Turtle & Canary, Wednesday, 4/16

Amber was staring at Apu. Apu was humming and talking to himself it seemed while he was mozying on down the cereal aisle. Amber wasn't certain, but she was sure she heard the words 'Yabba-dabba-delicious' and 'Follow your nose, it always knows'. Amber was kind of hungry now. At least Apu was entertaining.

Today's Squishy Flavors: Cocoa Pebbles, Fruit Loops, Red.

Turtle & Canary is open!

Of course, Charlotte had been in and out of the quaint little store for various items and sundries throughout the week as she got herself settled into her new apartment, but, this time around, she'd come into the store with a particular purposes and one that might need a bit of assistance. She gave the girl behind the counter, who she thought she might have actually recognized from attending the gallery opening, a bright smile before asking, "Excuse me, hello. I was wondering if you could help me? Just a little question."

Well, the girl was certainly enthusiastic, which was lovely. Charlotte always liked to see that sort of friendliness and energy. "Oh, good," she said. "Well, I'm sorry in advance for being an obnoxious customer and all that, but I was wondering if you guys do anything like gift baskets, or that sort of thing? I'm in the need to sort of express a bit of an apology to someone, and I typically find gift baskets to be pretty good at that sort of thing."

"Oh, no," Charlotte said, unable to stop from smiling at the enthusiasm despite the shake of her head. "Nothing too bad. In fact, the recipient will probably think that I'm being completely unnecessary about it, but it's just on my conscience, you know, and it's just nibbling away and I had to do something or else I won't feel better about it...."

"Oooh, you can delive--No." Charlotte stopped herself with a shake of her head. "I should probably do it myself; it's just more personable that way, you know? Price isn't so much as an issue...Not too much, of course, because I wouldn't want to seem like I was trying to hard, and not too little because I don't want to see cheap...you probably have default, set ones, but do you mix and match, as well? Build your own? I wouldn't want to seem lazy by just going with a default, after all...."

Charlotte considered for a moment, and then nodded. "That'd be good, yes. That is a bit of a problem; I don't knowL him very well quite yet, so it's a little hard to tell what might be appropriate."

"Well, I was thinking for gift baskets of stuff rather than flowers," Charlotte said thoughtfully, and, struck with sudden inspiration, said, "Like food, maybe! Muffins. Muffins are good, although I suppose I could just make them..."

"Hmmmmm," Charlotte's lips pressed together, shifted back and forth a little bit as she considered. "Cookies, then? You'd suggest cookies? Cookies might be easy enough to take. Baking is a nice gesture, after all, and then, I mean, I could just pick up a basket, put the cookies in it, and there you go, that seems....doable..."

Such a difficult, difficult decision, really.

"Well," Charlotte seemed rather reluctant to venture into this sort of territory, but the girl did have a good point about how that might help them decide on what sort of offering she could put together. Although, really, she could just go with the cookie thing and call that good and not embarrass herself any further.

Ohhhh, if only all conundrums were easily spelled out for you in women's magazines, but, unfortunately, they rarely seemed to cover events that constituted apologies to men you yell at because they look like your exhusband.

"...I think I'll just go with the cookies," Charlotte concluded with a nod. "So I'll get all the supplies, and a nice tin to put them in, and, oh! Some ribbon, to decorate. Blue. Blue's a good neutral ribbon color."

Those little wieners were good, especially if you got the really nice ones, and perhaps if they were kosher, just in face. Charlotte bit her lip again in consideration of the girl's suggestions, but, when she came around to it, she just nodded with conviction. Sometimes, one just had to trust their intuition. "No, those are all very good suggestions, but I think I'm going to stick with the cookies, thank you."

It was hard to go wrong with cookies. Oh, unless there was an allergy! Oh, dear, that did complicate the matter a little but...

No. Cookies. Intuition. Charlotte was certain.

"I'll just go and gett hose now, then, and be right back. And thank you for all your help, um...I'm sorry, dear, I didn't catch your name?"

"Well, it's very nice to meet you, Amber, thank you." Charlotte smiled and nodded her head, and she certainly would think about that doily as she went about picking up her purchases.
