Turtle & Canary, Wed., 3/5

Amber was stacking jars of jelly, making a neat line across the shelf, while Apu was stacking jars of peanut butter, making a neat like across the shelf. Amber was chattering away about her ma and her burned hand which had been replaced with a hook thingy, and how she missed her and Loretta, who was a dear family friend even if she did drink too much. And about Becky who was blown to pieces on the swan float and how her ma blamed Amber... and on and on she chatted, not realizing that Apu had moved on to another aisle and another product.

Today's Squishy Flavors: Red, Lemon Grass, Cotton Candy

Turtle & Canary is open!

Geoffrey stopped by for some cough drops, enough NyQuil to qualify as substance abuse, and some hot coffee.

He rather quickly headed back out.

He was in for a few odds and ends and while he usually held it in his arms, there was a small, curious, fluff little bundle (http://userpic.livejournal.com/72016096/13270951) in a pocket on the strap of his bag for the moment, so he'd grabbed a basket. When he saw Amber at the counter, he smiled.

"Hello," he said, friendly enough. Despite rains of giraffes, Liir was in a relatively good mood. Professor Ambrose was at fault for it and probably would be for some time. "I didn't know you worked here. Er, you do remember me? From the dance?"

He gave a faint shrug and scritched poor Andrew's little head. Andrew being the bunny.

"My boyfriend is a rabbit. Otherwise, exceptionally well. And it is raining giraffes outside, isn't it?"

...she was the first person other than Andrew he'd seen today and he wanted to check. His perception of things wasn't exactly the most stable thing in the world and he knew it.

"You?" he added a moment later.

Liir smiled.

"Yes, he's adorable," he agreed, getting his fingers chinrubbed for the compliment, along with a coo. "And I don't know either. I just found him like this about a week ago."

Which meant he should be changing back soon. He hoped.

He looked out the window.

"Snowing, yes, I suppose. It's just that they melt so quickly... I think I'd say 'snowing giraffes' if there were piles of them out there. Or if you could make, um, giraffemen or something."

The mental picture was not a particularly pleasant thing. He shook it off a moment later.

"I'm glad to hear you're well, though. I'm not all that social," he admitted with a faint, sheepish look, "so it's no wonder I haven't seen you since then. Did you go to Mexico?"

He shook his head.

"I went to the O.Z., where Professor Ambrose is from. It's technically my world, the one I come from, but far far in the future of what I know. I needed to get some help for a problem I was having and the Queen there gave me the answers I needed."

Perhaps not the ones he'd wanted, but the ones he'd needed.

"It sounded very nice though. And the beach here is the only one I've seen. We don't have oceans in Oz."

He breathed out.

"As for a pet, I had already asked my roommate if she'd mind me getting something small," he said with a wry grin. "She'd said she wouldn't mind. Then this happened."

He stroked Andrew's little floppy ears.

"I love him very much. I only hope I'm keeping him happy during all this."

The little rabbit bounced and cooed, almost as if to point out that Liir was doing a very good job and he shouldn't worry about that.

"That's because he's sweet. If you haven't met," he said, looking up, "I should introduce you when he's back to normal."

He perked, though, at the thought of pictures.

"I'd like to see those, if you don't mind. Of Mexico."

He scratched behind one ear.

"As for the O.Z., it's no place like home. It's much... grander. Oz has changed a lot over the years. People I knew are considered legends now. It's almost creepy."

He didn't say anything about how he'd prefer not to go home, or how he only intended to go back to his Oz to perhaps find Nor and help the Elephant. It didn't seem proper.

"I'm in 316 or 201. 201 for the moment, since I'm caring for Andrew."

He couldn't quite explain his connection with memory, how he saw the world. Instead, he picked up on the very basic part of it that upset him and made his stomach twist and went from there.

"It's a very strange thing," he said after a moment, "to see someone you traveled with, laughed at, nudged, talked to, cooked dinner for... to see a statue of them, every detail just so, held up high. Revered."

His mind turned from Nick Chopper.

"Then there's when they get it wrong," he continued, thinking of the Witch and the Mice and the Word on the Street in his own time. Elphaba Lives! Ha.

"You wonder what they saw that you didn't, or what they were to these people who didn't even know them, who never even saw their face. They become symbols and the real person behind it all is forgotten, washed away. It's amazing how quickly it can happen, how quickly memory erases the past and makes of it what someone else needs instead of what was."

It makes you wonder about your own memory in the midst of that massive thoughtstorm of belief. If what happened was important in the face of what people think happened.

Reality, after all, was only as true as it was until it wasn't. For all intents and purposes, it was what went on between your ears.

Sokka stopped in for a Squishy and Easter candy. "Hi! You work here, too?"

Sokka nodded. "Yep! On Thursdays." He scratched his head. "Lemon Grass? What kind of flavor is THAT???"

Sokka shrugged. "All right." So he did.

He kind of stared at the cup, not sure what to make of it. "Hmmm..." he said. "Zesty."

"Pretty good," he agreed. "I'm more a fan of the meat-tasting ones, myself."

Sokka raised an eyebrow. "I tried the lemon grass," he pointed out.
