Turtle & Canary; Thursday [01/03]

Sokka was preoccupied when he arrived at work. There was a rescue mission going on, and he wasn't part of it! That wasn't good. VERY not good. He nervously sucked down Squishies, one after the other.

"Apu, do you think I'm awesome?"

Today's Squishy flavors: Meat with meat sauce, Abominable Snowman, Grape Judas

Evie was dragging her feet, because really, only a day longer. A day and a half. Not nearly long enough. She came in to Turtle & Canary feeling as though no amount of Squishy's could ever make her happy. "*I* think you're awesome, no matter what Apu thinks," she said, overhearing him talking to the other employee.

"Oh, hey," Sokka said, brightening up. "Thanks. No it's not Apu, it's Valentine... Naminé got kidnapped and nobody bothered to come find me."

He sighed. "Also, Zuko's back, and you're leaving. I hate the new year already. AND there weren't any fireworks."

"It's blasted unfair," Evie agreed morosely. "Much as I want to see my family, and as much as they need help with Jonathan, I could wish we lived just down the road." She sighed, then looked worried. "Oh, I know you want to help, but, you will be careful when I'm gone, won't you?"

Sokka looked hurt. "I'm ALWAYS careful," he said. "You don't have anything to worry about." It wasn't technically a lie, because he honestly believed it. And he was deliberately not thinking about having gotten almost killed on Rikku's world last week. Or the war he'd be going back to after he graduated.

He sighed and gave Evie a hug. "Yes, you help Jonathan. Jonathan needs a LOT of help."

Evie laughed, and whapped at Sokka's arm, but snuggled in with a smile. "That's my brother you're slandering! And, well. I wish I could more strongly protest your viewpoint." She shook her head, hugging him harder. "And Zuko's back? Lord. Perhaps, maybe... I don't know. Perhaps you can avoid him?" She pulled back to look at Sokka, then said, "No, that's just silly."

"I tell you what," Sokka told her, in a serious voice. "Just for you, I promise I won't kill him."

Evie totally believed he could do it, so this promise held more weight than most people would give it. "Awww! Really? Truly? You promise? Because you would get in such *awful* trouble, no matter what else would happen..."

Sokka nodded, and hugged her again. "And you take care of yourself, too, okay? Don't fight any monsters without help?"

"I swear," Evie said sadly, pressing her cheek to his chest. "Lots and lots of help, should anything occur. I can't imagine it would, back in my world, but..." She sighed,sniffling, then pressed her present into his hands. "Here. Open it." (http://www.spiritfeather.com/page19/page19.html)

Sokka eagerly opened it and his eyes lit up. "Dude! Awesome!"

He pulled the leather thong out of his hair, shook it out all floppy-like, and then tied it back with the new hair tie. "...Well, how's it look?"

"Splendid," was Evie's opinion. "Like a real chief. And did you see? It has the symbol for water on it, for your tribe." She took his hand and squeezed it. "You can remember me by it."

"I saw!" Sokka bounced. "And you... uh." He shrugged. "...And you can remember me by the belt, and, uh..." He looked at her with big sheepish puppy-dog eyes. "I, uh, didn't think to get a going-away present for you?" He squeezed her hand back. "But I'll miss you a lot, and... You take care of yourself, and..."

He sniffled. "Squishy?" he asked, offering her the other half of the one he'd been drinking. "It's meat-flavored."

"Thanks," Evie said, taking just a sip, before swallowing hard and saying, "You're so sweet." She bounced up on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on his lips. "Right. I should go pack, maybe, but.... Perhaps not just yet?"

Sokka kissed her back. "Yeah, not just yet. After all, we're having a sale on Squishies and kisses."

Who probably thinks Sokka's nuts.

Because when you're out of Character, you're out of LIFE!
