Book Haven, Monday

Seregil came in and set out the pastries and tea for any potential customers, then sat down behind the counter with his napsack.

He pulled out one of the locks Aly had given him to practice on -- it was one that had multiple tumblers and two key holes and Seregil was firmly convinced that whoever designed it was more than a little touched by Illior's madness. Still, he appreciated a challenge and it was definitely serving to pass the time.

The Book Haven was open.

Ronan wandered into the Book Haven, having never been in before -- although he did recall meeting the owner at the previous three-minute dates night -- in search of gifts for Nita, Dairine, and Kit. He smiled when he saw who was at the counter. "Seregil i Korit Solun Meringil Bokthersa," he said, slipping into a slightly more formal mode of speech, "Greetings and salutations. How does the day find you?"

Seregil smiled. "It finds me well. Even better now for the company."

"Company I am more than pleased to provide," Ronan replied, coming up closer to the counter. "Although I'm afraid I must prevail upon you for more than just the company; I find myself in need of some books." He quirked a smile. "I do hope this is the right place to find them."

Seregil made a show of looking around them and the many many heavily laden book shelves. "I believe I can srounge up one or two."

Ronan laughed, looking around. "What do you have on quantum physics?" he asked. "And... a book on linguistics, I think, something fairly advanced, and a fantasy novel. I'm buying gifts," he explained. "For three different friends."

"And here I was thinking you were just extremely wide read," Seregil teased as he set the lock he was working on aside and got up. "Surprisingly enough those books are in three different sections," he said. "Which did you want to start with?"

"Maybe the linguistics?" Ronan said, a bit hesitant. "I have to guess the most there, as I'm not certain what Nita already has."

Seregil smiled. "I might be the most help there. Languages are kind of a hobby for me."

"Oh?" Ronan said. "You might find my world interesting, then," he added, in the Speech. It would sound to Seregil, most likely, as the language of his homeland, or the language with which he was most familiar. If he had the ear for it, he'd be able to tell that that's not what Ronan was actually saying, that it was instead a flowing, liquid language unlike most anything else. "Maybe I'll have to teach you some of the Speech."

Seregil frowned slightly. "That sounds like Aurenfaie, but not quite..." he mused. "Fasicinating."

"It's something of a... universal language where I come from," Ronan explained, as he browsed through the books on linguistics. "It's the language used to create my universe, so everything understands it, and most can speak it."

"So does that mean you can understand other languages when you use it?" Seregil asked curiously.

Ronan nodded. "Those trained in its use, like wizards -- although you don't need to be a wizard to learn it -- can understand any other language. At least, any language of my world; I haven't really properly tested it against languages from other worlds since I got here."

"No time like the present," Seregil said, in Aurenfaie.

"No, certainly not," Ronan replied, absently, in the Speech, even as he pulled a book from the shelf to page quickly through it. "Do you know anything about this book?" he asked.

Seregil took a quick look at the cover. "It's a bit on the basic side," he said, continuing to speak in Aurenfaie. It had been such a long time since he'd been able to converse in it. "There's something a bit more advanced over here."

Ronan nodded. "All right," he said. "You're the one who knows about the linguistics, you said, so I'll trust your judgement. What would you suggest? She's been studying the Speech pretty heavily for a couple of years now, and is branching out into other languages, too, mostly Earth-based ones."

"I found this one has some interesting background and theories on Earth languages," Seregil said, pulling down a volume he'd read in one of his previous shifts. "That would be my reccomendation."

"Perfect." Ronan examined the book quickly, nodding. "This looks great, thank you. Now, Dairine's gift -- the quantum mechanics book?" He frowned. "Do you know anything about that? I'm not sure if you'd have a comparable level of science in your world."

Seregil shook his head and gave a rueful smile. "I didn't even know about television before I came here."

Ronan shrugged. "Well, it's not like it's likely to have been invented on a lot of different worlds," he said. "So that's hardly surprising. Especially if you're from a magic-based society rather than a tech one."

He moved towards the science section, and glanced at the spines. "... I'll take this one," he said, pulling out a book seemingly at random. "I don't remember seeing it on her shelf last time I was there, so it'll do."
