Pixie Dust, Monday [4/21]

It was the Monday before prom, and so Romeo was prepared for a busy day as he opened the shop. He quickly decorated with streamers, a few balloons around the mirrors, and glitter on the floor, then surveyed the options. There were several racks of prom dresses, an array of tuxedos, and of course shoes.

Today's music: The soundtracks to Yet Another Film About Teenagers and Lovely in Lavender.

Sometime that afternoon, there was a girlfriend peeking her head into the shop as she waved a bag full of goodies from JGoB. "Ohaiyo! Lunch is served!"

Romeo was sorting a rack of dresses by color, but his face brightened when Yurika entered. "Ohaiyo to you, too," he returned, holding one dress up. "Is it just me, or would this make anyone look like a showgirl?"

Not that he thought that was entirely a bad thing, but still.

"The amount of sequined monstrosities this year is astounding," she said, slipping up beside him to examine the dress. "It's like the Miss Universe pageant had a lovechild with a cheap Vegas chorus girl. The cut isn't bad, the pattern is just terrible."

"Three words that ought not be put together: Formal. polka. dots," Romeo shuddered, replacing the dress. "Some of the sequins from the cheaper dresses are already shedding, too, just in case they weren't trashy enough intact." He gestured illustratively to a particularly sparkly spot on the floor.

"I am very, very glad no one thinks tuxedos need to be shinier."

"Don't worry, my dress has no formal polka dots," Yurika teased. "And tuxedos never need to be shinier. They're supposed to highlight the person wearing them, not overwhelm you."

"Which is clearly a lesson that the dressmakers need to learn."

"Probably yours has no faux fur, either," Romeo returned, mock-disappointed. "I agree, the whole point of formal attire is to make the person look good, not to blind onlookers."

"Speaking of your dress," he added, "Can I know the color, at least, or do you want to surprise me?"

"Blue!" Yurika plopped down on one of the seats at the register and set her precious food-cargo on the counter. "Sort of a royal peacock blue (http://pics.livejournal.com/dojima_hime/pic/00079b71) color. No sequins or any nonsense like that."

"A good color for you," Romeo noted, moving away from the rack of clothes and starting to poke at the bags. "I think I forgot to say thank you, but thank you. What do we have?"

Liir came in a little after noon, a bag that smelled curiously of cheeseburger in his hands. It wasn't from any sort of Burger Joint or anything; he'd made them himself.

"Hai. Im in ur store, bringin u lunch."

He hadn't seen Romeo for a while, after all.

Romeo blinked just a little at what sounded to him like Liir's new accent, but he wasn't one to turn down food. "Thanks, Liir," he said, reaching for the bag. "...Cheeseburgers?" That was nice, and, being a teenage boy and thus a bit of a bottomless put, he could fit one on top of Yurika's cookies.

He unwrapped a sandwich. "How have you been?"

"U can has."

He pointed to the cheeseburgers, of which there were many in the bag.

"Jus fine. I wuz a kitteh 4 da weekend. It wuz weird."

Either Romeo's grammar was broken -- which he'd been accused of before here -- or Liir's was; his only question was which.

"I should think," he said, taking a bite of the (excellent) cheeseburger. "A cat? My fake big brother was a rabbit once."

"... and I am beginning to think it is a sign how long I have been on this sland that I can say something like that without fearing myself mad."

"Thz place iz weird sometimes. Andrew wuz bunneh 2. I had 2 taek care ov him. Dat wuz a wihl ago."

He grinned and grabbed one himself.

"Iz gud cheezeburger?"

"Iz - 'Tis," Romeo corrected himself, "very good."

he tilted his head to one side. "So does it feel like being yourself but shaped like a cat, or did you also think like a kitten?"

He took a bite and then scratched at his ear thoughtfully.

"A lil ov both. I felt liek myself, cud finkz liek myself, but it wuz almost liek I wuz thinkin thru filtr ov katness. Teh material wuz teh same but teh form shapd it."

Beat.

"Iz gud cheezeburger."

He took another bite and enjoyed it.

"Hey, Montague" Mel said walking into the store. "Got any prom dresses that won't make look like a harlot?"

Mel thought Romeo might like to hear the appropriate use of the word "harlot".

"Fraaaaaay," answered Romeo, who appreciated the word choice enough that he didn't mind being called by his last name. "Many. This whole rack -" he gestured "- is almost harlot free."

"Though," he added, thoughtfully, "one doesn't want to look like a nun, either."

"I just don't want some creep to offer me money for something creepy," Mel said with a smirk. "And also something that looks good in combat boots."

"Nothing that would attract creeps you would just need to beat up," Romeo said, flipping through some dresses, "and something that would suit combat boots." He eyed Mel. "Something short, perhaps?"

As he emerged from the rack, he held several moddable dresses in each hand. "Would any of these do?"

Mel tilted her head. "Man, for a straight guy you have some good taste in women's clothes," she said taking the dresses in hand. "Unless you happen to be hiding something from us all."

Romeo laughed. "My best friend at home liked to dress in drag at times. I listened to him."

"Your friend has good taste," Mel said pulling one of the dresses (http://www.sohos.co.uk/acatalog/promdress1.jpg) over her current outfit. "What do you think? Too girly?"
