Turtle & Canary; Wednesday [ 01/02 ]

Before opening the shop, Turtle had given Apu, Liz, and the SquishyBot a very long winded inspiration speech about success in the new year. And then she sent Apu out to clean up the back stock room because he'd fallen sleep. The other two probably would have done the same, except they were robots. But, finally, she finished up, cleaned up a bit, and then settled down, bouncily, behind the counter for what felt like a promisingly successful startto the new year.

Because he won't stay in that stock room all day, much to Turtle's annoyance.

Get her away from that coffee. Not like it'll be hard, she hates the stuff, anyway, but it makes her so bouncy!

Annette came in. Yes, no fanfare, no showy display. She just walked right up to counter and asked. "Can I buy storage containers in bulk?"

Turtle grinned broadly. "We can always do bulk special orders here at Turtle & Canary," she pronounced proudly. "Just ask Jim or Jamie. They're two of many satisfied special order customers. If you'd like, I can grab one of our supply catalogs to flip through, Annette, or, if you already have a particular storage container that we already have on stock in mind, I can just get the numbers for it and send out the order for exactly how many you'll need today, and have it back to you as soon as possible."

Annette smiled. Leave it to Turtle to be efficiently helpful. "I just want good, tight, secure ones. In three different sizes from large to small, large being not too large -- easy to handle. They also have to be able to be mailed. I'm not in any hurry but the sooner the better."

"No problemo," Turtle nodded, bouncing slightly because of all the coffee and, hello, big bulk sale. "I can definitely do all the technical work for you if you'd like." Because the technical work, to her, was fun. Especially the part where she'd haggle with the distributer to give her a better deal so she came in with a higher profit. "Did you have a price range you wanted to work with? And about how many of each unit were you thinking?"

"No, price is not an issue though I know you'll give me the best deal, right?" she asked, grinning slightly. "And I was thinking, at least ten of each, stackable within each other so I can store them easily until I get ready to use them."

"You know, Annette," Turtle said, carefully, because you never wanted to sound too eager. That made people feel suspicious of being swindled. That that Turtle would ever swindle, though, of course. She just might...take advantage of certain opportunities. "For a small rental fee, I could actually store them here in the backroom until you're ready to use them. In fact, Apu is cleaning out the back today, so I know I'll have more than enough room."

"That would be perfect, Turtle," she said, her eyes bright. "That way I can go ahead and get ready what I need to pack up. Can you have someone deliver them to my room when I'm ready for them, and say... only a quarter at a time so my room is not too full all at once?" Annette couldn't stand clutter; everything had it's place and she would stick to that disciplined routine else she would go crazy. And a crazy Annette just wasn't good.

Turtle's head bobbed in a nod. "Yeah, that wouldn't be a problem at all, Annette. I'll get everything worked out today, and then I'll give you a call and we can talk about prices and things like that once I've got some numbers to work with."

There was a pause, and she tilted her head with a slight frown. "Getting ready to pack up soon, or are you being, just, like, planning super-extreme early?"

"Thanks, Turtle, that sounds great," she said, ready to go until Turtle spoke again. "Uhh, I just have some packing of... certain things I need to get rid of. Organize. It's all about organization and... unwanted stuff. Certain... stuffs can just get overwhelming until you wake up and realize you have too much stuff and that stuff just needs to go. Know what I mean?"

Turtle's eyes were a little wide. "That's a lot of unwanted clutter," she commented.

Annette looked down, bit her lip. "Uh-huh..."

"Are you just sending it all back home?" Turtle wondered. "Or are you going to donate it? Or, wait, is it just stuff you're getting rid of because you're running out of room, or 'cause you don't want it anymore?"

Annette looked at Turtle, arching a brow. "That's a lot of questions, Turtle. No, No ummm maybe, no though I might add a few personal items to decrease the amount of space that is currently being taken up by unnecessary stuff in my room, and uhhh no."

"Huh." Turtle's head tilted, considering each of the answers and deciding that, yeah, Annette was just weird. Weird and had a lot of stuff. She nodded. "Okay, then, I'll get started on that and let you know when everything's all set."

The fact was, it wasn't actually Annette's stuff. But she was not going to divulge that bit of information. It could get her in big time trouble. She was not above lying here. "Thanks, Turtle! Talk to you later!" And out she went, light on her step and humming to herself. This was going to be wayy too much fun.

After her stop at the Magic Box, a worried-looking Mary came into the store. "Hi Turtle," she said, trying to smile. "I need to pick up some small things today. Some small, very important things, actually."

Tilting her head a little bit at the strained attempt to smile, Turtle gave a small smile back. "Sure," she said, "what kind of small, very important things?"

Mary looked around, then lowered her voice to a whisper. "I need to buy condoms," she said.

Turtle facepalmed a little. "Why do people always need to feel it necessary to mention it to me when they buy those?" She let out a heavy sigh. "Aisle ~~Handwavey~~. I swear, I should just put up a big glittery sign so people can find them themselves."

"Sorry," said Mary. "A big glittery sign would definitely help, though." She disappeared into the aisles and returned with a box.

"One more thing, just to cover all the bases, and I'm going to apologize in advance for this one," said Mary, taking a deep breath. "Which aisle has the pregnancy tests?"

Turtle had just been recovering, too, by the time Mary came back. Her mouth formed a little circle along with her eyes this time, and she very subtly (or so she thought) looked a bit around for any squirrels before leaning in and whispering, "Same aisle. Although, you know, you could probably go to the clinic for all this sort of thing, too."

Some things? Were better left unknown, even if it meant losing a sale or two. Really. And, besides, it just felt weird feeling suddenly more knowledgeable about safe sex practices that someone almost, oh, she didn't know, maybe, like, three times her age, or something.

Not that things like that were a concern to her at this age, of course, oh em gee.

It wasn't as if Mary didn't know these things. It was just that she got caught up so quickly in a new relationship that certain things were forgotten.

She returned with another box. "I'll keep the clinic in mind, but I don't think it will be necessary. I'm just being overly cautious."

Turtle's eyes and head shifted slightly to one side as she politely, if obviously, kept her mouth shut on her own opinion on what Mary could do if she really wanted to be overly cautious, but, again. Three times her age and not something Turtle really wanted to think about anyway. She was also feeling glad that, if there were squirrels hiding in the gum rack again, that at least this wasn't Monday, because then she'd be stuck with the fact that Jeff would try to keep that note.

"Good to know," she said and totaled up the two items. "Anything else?"

"No, I think that will be all for today," said Mary, hoping that there weren't any squirrels around because this was not something she wanted to hear about on the radio tonight.

Too early for the world to end this year.
