Luke's Diner; Sunday [ 12/30 ]

Well, back to the old grind. But A.J.'d kind of missed this place, he had to admit. He missed the counter, and the coffee maker, and the specials board and the kitchen boys. And he knew the kitchen boys missed him. All those insults and occasionally thrown utensils were just their way of saying they love him. Yup.

"Green hair!" Ino greeted him as she entered the diner, in the early afternoon, "You're back!"

Despite the glare through a few strands of green hanging in his eyes, A.J. commented, "I am. After listening to many compliments on your artistry, I'll have you know. That said, can that be the end of it being mentioned for the remainder of this visit?"

She pouted at him. "But it's cute!" Ino sighed over-dramatically, "But if you insist..." She was a lot more cheerful after having talked to Annette earlier.

A.J. pouted right back because that was his thing. She wasn't going to beat him at his own game. "Please don't tell me you just came here to tease me, because that means I don't even get a chance to put something gross in your milkshake or something."

Ino wrinkled her nose. "Well, I did want a milkshake but after hearing you say that..." She didn't want anything gross in her shake! "And I'm just happy people are around again. It's been so boooring."

"I'm not going to put anything in your shake," A.J. amended with a little grin. "Assuming, of course, you don't say anything about the hair. Very simple. And, yeah, Beauty mentioned it was boring as hell around here, too."

"Some kind of shake with chocolate in it then, please." Today was a chocolate sort of day.

Ino bit her lip to keep from asking what Beauty had thought of his hair. "It's been like we're all just rattling around in a ghost town," she said instead, "it's crazy what a difference having almost no one around makes. How was your time away from the island?"

"Something with chocolate," A.J. repeated the request with a nod; he took a second to consider whether to make just a plain old chocolate shake or to mix it up a bit before getting to work. "Got it. And? It was a blast. So much fun getting to see all my old Jersey friends again, but, at the same time, I'm really glad to be back here, too, because now it'll be fun to see you guys again, y'know?"

She grinned. "The best of both worlds then? I know I'm crazy glad people are coming back, I missed people and I didn't even go anywhere!"

"Do I count among those people?" A.J. asked as he scooped up some chocolate ice cream, with a slight puppy-dog lilt in his voice and in his glance toward her.

"You might." She teased, watching him with amused eyes.

"Might," A.J. scoffed a little, rolling his eyes, pouring some milk, "she says, as if someone else has been around to make her delicious milkshakes and so innocently bear the brunt of her oppression. Might!"

"The brunt of my oppression?" Ino couldn't help but laugh at that, "You haven't seen anything yet, A.J."

"I know, I know," A.J. said, turning around so that his back was to her as she went to add a slight bit of something else as a surprise to make it more than just boring chocolate. "You're just waiting to pull out all the stops and be really evil to me when I least expect it. I understand."

"I'm glad you're so understanding of it," she grinned at his back, "it'll make it easier on you in the long run."

A.J.'s head bobbed. "I've accepted my fate, yes. It is--"

As usual, A.J. had made it over to the blender to mix the shake, his mouth moving as he continued to talk in utter lack of realization that no one could ever hear him when he worked that machine.

"--of pepper and Olympic sports."

In about two seconds after he'd poured it into a cup for Ino, A.J. had presented her with her milkshake, something chocolaty, with a hint of mint.

She took her milkshake with a grin and raised eyebrows, "What's of pepper and... Olympic? sports?" Not his fate, surely. "I couldn't catch what you were saying."

"Hm?" A.J.'s head tilted and, blinking, it took him a second to realize what she was talking about. "Oh. Sorry! I tend to do that. It...it would be too difficult to explain if you didn't catch half of it." He chuckled a little. "Anything involving Mark is hard to explain."

"He's one of your friends back home?" Ino asked, sipping her shake, and grinning at the smidge of mint.

A.J. bobbed his head in a nod. "Yup. And the craziest person I know. That's a title he's maintained, by the way, after I started going here, if that tells you anything."

Ino blinked. "You're serious about that? He's still the craziest person ever? Wow." Because there was quite a bit of crazy on the island...

A.J. chuckled. "The guy is seriously special. Lives in his own special little world. Population: One. Himself." And his chuckling died down into a shake of his head. "One of these days, I swear, I'm gonna just have to bring a bunch of you home with me. Especially after last week, because they all want to meet some of you guys, too."

Aroundish, although periodically slow, all day, wheeeeee.
