Anders barely grunted at Tino and the band as he came in to work tonight, preoccupied with last-minute holiday shopping plans; he set everything up with the efficiency and personal concern of a robot ~~(imagine that)~~ and proceeded to camp out behind the bar with his laptop.

The zombies seemed kind of disappointed. They'd been hoping he'd notice the look they were trying on tonight.

Lana stopped in to see her friend.

"Hey, you," Anders said, looking up from his laptop. "What can I get you on the house tonight?"

"Just a coke would be great," Lana said. "And thanks. What are you up to?"

"Trying like crazy to get all my shopping done." Anders gave her a lopsided, wry smile. "I'm never going to figure out the mysteries of shipping rates and delivery times."

Lana nodded. "Yeah, it can get pretty confusing. I don't really have many people to buy for so that makes it easier."

"That does help, yeah," agreed Anders as he filled a glass from the soda fountain and slid it over to her. "I just keep worrying that I'm going to forget someone and it's making me paranoid."

"I usually get a couple of little extra things," Lana admitted. "Stuff like I give to friends that I don't really know that well. And I wrap them but don't put a name tag on them. And then if someone unexpected gives me something I can pull one of those out."

"That's the plan, yeah." Anders flipped through a couple of browser tabs on his laptop and shook his head. "Wow. Seriously, who needs a sterling silver ring with a built-in microphone (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8319617)?"

"Wow, um... not me, that's for sure," Lana said. "How bizarre."

Anders turned the display around to show her. "It's not even remotely cool looking," he said, perplexed. "It looks like a cheesegrater."

"Just what everyone wants to be wearing on their finger," Lana said, rolling her eyes.

"Sometimes," Anders said, shaking his head, "I wonder if people just build things to see what they can do with technology."

"They probably do," Lana admitted. "Seems to be human nature."

Anders started dumping Coke, ice, and lime juice into a blender for himself. "Next thing you know they'll probably try to see if they can build people."

"If they haven't already." She watched Anders. "That looks good," she said.

"Coke and lime freeze." Anders paused, a hand over the soda fountain gun. "You wanna try one too?"

"Sure," Lana said, "if it isn't any trouble."

"As if it would be," scoffed Anders in an affectionate tone. He promptly -- not without some flair -- dumped a second helping of everything into the blender before starting it up, glad he'd remembered to chill some mugs before opening. "Never any trouble making drinks for you."

She smiled up at him. "Thanks, Anders. So... I guess you heard about Chris and Johnny..."

Thinking of the video footage back in his room, Anders nodded. "Ohhhhhh, yeah. I saw 'em out there looking for cows, and let me tell you, that was disturbing."

"I'm not sure Chris has left his room since," Lana admitted. "I went to see him the next day, but he was taking it all pretty hard."

"First gremlin bite, huh?" Anders grimaced sympathetically. "You know, I've got a photo album full of pictures of my first gremlin bite experience that got posted all over the dorms. Maybe that'd help him feel a little better about it?"

Said pictures also did involve Anders in a distinctly naked state of undress, but he wasn't mentioning that part, because there was potential for Chris-trauma there . . .

"It might," Lana said thoughtfully. "If the two of you weren't likely to rip each other to shreds in the process. And I'd be very uhappy if that happened."

Anders acknowledged the point with a sheepish grin and a shrug. "Which is why I figured, you know, delivery by a neutral third party?"

Lana looked at him a little suspiciously. "This isn't going to make him feel even worse, is it?"

Still not mentioning a word of the video footage, Anders gave her an innocent look -- but he actually meant it. "I really hope not. I just figured, y'know, naked and unconscious in the hallway with a lampshade over my head, and then people drawing on me with makeup . . ."

"Maybe I'll tell him about it first," Lana said. "See if he wants to see it."

For when you're in the wrong prison cell and the wrong company.

This is what happens when I get "Tobacco Island" stuck in my head ALL DAY.
