Magic Box, Wednesday [ 01/02 ]

Andrew came in on time and set up for his shift. That is, if setting up included unlocking the door and then retreating behind the counter to watch yet another depressing movie on his laptop while drinking Capri Sun and working his way through an economy sized bag of Dove chocolate.

Andrew was speaking along with the two characters on screen. "Do you love making love to me?"

"Yes."

"More than peanut butter?"

"Yes, much more."

The Magic Box is open.

Chris had made a promise to Neil that he'd keep an eye on Andrew.

So here he was, stopping by the Magic Box to look around and have a chat.

"Hey, man, how's it going?"

Andrew looked up from his laptop. "Oh, hey, Chris. I didn't hear you come in." Andrew paused his movie and glanced about the store, just in case anyone else had slipped in without his notice. "I'm here," he replied. "Just holding down the fort today with Brad and um, whoever this other chick is." He gestured at the screen.

"Cool," Chris said. "Looking forward to classes starting?"

Andrew shrugged. "I guess," he said, not really looking very excited about anything.

Chris figured that was the case. "Did you do anything interesting for the holidays?"

Again Andrew shrugged. "Neil and I went to Wintergreen for a few days," he said. "He taught me how to ski and..." he trailed off, obviously not wanting to finish the statement.

"I'm sorry," Chris said. "I know that probably doesn't help, but I am."

"Thanks," Andrew replied. He picked up his bag of chocolate and held it out towards Chris. "Want one?"

"Sure," Chris said, taking a chocolate. "If you ever wanna hang out or anything, you know where I live."

"Oh, you're leaving?" Andrew looked a little sad. Well, sadder. "I don't need to watch this movie or anything. I've seen it enough to pretty much memorize it."

"Oh, no," Chris said. "I was gonna stick around for a while. I've never really checked out what this place has to offer."

"Is there anything you need?" Andrew asked, hopping up. "We have candles, spell components, books, charms, random weird looking things that may or may not be important to various kinds of magic."

Chris chuckled. "I don't know. I'm not planning to do any magic, but I guess it can't hurt to have some basics."

Mary was doing her errands in town today and popped into the Magic Shop since she hadn't been in for a while. She smiled at the unfamiliar boy at the counter. "Is it a good movie?" she asked.

Andrew glanced up and quickly paused the film. He should really pay more attention to the store. "Yeah. I mean, it's Brad Pitt, so how can it be bad, right?"

"You can never go wrong with Brad Pitt," agreed Mary.

"Even if he is playing the role of death," Andrew said, nodding in agreement. "Is there anything I can help you with, um, mama?"

"Brad Pitt looks good no matter what role he's playing, as long as it doesn't involve facial hair," said Mary.

She blinked twice. "Mama?"

Andrew grimaced slightly. "I was just trying to be, you know, polite?"

He scratched his head. "I was taught to respect my elders. And you've got to be at least a senior in school, right? Though I haven't seen you in any classes."

He hoped that soothed things over.

Mary blushed. "I'm a bit older than that, actually, and I don't go to the school. My name's Mary and I run the hotel in town."

"Oh, a business woman, tres impressivo," Andrew replied. "I've been by the hotel a few times to bug Jeff. It's swanky."

"Thanks. I had a lot of fun remodeling the hotel when I got here, plus it kept me occupied when I was going through some stuff," said Mary. Thank goodness most of that was behind her.

"I was hoping to see what kind of candles you have in stock. I seem to be going through a lot of them lately. Lots of candlelight dinners with the boyfriend," she added with a grin.

Andrew suddenly found himself oddly jealous. He no longer belonged in the couples club. It hurt.

"We have all kinds of candles," he replied. "Are you looking for anything in particular? Scented? Mystical? Beeswax?"

"Probably both scented and unscented ones," said Mary. "Do the mystical candles do anything fun?"

"Some of them make some pretty radical claims," Andrew said with a grin. "We, of course, don't stand behind them, but you're welcome to give them a try. There are a lot of fertility candles. Are you thinking about having a baby?"
