Caritas, Wednesday Night

She was forgetting something. She had clean laundry - well, some, anyway. She was back in town. Still had Christmas gifts to wrap - yeah, yeah, late, but she knew she forgot that. Faith tried to shake off her leftover New Year's hangover and --

Wednesday?

There was a blur of cursing, grumpy slayer beating a path to Caritas.

Stupid New Year's messing up her days like that. How the hell was it Wednesday, anyway?

Tino glared at her, but Faith just hoped Jolee wasn't going to bitch.

After an uncomfortable return (http://oncourtandstage.livejournal.com/6886.html) from the holidays, Troy found himself wandering to Caritas and coming up to the bar. "Hey," he said. "Can I get a beer?"

"Sure can," Faith said, nodding to the boy at the counter as she filled a mug. "Rough day?"

"You could say that," Troy replied, taking the mug. "My boyfriend just broke up with me for a girl."

"That counts," Faith shrugged. "You want something stronger?"

Troy looked at the beer for a moment, then downed it in a few long swallows. "Sure," he said. "Whatever you recommend. I've pretty much only ever had beer, but... something stronger would be nice."

Faith poured him a Jack-and-Coke. Hey, it was her drink of choice. "Just a heads-up, you end up passing out here, I'm not gonna carry your drunk ass back to wherever."

Troy shrugged. "I should be okay," he said, drinking the Jack-and-Coke a little more sedately. He even managed not to wince (much) at the stronger alcohol. "I wanna get drunk, not completely blitzed. I think."

"Your call," she shrugged, wiping the counter with a rag. "I'm just the girl that serves 'em."

Troy continued to drink the Jack-and-Coke more slowly than he had the beer -- which wasn't saying much. Quickly enough, he'd finished. "Can I get another, then?" he asked, pushing the glass back towards Faith.

"You're paying, I'm pouring," Faith said cheerfully, replacing his glass with a full one.

Troy took the glass and threw some money onto the counter that he thought ought to cover the three drinks plus tip -- which it did, if you like getting tipped fifty percent. "Thanks," he said, drinking this one slower yet.

"Didn't mean you had to on the spot," she waved. "Just saying, man with the money calls the shots. Makes me sound like a hooker, don't it?"

She scooped up the money anyway, because hey. Money.

Hoshi wouldn't have noticed the lateness since she got out of the dorms a lot later than she planned. Besides, she was too busy jumping at every noise and squealing at every shadow she came across since the last time she left the dorms at night, she had a most unpleasant encounter.

All this before she even stepped inside of Caritas and got her first look at the honest-to-goodness zombies on stage.

So now there was a very freaked out Hoshi at the bar. "I could really really use a drink right now," she said.

"Know that feeling," Faith said, filling a glass with ice. "You got a preference, or you gonna let me pick your poison?"

"You could pick something, because I don't really know what to have," said Hoshi, looking around nervously.

"Not a big drinker?" Faith asked. "Can hook you up with something light and all college-girl-drinker. Or if you just wanna get fucked up, skip straight to the hard stuff."

"I've only been to a bar one time, and that was because there was a mob outside and I ran in to get help," said Hoshi. "Something light would probably be best."

Faith thought it over, and mixed the girl up a strawberry daquiri. "Try that. Too much, and I make you something else. Did the drunk people go take on the mob, or no?"

"Thanks," said Hoshi, taking a sip of her drink. "This is nice. What is it called? And yeah, there were a couple of military officers in the bar. They called for back-up and went out there to take on the mob."

"Strawberry daquiri," she said. "Nice and sweet, all frozen and shit. I wasn't thinking army guys, just your average drunk crowd itchin' for a fight."

Carmela's not quite her usual energetic self as she flops in to a seat at the bar.

"Something cheerful-looking?" she implores. "Maybe with one of those little umbrellas. Those are cool."

Hoshi, having stopped by to see Charlie, took a wild guess why Carmela was there. "Guess you couldn't talk her out of leaving," she said.

"Yeah," Carmela says glumly, fiddling with a napkin. "It pretty much sucks."

"I'm sorry," said Hoshi.

"Thanks," Carmela says. "She's gonna write, and stuff, but it's not the same, you know?"

"Yeah, I know," said Hoshi. "It's sad to see someone leave once you've gotten attached to them." Hoshi hadn't really experience that before, mainly because she never got that attached to people at home.

"Lemme see what we got," Faith said, rummaging behind the bar.

A minute or so later, she produced a festive-looking Singapore Sling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Singapore_Sling.jpg), three umbrellas jammed into the top. "Like that?"

"That's perfect," Carmela says, smiling a little and lifting the glass in a toast before taking a sip. "Thanks!"

"Fair warning," she said, "if you make the zombies sing something peppy and annoying to cheer you up, I might slip something nasty in the next one."

"I save the peppy and annoying for when I'm home and need to bring my little brother down a notch or two," Carmela informs her. "So no worries."

"Just so we're clear," she grinned. "Don't have any little brothers. I'd probably have gone straight to punching them in the face."

"Sometimes I'm tempted," Carmela admits. "But if I did that he'd probably teleport me to Pluto or something."

"Ohhhhh." Faith shrugged. "One of those families. Gotcha."

"Barkeep!" called Jenny ~~not Steve~~ cheerfully as she took a seat at the bar. "Booze for the post-birthday girl, please!"

"Happy you-still-look-damn-good-for-a-hundred-and-change," Faith said, picking up a bottle of whiskey and pouring. "Did you get plastered?"

"I did!" said Jenny. "We had cake and booze in trippy heaven. And then we went to a strip club. Except the Doctor, because he is dead, and Jack because he does not have a proper appreciation for oiled-up naked men." Jenny was positive Jenny Quantum's birthday party, held later in the day, hadn't been half as good. For one thing, half the Authority had still been nursing hangovers.

"You ever go again," Faith said, handing Jenny a glass and taking a swig from her own, "call me. I certainly got an appreciation for cake, booze, and oily naked men."

Jenny took a drink of her booze and said, "I'll be sure to do that if I get enough warning next time. This was like a surprise party."

"Nice friends," she grinned. "You don't have to drag me anyway, just offering. You ever need someone to come along and appreciate guys and booze? I'm there for you."

"I'll keep that in mind," Jenny said with a grin. "I think my friends would like you. Midnighter, even, and he doesn't like anyone."

Troy moved down the bar to raise his second Jack-and-Coke towards Jenny. "Happy Birfday," he said, the alcohol really starting to hit his system.

Jenny nodded at him. "Thanks, mate." Aw, he was drunk. That was cute. He was also cute, which was cute.

Chillax. Or invent some other word like that.
