So a nice, productive day of repressing all of the memories that his conversation with Angelus had stirred up had done nothing for him yesterday.

Which was why Anakin was now in the gym beating the crap out of the punching bags.

Much better.

Jolee didn't want anyone to know, but he actually worked hard to keep in shape. That meant sneaking into the gym when people weren't looking.

But there was someone already here today. "What did that punching bag ever do to you?"

Anakin took a step back. "Nothing," he admitted, "but doing this to an actual person would be a mistake."

"I'm glad you know that," Jolee said. "If you don't mind me asking... actually, forget that part because I'm going to ask whether or not you mind, which you probably do, but what's with the mood today? It seems even worse than normal."

Anakin ran his hands through his hair. "There's a complete--" he paused, then let loose with a stream of Huttese profanity both creative and descriptive, "--in the jail. He used to be a friend of mine."

"Is this a friend in the 'brother in arms and we liked each other' kind of way or in the 'it's a sarcastic euphemism because even the Hutts don't have words strong enough' way?" Jolee asked. He was familiar with both kinds.

"When he's got a soul, he's a friend of mine," Anakin said. "Now he's a killer wearing my friend's face who I'd promised to kill if he ever resurfaced."

"So it's complicated," Jolee said. "But it seems that you haven't killed him yet. Why is that?"

"He's locked in a cell," Anakin said. "It doesn't seem all that fair, but I'm not going to advocate for letting him out just so I'd feel better about killing him."

"Well, there's always the solution of locking yourself in the cell with him, but if you do that, you're an idiot," Jolee said.

Anakin snorted. "I've had my moments, but...no."

"Good to hear," Jolee said. "Even better to hear that the highest ranking Jedi around here actually admits to having stupid moments."

"I don't sit on the Council any more," Anakin said. "I don't have to pretend to be perfect."

If there was a strong undercurrent of "those hypocritical morons" to his tone, well, Anakin.

If there was grinning as the undercurrent was noticed, well, Jolee.

"It would be more refreshing to hear that you weren't pretending while you were on the Council either. I guess it's too much to hope that things actually changed over all that time."

"They never really accepted my presence there," Anakin said, walking back to the punching bag and giving it another good smack. "Stupid, stupid, stupid Jedi politics."

"I'll complain about the Jedi until I'm blue in the face, but that's not a Jedi thing. That's a people thing," Jolee said. "You must have been the youngest person there. Of course they didn't listen, they assumed you were dumb."

Not that Anakin would admit that.

"Youngest member of the Council since Master Windu," Anakin said. "I think he was jealous."

Yeah, that was totally it.

"Sure, that's it. It's not that you're an extremely prideful, hard-headed, brash young person who manages to get on my nerves when complaining about the Council," Jolee said. "He was jealous."

"I don't like you," Anakin decided, hitting the bag some more.

"Of course not. I'm a very frustrating person," Jolee said with a smirk.

"I'm glad that you've come to grips with the less endearing parts of your personality," Anakin told him helpfully. "Especially as they seem to make up the majority of your personality."

"I haven't come to grips with it. I've carefully cultivated it over many, many years," Jolee said. "You'll understand it better in another few decades."
