck me," he muttered, although, really, he shouldn't be surprised. At all. Son of a...

"She also said she didn't want to 'interrupt your life' by apologizing again, and mentioned that you have a girlfriend." Ino's eyebrow's raised, "And I have no idea whatsoever how whoever you're dating works into this equation. But can you at least see why I want to know what's going on?"

A.J. almost lost his jaw again.

"Because you're concerned for her sanity, maybe?" he guessed, because, really. Last he knew, he didn't have a girlfriend. Then again, there was also the whole thing where he was apparently the only one to not know he supposedly had a boyfriend, which just made him realize that he might have to talk to Beauty stat. "Oh, God," he buried his face in his hands, his fingers working to massage out the building headache. "Just shoot me now, Ino, seriously."

Gone between 11 am and 7;30 pm EST for work, but otherwise around and yay yay yay.

Although might crash soon after posting this, 'cause it's laaaate.
