Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 02/18 ]

Not far into his shift, Chad was discovering that cats were not very good, on the whole, at football. It probably didn't help that the cats in question were kittens, and the football was practically the same size, if not bigger, than they were.

He was also discovering that shelves of music weren't very good at it, either, although that discovery was entirely unintentional. The kittens couldn't exactly catch the football very well at all, but they were really good at distracting you with attempts to tackle.

He was going to leave a note for Melody that she can take any of the damaged out of his paycheck, if she wanted.

He might ask you to go long. What? Yesterday's practise was inspiriting.

In the afternoon, Michael stopped in on his way to visit Cable.

The kittens were unexpected. So was the football game.

"Head's up!" Chad called, just in time for a pass to go well over Michael's head, clearing him of danger quite easily, and then disappearing, with a slightly worrisome crash, somewhere over by the vinyls. Chad winced, slightly, but then the kittens all scurried toward the sound and so he knew they'd come rolling the football back in a bit.

Now lacking in sports paraphernalia, Chad lifted his chin with a grunt in greeting to the customer who had come in. "Hey. S'up?"

"Just came to see what's new", he said, glancing a little warily in the direction the kittens had disappeared. "You?"

"Just working."

Throwing footballs at kittens was totally working.

Sad thing was, Melody probably would approve.

"New music's usually put out on that shelf," he cocked his chin for it. "Best comin' in on Thursday if you want it super fresh new, that's when we get all the new albums come out. Couple weeks ago, gotta new Nada Surf album that's not too bad. Last Thursday, we got the new Goldfrapp, but that's kind of a certain taste..."

"Left a lot of my music back in Roswell", he admitted. "Travelling light, you know? And now I've got jobs..."

He wandered in the direction of the new music shelf.

Chad considered, briefly, what it would have been like to have left Japan without his music.

He quickly decided that he really didn't want to think about it.

"What's your taste?" Chad asked, leaning (carefully) on the counter, and just mostly out of curiosity. He figured, if the customer was just in to resupply his music library, he wouldn't need Chad's help in what he wanted to get, although he'd definitely (all too willingly, perhaps) offer it if he did.

"Rock", was the simple answer. "If you know Dean Winchester, pretty much the same. Metallica's a favourite."

Yes, that was a grunt. It wasn't that Chad didn't like Metallica. He did, especially their earlier stuff, but that sort of answer, that sort of classification as a favourite was just so...unrefined. But, he reasoned, it could have been worse. He could have said any of most of the current bands going around, claiming to be rock and besmirching the name of a great institution.

He would never do that. But then he'd never claim to be refined, either.

"Got any recommendations?" was the semi-challenge in response to the grunt.

"Of new stuff?" Chad grunted again, slightly troubled. If Metallica was all that he had to go with and he was looking for newer stuff, Chad would be a bit hardpressed to suggest something that'd recently come out that might send him in the right way. He lifted his chin in another jerk.

"There's a band in there, Protest the Hero, they got a new one (http://www.amazon.com/Fortress-Protest-Hero/dp/B0011V7P50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203350818&sr=1-1) that ain't too bad. Gotta admit, not a lot of good rock coming out right now..."

Michael pulled a face.

"I know. That's why I go with the classics. Sounds like it might be my kind of stuff, though."

He rummaged through, looking for the band in question.

"It's good," Chad assured him, trying hard not to weep for the youth of the world that Metallica was considered a classic. He would have said something about it, but he was too concerned over not knowing how to respond if he asked and he hadn't heard of Judas Priest, The Who, Buzzcocks...Hell, why not freakin' Aerosmith? Or the Stones? Come on. Metallica?

Kids these days...

Chad's head tilted. "You're in my criminal justice class, aren't you?"

It was, really, a very logical segue in Chad's head.

Michael glanced up, nodding.

"Knew I'd seen you before. Yeah."

...he paid attention to the other people in class. Really.

"Yasutora Sado," he offered, by way of introduction. "Everyone calls me Chad, though..."

"Michael Guerin. Not Mike", he returned. "How'd you get the nickname?"

He could kind of see where 'Chad' could come from 'Sado', but...

"Long story," Chad muttered. "Bad Japanese pun about tea."

"Heh. But you don't mind?"

Chad shrugged. "I used to. But I got used to it. You kinda do when mostly everyone calls you it."

"Guess so. Chad it is, then."

Chad gave another idle shrug, as his apathy about the matter of names was pretty consistent. He made a light glance around the store, stretching his neck a bit, wondering where the kittens disappeared to.

"They yours, or store cats?" Michael asked, remembering the kittens.

"One of 'em's mine," Chad nodded. "The one without the hair. The others are Melody's, but she lets me bring Prince Oscar Pedro to play with them."

"Good for him to have company, I guess", Michael said with a nod.

"It is," Chad nodded. "He's spoiled, but it's good for him to be around the other kittens for attention, although I'm kinda worried about some of the attention he's been given to..to..." His jaw shifted as he still failed to remember that other one's name. "Er, that other one."

Michael chuckled.

"Know if it's male or female?"

"That other one?"

Chad blinked, in a slightly disturbing realization.

"I always figured female, but now that you mention it...I don't honestly know."

"Well, they might be too little to worry about that yet", Michael tried to reassure him.

Chad grunted a bit. "Not...not that I'd worry, or anything," he muttered back. He, of all people, would definitely not be worried about that. Shouldn't be, at least.

"Course not", Michael agreed. "And hey... at least if it's not a girl, you won't have any more kittens on your hands."

...probably.

If Michael was paying particular attention, he might have noticed a slight frown on Chad's otherwise stoic face. He'd like more kittens. You couldn't have too many kittens...

Not particular attention, but he did glance sideways.

"Unless you want more kittens. Me, I'd have trouble looking after them."

"I like kittens," Chad admitted with a mutter. "...They're cute."

"Got nothing against kittens", Michael assured him. "But they eat. Food costs money. And then there's... litter... and things."

Was it obvious he'd never been allowed to have a cat? Or indeed any pet?

Chad shrugged. "Not so bad if you train 'em good. Right now I do just have Prince Oscar Pedro, and I guess he's sometimes a handful, but sometimes I take care of Jeff's dog, too, and she's just a sweetheart."

"Jeff's dog knocked me down and sat on me", Michael remembered, not looking too displeased.

Chad looked mostly unsurprised. "She likes to wrestle. She's good at it, too. She wins against me all the time."

"Does she drool on you?" Michael asked.

This time, Chad's grunt seemed amused.

"Buckets."

"Nice", Michael said, laughing.

Watch out for kittens underfoot and errant footballs.

I kinda miss all the buckets of freezing rain we got yesterday...
