Turtle & Canary; Monday [ 12/17 ]

Turtle sat behind the counter of the store with a frown of deep consideration and troubled contemplation on her face. In front of her, she held the glittery "Now Hiring" sign that was previously in the window. The sign had, as such signs usually do, helped, but it lead to Sokka being hired. Which Turtle was still feeling was going to be a huge mistake. She probably could use at least another shift picked up, but she was wary. On the other hand, she'd already hired in the worst, right?

Right?

Today's Squishy Flavors: Turkey, Banana, Grape Judas

"Turtle!" Jamie exclaimed as he came into the store. "Do we have a hot drink version of the Grape Judas Squishy?"

Oh, Jamie. Turtle shook her head before imploring him, "Doesn't that go against everything that makes the Squishy sacred?"

"But... It's cold out," Jamie whimpered.

Turtle pouted, because she realized that this is where she would suggest Jamie check out the Perk if he wanted something hot, but, thankfully, she held herself back from deferring her business. "But you just can't mess with the basic nature of the Squishy, Jamie," she tried, instead. "It would cause probably an irreprable hole in the universe, or something. We do have some great deals on hot chocolate and tea and coffee, though, if you're in the mood for something warm. Not quite up to par with Grape Judas, I understand, but still, not a bad substitute."

Jamie frowned, looking disappointed. "Fine. I'll just get a box of hot chocolate."

Oh no. The Disappointed Customer look. Turtle's eyes widened again and, quickly, she commented, "But would you really even want a warm Grape Judas? Part of why it's so good is because it's cold, isn't it?"

"I guess," Jamie said as he grabbed a box of marshmallows. "It's just hard to get my judas fix in cold weather."

*sigh*

"It's warm here," Turtle offered. "You can hang out, chill for a bit until you're not so cold, and then, ta-da! You can still enjoy it without being cold from outside, you know. I can even turn up the thermostat a bit."

A bit.

"Nah. The magic is gone," Jamie said in a glum voice. "I'll just wait until spring."

"For someone who was so insistent that I get it in stock," Turtle muttered, "you sure do give up on it easily."

His Sokka Sense was tingling, and that could only mean one thing -- meat-flavored Squishies!

Well, no, he just happened by randomly, but wouldn't it be cool if he really had a tingly-sense?

So there was Sokka, with his turkey Squishy. "You. Are. The. BEST!!!"

"Welcome to the news that everyone already knows," Turtle commented, eying Sokka with his Squishy. And his choice of flavor. "So, do you, like, have a sensor for the meat-flavored ones, or something?"

Turtle still boggled on why they even made meat flavored ones. And why she kept putting them out.

"No, I don't," Sokka answered. "But wouldn't that be AWESOME!?!??"

He grinned and drank some more. "Why don't you put out the good flavors more often?"

"Because you," Turtle commented, conveniently ignoring the 'good' part, "show up when I do. You ready to work this Thursday?"

Sokka mock-pouted a bit. "But... don't you enjoy my stimulating company? Admit it, I'm the highlight of your day."

Then he nodded. "Don't you worry. I'm all ready for Thursday and good to go. I know more or less where everything is, and if I have any questions, I'll ask Apu. Your store is in good hands."

"Actually," Turtle allowed herself to admit, "currently you kind of are. I'd rather have someone come in and be excited about the Squishies rather than complain because, apparently, did you know it's too cold to enjoy a Squishy?" Promptly she rolled her eyes.

Sokka blinked and looked out at the street. "... I don't get it. What do you mean?"

"He wanted something warm instead," Turtle shrugged. "I explained that it violated the entire nature of the Squishy, and, yeah, it's not even that cold out. We've probably got three feet of snow back home already."

"A WARM Squishy?!?!?!?" Clearly, such a thing was an unholy abomination. "Why would you WANT that?!??!"

He nodded out the window. "I'm from the South Pole," he mentioned. "This barely qualifies as 'winter'."

Biting her lip a little, Turtle smiled. Maybe hiring Sokka in was going to turn out to be a smart move after all. At the very least, he understood the crucial Squishy dynamic. Even if she'd never quite comprehend his taste in them, he simply got the basic essence of her beautiful cash cow.

"The South Pole? Really? Is that the pole with the penguins, or are they in the North?"

"No, there are penguins," Sokka answered, with a nod. "But not your kind of penguins. REAL penguins, with whiskers and four flippers. They're pretty tasty."

"...Is there any animal you won't eat?"

Because she was really starting to wonder.

Sokka gave that some serious thought. "Well, the disgusting ones, obviously... ...Oh, sorry! Are you a vegetarian? That's cool if you are."

Turtle shook her head. "No, definitely not." She found it a little un-American to be a vegetarian, in all honesty. The meat industry was a very firm foundation block in the economy, after all. "I've just never known anyone who ate penguins. Four-footed ones at that."

There was a pause.

"They don't taste like chicken by chance, do they?"

"Two feet," Sokka corrected. "Four flippers." He flapped his arms to demonstrate. "...And sure, they taste about as much like chicken as turkey does. But better."

"Turkey doesn't taste anything like chicken, Sokka."

"That... was sort of my point," Sokka informed her. "But they taste MORE like chicken than, say, fish."

"Oh." Turtle bit her lip. "I see."

"No, you don't," Sokka countered, because he recognized that look. "You're just humoring me because you think I'm nuts."

"No, I do!" Turtle interjected, straightening a little with her conviction. "I mean it, too! Around here, you gotta learn to suspend your disbelief a little, you know? I don't think you're nuts."

In this matter, at any rate.

LOL, you don't. Some of you crazy kids out there have met him, though. And, I know, I keep trying to get his crazy butt in on this, but he claims there's too many words and not enough pretty moving pictures.

And he's also got that whole WoW thing going on *shakes head*
