Book Haven - Friday

Liir had utterly cheated getting here.

Layers sounded like a good plan for snow, but when you only have one set of clothes, they're not so much an option. He did have more than one cloak, of course, but he'd only eyed the black one a few times before settling with just the blue. Then he'd looked down at his feet and the very unwaterproof boots there. Wet feet, he knew from experience, could put him up in bed for a week and he didn't have the time for it.

Broom. Definitely the broom, he'd decided. And as such, someone had probably wondered what the low-flying shivery blue ball on the janitorial equipment might be. But he was here now, just the tiniest bit early since he wanted to make sure he could get there on time with the snow.

He opened the shop, put his things neatly beneath the counter (as he'd never seen a clerk with a quiver on his back), and hoped that Millie showed up before any customers did.

Millie was downstairs waiting for him when he arrived. "Good morning, Liir!" she said brightly.

He gave her a somewhat nervous smile and nodded a greeting to her.

"Good morning, Millie. I'm not too early, am I?"

He didn't want to be inconvenient.

"Oh Goddess, no," Millie said with a smile. "You are just fine!"

He smiled at her thankfully. He was glad she'd hired him. She seemed very nice.

It was a pleasant change.

"Where would you like me to get started? Did you want to show me how to take care of customers first? Or stocking shelves?"

Millie thought for a moment, then gave him a tour around the store, so he'd know where all the different types of books were to be found. Then she brought him over to give him a quick lesson on the cash register and the checking out process.

"Beyond that," she said, "Really all one needs is to be polite and helpful. And if anyone should happen to give you a hard time, just give me a call."

"I should be all right," he said. He'd dealt with about as cantankerous as a human being can get.

"Thank you. And thank you for the book. It's very good."

He was enjoying it, anyway. And it explained a few things about being at a school that he didn't know. It also, in a way, made him feel less alone. Like he had a friend he could always pick up and be with who knew what it was like to be someplace new and completely out of the realm of her experience.

He liked it.

He'd decided that it would be completely unprofessional to bring work (at least, until he absolutely had to) and as such merely sat at the counter watching to see if any customers might need him with what he hoped was an inviting smile. When he had a better idea of the ebb and flow of this part of his duties, he'd probably start working out how to include some neatening up and cleaning into his days.

John had given Andrew quite a nice fleece lined jacket for Christmas. It seemed a shame not to use it. So Andrew had headed out from the dorms with no particular destination in mind, taking his time to frolic in the snow, and ended up in front of the book store. He liked books.

Andrew took care to stomp as much snow off of his shoes and pant legs as possible before walking into the store.

"Possibly," Andrew said, having not really given much thought to what kind of book he was looking for.

He smiled back at the boy and asked, "Don't we have a class together? With Professor Ambrose?"

The mention of Professor Ambrose had him looking awkward for a minute; he never did well with surprise.

But he nodded.

"We do. Inventiontronics on Monday. Have you come up with anything?"

He was still sketching out how his invention might work, but he wasn't sure if he had it right. All this ticktockish stuff was a little out of his league.

Then he shook his head.

"I mean, well, if you need any help with anything, let me know."

Customer service comes before personal interest during work hours.

"I have no clue what I'm going to do," Andrew replied, evidently not very worried about it. "I was thinking about making a jet pack, but I have no clue how it would work."

He cocked his head slightly to the side. "Think you have any books on jet propulsion?"

Green green eyes held nothing but questions.

"If you told me what section it might be in, I'm sure I can help you find something."

"Is there a section on like mechanical things? Or maybe aeronautics?" Andrew glanced about the store. "Oh, and where are the fantasy novels? I've been in the mood for some epic adventuring -- something with dragons. Do you like fantasy?"

Teddy was there for both buying comics and talking to Liir.

Lucky him! This would be the day to accomplish both.

"Very well," he said brightly. Liir. Brightly. No, really.

"Millie showed me how to work the machine and all the different sections. And there's tea and coffee and pastries over there if you'd like. If you're here to buy something."

...friends are friends, but rules are rules. That said, he does say the last a bit teasingly.

Grinning, Teddy backed up a little, letting Liir lead the way. "Did you see any comics here?"

"There's graphic novels," he said, leading him that way, "And she mentioned comics when she showed me them. There's a little stand with smaller magazine-type things. I haven't seen a comic, though, so I can't be sure.
